Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

In response to my email to Tim Cook someone from Apple's corporate executive relations department called me and left a voicemail asking me to return the call. I left a voicemail for them. It will be interesting to see what this is about. I'll keep you all posted.

ooo this is getting juicy! good stuff; keep us posted! maybe record the conversation too...

i'd wouldnt mind it if apple wanted to install and logging app on my phone; to see what exactly goes wrong at the moment. i dont hate apple, they make great stuff, and they seem ok enough to replace TONS of phones for a million reasons. so id like to help if possible

my update is i've restored as new phone yesterday and am so busy haven't had time to test it out yet; made 3-4 calls so far & they went through, but from the sounds of it (other's experiences) it'll be back

My hesitation in replacing the phone is that others have done it and their "new" phone eventually fails in exactly the same way.  There are several instances in this thread and other threads.

I don't want to waste the time swapping my phone for another one unless I'm certain that I'm getting a brand new phone that has a real hardware fix.  I believe that the phones that haven't exhibited the problem are barely working.  My wife has a new 4S as well and so far she hasn't had the problem.  I'll definitely post if I see her phone fail.

Good luck to everybody.  I'm going to wait for iOS 5.1 before I swap my phone.  The workaround is ridiculous but I'll live with it for a few more weeks.

I went to a apple shop and they only took a quick look and then replaced my 4s black 16gb.

Haven't the problem any more since.

I asked them whether this problem was occuring often, they said it was only once in a while.

I ordered the phone early November but after discovering this thread decided to cancel the order and to wait a bit.  I emailed Tim Cook on the 22nd stating my decision to delay the purchase and as a shareholder I need the executive team to protect the Apple brand.  I received a voice mail the next day.  I called back on the 25th.  The Executive Relations person told me that he had forwarded this discussion thread to Apple engineers just in case they were not aware.  He also told me at that point in time Apple had not identified this as an issue and could not comment on the validity of information that showed up on the Internet.

Db247365, you may be in a better position to push for more information or action since you actually experienced the issue first hand.  Good luck and please update us on your discussion with Apple.

Same here folks. I am from MAcedonia i got a new iphone 4s 16 g white with ser.No starting with DNRG on 7 dec. ANd i face it the same problems as you previosly described, no audio when i am calling , i have to press speaker button twice to fix it, echo  somethimes too appears, and sometimes i can hear other side speaking but they arent lisening to me. This is such a shame for Apple.

Other thing that boders me much is that here in balkans there is no Apple store i have to deal with T Mobile. I am headind to my carrier on Monday so we will see if they will accept my phone and give me new one. I Will try all my best.

And in the end APPLE hear what you loyal consumers has to say , dont playing with us, i am fed up , very mad and frustrated.

Replaced my 4S almost two weeks ago and have had no problems with the replacement. Suggest everyone just starts taking their phones back for this problem and, eventually, Apple will have to admit there is a problem with at keat a batch of the phones.

My replacement was brand new in the white box. I bought my phone at Radio Shack and they gave me absolutely no trouble about replacing the defective one.

Ok.  It has been 4 days since I received my replacement.  The problem has not resurfaced.  Originally I thought it was software but now I know I was wrong and that it is indeed hardware.

Vodnickal, I know this really doesn’t apply to you, but here’s the process that I went through to replace my phone.  Went to the Apple Store Thursday and described the problem – no audio when making a call.  The Genius removed some stuff, reset some stuff and said to see if that fixed the problem and to try the phone for a couple of days.  (I guess that there is a process for them to go through before replacing a phone which was ok with me.)  Whatever he did, did not fix the issue (of course).  I went back to the Apple Store Friday, talked to another Genius described my visit the day before and she said “Ok, let’s replace your phone”.  So far it seems ok, but I have not made a lot of calls yet.

I don’t know if my phone is new or refurbished.  She took it out of a black foam box not a retail box.  My new serial number starts with C36G.

It's been days since my replacement phone (2nd replacement, 1st one had blue splotch on screen). No audio problem. I can't tell you how nice it is not blowing in the phone every call to see if it's working. But I was once like you, stressing this whole issue. It's worth it. Get the replacement.

As for the phone call response to my email to Tim Cook, it was a rep from their corporate executive relations department. Basically the call was nothing special. She wanted to see if my replacement was working good, and to let me know to contact her directly if I have another problem. She did say that they do have engineers who monitor these and other forums for reports of problems, but that they don't respond directly. She said that they need to talk to each person to run them through some steps and see what the specific problem was, that this couldn't be derived from forum reports alone (this part of the convo seemed like the general run around regarding admitting to problems in a public way). But she did say that they monitor this and other forums, so I'm sure they're aware of the problem. I would bet they're just hedging their bets and banking on the fact that some people will live with the problem rather than return/exchange the phone.

edit: my replacement phones were black boxed. To be honest I didn't really care as long as one eventually worked. I wasn't going to argue about this, as long as the phone works, is in perfect condition, and is under warranty, I'll be happy.

I have been having exactly the same problems with my new I-Phone 4s (just 1 week old) since day one.   I had thought it might be an issue with Verizon, however after a lot of back and forth with them, the store manager where I purchased the phone came across this thread and pointed me in this direction.

Yesterday I spoke to apple support who still is not recognizing this as an official problem.  They asked me to do a complete system restore to factory defaults, which I did last evening.   I was actually hopefull that would fix the problem but the first call I made this morning experienced the same problem -- I called and the call timer started but there was no sound.

I used the suggestion of some in here that toggeling the speaker on and off would fix it.   This did in fact work and the call was in fact active and ringing.

It would appear a software restore is not fixing this problem.   Apple if you are reading this thread look at the facts so far:

    1.  It is not related to a single carrier

    2.  Software restores are not fixing the problem

    3.  It is not happening on every iphone 4s

    4.  replacement iphones seem to be fixing the problem

I am no expert but it sure looks like there is a manufacturing problem with some of the phones.   Please get this documented and communicate it out to your stores and other resellers so that we, your customers do not have to continue spending needless time doing things that are not working.
