Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Same problem here with a white 4S 16GB. I am not sure how this will be solved from Apple but it is really frustrating. I am under the impression that white models are more prone to this particular problem.

I went to the genius bar last saturday and they exchanged the phone. The new one I got works perfect.

    So I assume it`s a hardware issue.

I had not experienced the headset echo on the old (or new) phone, but didn't run any controlled experiment, and only have a couple calls on the new so far.

I should also mention, there was no pushback on getting a replacement, as the tech reproduced the problem on the first call. (And I referenced this thread when making my Genius Bar appointment.)

I left a happy customer, as the customer service experience was excellent.

OK.  I finally had enough.  My iPhone 4S locked up in Speaker Mode twice in a week.  The only fix was to do a power cycle.  I was going to try and live with the No Audio problem until iOS 5.1 but having to shut the phone off and on was just too much.

Anyway, my local Apple Store was very quick to replace my defective 4S.  They told me that they have had to exchange several iPhone's and there were no questions asked.  The Apple Store confirmed that there will most likely be a fix in iOS 5.1 but they couldn't say when it will be released.

I will repost if my replacement iPhone fails.  Good luck to everybody!

I have bought a new 4s 32gb black phone, very first day I noticed no audio when making calls, happens like once every 15th call, turning the speaker on seems to bring it back but still happens frequently this phone is 1 week old. If I send this back do you know if apple will send new one or refurbished phone? I dread refurbished Ive got one that was worse than the one I sent in with my old LG.

Just for the record... I have the same problem... 4S 32GB... just returned to the phone company  for some testings, and if (big "if"..) it apply for warranty, they will give me a new one ...  I hope it's a software, not a hardware problem, but it's reallly annoying!!

I have the same or similar problem on my black iPhone 4S 32 GB.

When I place a call, the speaker is on by default and the person in the other end can't hear me.

Resetting all settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings) brought it back to normal for a week or so, but the issues returned. Again, resetting it brought it back to normal.

I think this is a software issue that will be patched sooner or later. However, I find it incredible irresponsible by Apple not responding to their customers.

    Same problem here in Belgium.

We don't have an Apple Store here, so will take the phone to my local dealer tomorrow. Hopefully it won't take ages to replace it...

White iPhone 32GB - same problem in Norway.

I am unable to both send and recieve text messages and phone calls.

Suddenly started today after just 5 days of use.

I had a voicemail issue earlier today. Someone left me a voicemail, and the battery died out before I managed to listen to it. Charged the battery, and that's when my problems started. At first I had an issue with visual voicemail and a red circle that wouldn't disappear from the phone icon and then I couldn't make calls or send texts. When calling someone it looks as if the phone calls them, but I can't hear anything. People calling me doesn't show up on my phone or in the last used log, and texts people send me never make their way to my phone.

Everytime I put it to sleep it calls someone. I called my husband and he said he was getting a call from me while he was on the phone with me(or rather on the phone with my phone, I didn't make the call..). And it is unable to quit calls, it's as if the phone is hanging. When trying to call someone again, it calls several people at once, and no calls can be cancelled or ended. Push to go to call/coversation is stuck on my screen as well. Quitting phone goes ok, but when phone locks up it tries to call someone again and then I have to unlock and quit again and again and again. Better just turning it all off, I have no idea how my phone bills will look like, but I am pretty sure I know who's gonna pay for them. (Insert Apple icon here)

Tried to change sim-cards, turning the iPhone on and off both with and without sim-cards. Nothing. Home-button and on/off-button held in at once and turned on again helped with the sound on the phone. It makes static noises as well, and I've taped the sound.

This is unbelievable. To spend this much on a phone that simply won't live up to its part as a phone is extremely annoying, and it angers me after thinking my old phone was wack, but at least that one got the job of being a phone done right.

    My first iPhone ever.

It was going so smoothly, but oh how fast my opinion switched when this happened.

You are still within the return period.

Get it changed or ask for a full refund.
