Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

THanks to this thread I sent my hardware iPhone 4s

Back. I got the replacement in 24 hours. They put a hold of 760.00 on my credit card.

I understand some of you will not be able to do it that way. The replacement is perfect

IT took 50 mins on phone and 2 advisors who claimed they know nothing about this.

MIne was white 32gig.  I don't think after reading thus thread it makes any difference which phone

I do think it's a hardware issue. I've had all iPhones from beginning.

I have restored jail break take apart every iPhone

    THis is 100%

DEfective hardware problem. It freaked me out.

THe replacement is even faster browser and better battery life

WHich still ***** compared to my iPhone   But better then the first one from china

THat they replaced in 24 hours with the 760.00

HOld on my credit card. I sent my old one back in 24 hours and my credit card

WIll be released of the hold.  This is total crap!

LIke some of the others have said here don't take no for an answer

GEt a new one.  I'll be suprised if there is a software fix

FOr this. This is crazy and a very big story. Leo the tech guy someone should tell him

SPread the word those of you that can. I'm so ****** off I can't control myself.

I can barely write this. However I feel I owe the others here to tell my story

SOmeone else pick up the pace and pressure on apple for a press release

I hope this helps.  Again I did everything restores

OVer and over 4 times and all it took was a 50 min phone call keeping my cool and having 769.00 $$

ON a credit card for a hold until they got back of junk.

    NOw I'm happy I didn't wait a day longer

    IM out laters

So far I've gone through 3 different iPhone 4Ss, they all exhibited the same problem at some point. I am a heavy headphone user so perhaps there is something to the suggestion that switching to the headphones triggers the problem though I can't tell for sure whether it's hardware or software. Seems to me that this problem is potentially affecting a large % if not all of the iPhones out there. 3/3 is too much of a bad luck.

I regret getting into the iPhone 4S, should have stayed with an iPhone 4 that at least functioned as a phone. The iPhone 4S is turning out to be a horrible release, far worst than the antennagate.

Same problem here.  Got new iPhone 4S yesterday and when the issue does occur - which seems to be more often than not for me the phone looks as if it is dialing but I do not hear the rings, the timer starts counting up when the other party answers but I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me.   Once in awhile I can hear them but they cannot hear me.  Very frustrating.  Positng this to further reinforce to Apple this is an issue that needs to be fixed.

    hmmm.... here's a different solvation.

while you're on the call and the timer is going on, let your speaker be on at full sound. and try connecting headphones in it. check. if the audio is coming, take it out(even if the audio was not coming ).check...

Ok so after testing it quite extensively it appears that after dialing the number, if you don't hear the rings, switch the phone over to speaker and then back off again resolves the problem at least for what is happening to me.  Works every time I have tried so far.

I can reproduce this problem every time. Open dial pad and quickly dial a number and everthing is fine. However take 10 sec or so and no sound. As mention switch to speaker and back fixes until next time.

I just got back from the Apple Store (which is about 2 hours away) and they exchanged my phone because I was able to reproduce the problem.  Now I have no issues, but then again, I have only had it for about hours and have made numerous calls.  This is my first iPhone, but I am leaning towards this being a hardware issue.  My suggestion is to get another phone.

    Just my 2 cents.

I got mine replaced @ the Apple Store yesterday. We verified that it wasn't my Bluetooth headset. So far so good.

I've read comments in this and other threads regarding the level and quality of support for this issue. I will go on record as saying Apple really did well by me. Both in store and over the phone.

Just adding my name to the list of people who can not hear anybody on either end but the call timer is going. So far, it seems some have had success with a hardware replacement and others not. 4s 32 gb.

Im having the same issue with my iPhone 4S 32GB white. The speaker phone on/off trick works thoug. It would be nice to know if this is a software or a hardware issue.

I would really like skiping exchanging my phone since I got it yesterday.

Im having the same issue with my iPhone 4S 16GB. The speaker phone on/off trick works too. It would be nice to know what to do for this issue to be no more.

    Black iPhone 4s 32 GB

    AT&T

    iOS5

More of the same here. I am able to reproduce my problem over and over again. I would like someone else to try and see if it happens to them as well. First unplug headphones, then have someone call you, while the phone is ringing plug your headphones in and answer the call, all should be working at this point. Now end your call, leaving the headphones pluged in, place a call to anyone and your speaker light should come on and you should have no audio in headphones, internal or external speaker, clicking the speaker button will turn the light off but not bring back sound at all. the only thing i can do to fix this is wait 20 min or restart the phone, If i try to make a call without fixing the problem, the timer starts loggin the call time but i cannot hear anything and the person on the other end cannot hear me......i guess ill have to wait for an update.........

I am convinced its a hardware problem. Apple swapped the phone and the new one works flawlessly.

    Same iOS 5, same software.

Swapped iPhone 4s-64Gb today at Apple Store.  I had performed a restore from backup to the original phone, and did NOT resolve the problem.  Got a slight question from the Genius Bar guy who wanted me to restore to factory defaults.  After a brief debate as to the benefit, he caved and replaced the phone.  So far, audio problem with both headset and bluetooth resolved.  If you don't hear back from me on this thread within a week, you can rest assured it is a hardware problem that was resolved with a replacement.

Chiming in here to say that I had this issue on 1 of the 3 iPhone 4Ses that I have had so far (1 new, 2 replacements) and did not notice it with the others.  About 30% of the time the earpiece would not function when making a call and I also noticed that about 5% of the time the earpiece would 'work' but would have this terrible distorted sound to it (not the static / popping others are experiencing).  Because of the distortion I thought it must have been a hardware issue but perhaps not given how widespread the first problem seems to be.
