Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Thanks for the post.  I'm waiting for Apple support to call me back so I can verify they will exchange the phone.  Unfortunately I went to the Apple Store in Atlantic City on Friday to replace the phone (at the suggestion of Verizon) and the store manager indicated to me this behavior was "normal" and wanted to go through a bunch of diagnostics even after I made the offending behavior happen in his presence.   I left because I did not have time then to go through a bunch of hoops again.   This time I will get Apple support to agree to replace the phone and get a message to this manager that there is in fact a problem and to replace it rather than waste more time.

Why don't you post the phone number you used or the email to reach Tim Cook?  Maybe if they were swamped with calls from users, they might be forced to address these issues publicly.  I have sent three different inquiries to Apple with no response.  I have already replaced my phone once, replaced the sim card, reset, and did a complete system restore to factory defaults.  The phone initially worked, but now about 1 out of 6 calls does the no audio thing, and the call quality is not good on about half the calls, and at times, the audio fades when I am talking to someone (fades on their end).  The Apple store is an hours drive for me, plus it is swamped now because of Christmas shoppers.  They are not making appointments, just come in a wait to see someone, so I really don't want to make another trip.

I would definitely recommend creating a case with an Apple ID over the phone with Apple, and going through all the restoration steps with them. Then, when inevitably the problem is not resolved (it appears restoration does not fix this, if you wade through the evdence), tell them you want to exchange the phone at an Apple store. Then you'll have your case ID from apple. When you make a genius appointment (do this online, ahead of the date), reference your Apple ID case number, and explain the restoration/reset steps you took, and that the Apple rep on the phone told you to exchange the phone. This will keep things going smooth at your appointment, and they may possibly already be ready for you with a replacement set aside, etc.

If you reset your phone and notice the problem goes away in the first 5 minutes, please wait a day or two before posting! If you wade through these topics, people inevitably come back 3 days later saying "it's back"!

Thank YOU!  I also assume apple is putting the returned phones back into service as refurbished! This is horrible and i think 20/20 should do a story on it! Last night I urgently needed to get my son on the phone before he got on a bus.. it took me 3 tries to get the call through!!! 3! What if I was being raped, murdered, running for my life and i was trying to get a call through and it took me 3 times? I'd be dead by then!

Apple needs to acknowledge this problem!

I just called for a replacement but there will be a $700 hold on my credit card until I return the old phone! This is crazy...

The big corporation makes out with billions and the little guy gets screwed as usual.

I also love how the AT&T (my carrier) and the Apple customer service act as if it is the first they've heard of the problem. WOW! Make sure you make them know you're not an idiot and lead them to this thread and many many others!!

Or even better, print out a copy of this thread and take it to the Apple Store.   Have them read it if they say its the first time they have heard of this issue....

    I called AT&T again yesterday (3rd time)

, and got the response "not aware of any problems with 4S". Told me to call Apple.  Come on AT&T and Apple. How stupid do you think we are?

went in to apple store & they exchanged my iphone in a snap, though i had another problem with my phone (hitting sleep wake button would occasionally not work) so they used that as the reason to exchange.

the new phone was not pre-installed with 5.01 so it's probably from the 1st batch of hardware makes so we'll see if that fixes it (and the battery was dead when i got it, meaning its made a while ago. cause it seems that many of the new phones given out (on this forum) had 5.01 on them so maybe they're a later hardware release. anyway, we'll see, apple was v good about it and if it comes up again i can go back with confidence that they'll help one way or another.

they said though that it could be a carrier problem, as the phones are 'dual network ready' and when the calls are made the phone or carrier are having trouble identifying which one it is. and that if it happens again i shld call the carrier and ask them to re-...**** i forgot... re-actualize or re-something the card..i forgot..re-... ****.. i tried to remember it sorry. i might call them back and speak to the genius rep i dealt with to ask him. it was 2 things that had to be done, re-something & something else..

anyway. will keep all here updated on whether new phone exhibits new problems (as the rep said the issue may re-surface in a few weeks due to it being a carrier issue; at which point i should try calling carrier to carry out the steps he mentioned.

"I get the call screen and can see the timer but no sound."

My problem exactly... 64G iPhone 4S from AT&T

This happens A LOT.  My wife is seriously annoyed that I have to call her 3 or 4 times to get a good connection.

Problem is solved for me at this point.  Going to just say it one more time for those of you out there.  Hardware replacement is the answer.  Good luck!

I had this problem (50% calls was no audio) and fixed it by pluging-unpluging headphones.  I did it about 10-20 times, rotated jack. It's worked 100% for me. 2 weeks, a lot of calls and no one "problem".

I'm having this issue as well.

I've found though if I hit the speaker phone button then I get audio through the speaker, then if I turn off speaker phone the audio returns to the ear piece and it works correctly. At the moment I would say I have the no audio problem well over 50% of the time, in fact probably around 60-70% of the time. Incoming calls for me seem to be fine.

I use the phone via a Bluetooth car system and the problem also happens when I'm connected to that as well

Seems to me this is likely to be software, not hardware given it doesn't happen on incoming and also happens with the Bluetooth, but hopefully Apple will give us an official answer at some point.
