Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    hello all,

I bought a month ago my 16 gb iphone 4s black and the only two problems are the echo and the problem with that is when the calls start at the second call but I do not feel anything.
I was wondering if anyone knows what could be and maybe how to solve problems.

    Thanks ..

I have had my black 4s 32GB for a few days now in UK. Same problem. Cant hear anything the other end. It does appear to be landlines mainly at the moment.

I junked my Nokia because of the problems i had with it as did many others. I moved to Apple because of its reputation. I hope its not a repeat. Nokia lost loads of customers as they vowed never to buy another one. Very few people i know have one now.

I dont want to be trawling forums again to find solutions. I just want a phone that works!
Honesty is the best policy as it will keep customers loyal. If Nokia had admitted the faults with its phone and rectified them, then their customer base would not have suffered.

    Learn the lesson please Apple!

Same problem.  Bought a 4s from Verizon. 20% outgoing calls, connects (timer starts), no audio.  Spoke with Verizon, denies they know of any issues.  Not telling the truth.  Got on the phone with Apple yesterday.  Specialist denied there was an issue.  Wouldn't admit they have received reports on this problem.  Walked through the system reset, already tried this.  The tech's solution.......booked an appointment for me to drive 140 miles round trip to get a new iPhone 4s at the Apple store.  All she had to do was admit there was a bug and they were working on a fix.  Instead, she is going to make me go through all of this.  I am going to file an official complaint with the Attorney General Consumer Affairs Division.  Just stupid and embarrasing on Apple's part.  ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES AND BE UPFRONT WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!

I think this means only ohe: the PERSON matters. No Person - no company. It's my  very first Apple purchase and I could be a very loyal customers. But such behavior is most likely as Chinese Schifone manufacturer.

This issue is starting to make headlines on blogger sites...

We are on our second Iphone 4s 32g Black (Telus British Columbia) - same issue out of the box.  unfortunately, we assumed the second one worked out-of-the-box... it did not. I will be going back tomorrow to get a replacement.. and this time testing it before I leave...;-)

    ISSUE:

    • Exactly the same symptoms as reported by everyone (no audio out, toggle speaker to fix).
    • We tried adding the wired headset into the mix... made a mess, the speakerphone activates and gets stuck no matter how many times you toggle.

    ATTEMPED REMEDIES:

    1. Insert the headset plug (in and out) repeatedly
      1. didnt work
    2. Blow into headset jack (put your mouth right over it and blow as hard as you can)
      1. worked for 2 calls, then went back to the usual.
    3. SIRI on, make call, SIRI off make call with headset,
      1. repeat with bluetooth
      2. repeat with headphones
      3. didnt work for any

RETURN TO APPLE (or Dealer) ASAP before your hardware swap window closes... it looks like APPLE is not willing to let this issue go public... how is that working for them? ;-)

    Hello,

I'm new around here and I had the same issue with my iPhone 4S 16Gb. No sound on my outgoing cals. I'm from Europe and my carrier is Orange. First thought was to change the device to resolve the problem. But waiting for a new phone is killing me so i decided to do a restore from iTunes after I have read some of your posts. It has been 3 days since i did a restore and the issue seems to be solved. All my outgoing cals have sound.

This is definitely a software problem! Maybe you should try to do more than just one restore. Just keep restore your iOS fot 2 or 3 times. Maybe it will work for you. If not, let's just hope Apple will give us an update for Christmas.

I'll be monitoring my iPhone in the next few days and tell you if mine is working or not.

I also did a restore last night, and so far my phone is working. Calls and text messaging: I can both recieve and make calls and send texts. Phone conversations are echoing my voice though.

All other issues seems to have gone away. I'm glad that the restore helped, but of course scared this will happen again, this is a very unfortunate weakness.

Happy about the iTunes update and restore, no information lost.

It might be because able released a new build of 5.01 yesterday (http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/15/apple-posts-minor-ios-updates-for-apple-tv-and-ip hone-4s/) which is not a necessary update, but if you restored or installed 5.01 from yesterday on you'd receive the new build. They may have already adressed the issue there.

I too have the echo problem when using my headset/headphones.

I received a 64gb iPhone 4s, on  Dec 14/2011 from Telus - Canada.  No audio out unless the speaker phone is toggled. I wasted time calling  Apple - support -they did not acknowledge problem but suggested a restore - which I did.  The restore did nothing and  the problem continues .

I will have to pay to have the phone shipped back for an exchange and hope the next one might work.

I own 3 other Apple products ( they do work ) and I am very disappointed that Apple continues to ship out iPhone 4s that they know are flawed.

It is very disappointing that Apple is maintaining silence and continuing to ship these iPhones no doubt knowingly, clearly due to the lack of mainstream media coverage. I have written the following article for CNN iReport hoping that they pick it up: iPhone 4S FAIL No Audio on Outgoing Calls http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-718336

Did a restore this afternoon. No change I'm afraid! Only works if I toggle the speaker button.

Hiho hiho it's off to the Apple store we go!

    Same problem for me.

Yesterday i bought my iPhone 4S and having te issue of outgoing calls.

Like DieselD allready mentioned, I turn on te speaker, quickly turn back off and everything goes well.

But in 1 of the 3 times I make an outgoing call I don't hear a thing. After 1 or 2 times of retrying the call it works.

Is this an issue due to the software or is this (surtainly hope not) a hardware problem?

Does anyone knows the answer on this question?

    I hope Appel does soon...

My wife's iPhone 4s was having the same problems.  About everyother called she tried to make there wasn't any audio.  We went the apple store today, genius bar guy couldn't replicate the problem.  He did a complete restore to orginal settings, and then tried to replicate it again.  Luckily it happened for him.  He immediately replaced the iPhone.  So far we've had good luck.  Made a couple of calls and have had audio on every call.
