Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Update. I was facing the same problems.

-No outgoing audio 20% of calls

    -Echo

-Sometimes on the other side they couldnt hear me

I went to my carrier  in my country cuz here we dont have  apple store. I went to T mobile , and they took the phone for testing. They test it and found nothing , they just preinstaled ios. I am using my iphone for 5 days now , and there is no robotic sound , no outgoing audio and everything works perfect, i am still testing it now, but no problems . They said if  i am facing the same problem again  to call them and then they will take my iphone and send it to  Hungary for replacement, and i will have to wait for a week or to for new one. I hope that will not happend, so till now no issues i was facing after T-Mobile preinstaled 5.0.1 ios

The problem with outgoing call, when i dont hear anything and the other side doesnot hear me. My iphone 4s has ios 5.0.1. It helps if i tap speakers icon twice. Is there any solution?

I've got ios5.0.1 installed but still have the problem. I hear nothing when i call and the other side does not hear me. But, it happens only sometimes. It helps if i toggle the speakers icon, but its a workaround not a fix. So, really dont know to wait for a software update or exchange the phone (4s)

Hello, comrads! Sipping london pride noe can tell you that having made 40 calls and having not found the freaking no audio problem seems that i'm happy;)

Got replacement at regent street store in london. Curiously that in covent garden where i made appointment at first there happaned to be noone of the phone of my model, 64Gb black( went to regent str. next day(with appointment of course) seems that they don't make a move without appointment. I'm fine with it though.

So, i got there. Described the problem, told them that there's a 87 pages thread at discussion forum. Cute girl from apple told me that they usually don't read the forum cause bla-bla-bla (you know). I didn't manage to reproduce the problem, but i got replacement though.

All i can say is that is really disgrace that apple haven't responded on so long thread on so big problem. But to give all credit to them that they replace all the phones with the problem like that. Good for them!

And yes, i got my phone from a black box. I asked if the phone is refurbished. She told me that apple don't do the things like this, that the phone is completely new, it's just with no accessories. That doesn't matter for me if it works fine and looks like new one. So far everything is well.

Wish everyone to work it out either way. I would recommend replacement though. All the best

I would be interested to see how many 4s users have went to the trouble of going to the Apple Store Genius Bar, the tech could not replicate the outgoing call, no audio issue after performing a complete reset with default settings and had their phone replaced and the issue occurred on their replacement phone.

I am getting ready to go through the visit to the Genius Bar tomorrow afternoon and really don't want to go through this and hit another dead end.

JUST ADMIT THE PROBLEM APPLE AND TELL EVERYONE YOU ARE WORKING ON A SOFTWARE FIX.  THAT'S ALL I NEED.  NOT GOING THROUGH HOOPS AND WASTING MY TIME AND MONEY.  DOES ANYONE IN CUPERTINO HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE?

I had the same issue with my new ATT 16G 4S almost from the first time I used it.  The phone would also display "Authorization required" or "no sim card installed".  Yesterday after two weeks of these random issues, I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store where I bought it.  My genius acknowledged the issue of no audio on outgoing calls as a known hardware issue and I was given a replacement phone. My original phone was not even tested for the fail.  This symptom gets worse over time, get it swapped out ASAP under warranty. My new phone came with IOS 5.0.0 which updated over my wifi the first time I connected to IOS 5.0.1.  I have been very pleased over the years by Apple customer service.  Best of luck to you all...

I've got ios 5.0.1 on my 4s, but still, sometimes i don't hear anything when i make call. The other side also does not hear me. It helps only if i toggle the speakers icon twice. I am going to visit tmobile here in Slovakia today and ask for replacement or their advise. Apple please help, and fix the bug if its a software matter.

Same, restore and update to new build of 5.01 has not fixed the issue.

Seems like a relatively simple fix in software - when making a call using the ear-piece, have the sw toggle the speaker on/off straight away after dialing... but then again perhaps it is more complex. Will wait to see if 5.1 fixes it when formally released, I undertsand beta 2 has an inbuilt expiry date.

I have the exact same issues.  It's inconsistent, does not happen on everey calll.  Toggling the speaker phone (pressing it twice when muted call happens) does work. Purchased in US on Verizon network, running 5.01.  Did not notice these issues at the beginning with 5.0 but seems to be happening even more after the upgrade to 5.01. Anyone running 5.1 beta2 and having these issues?

Perhaps there is a common hardware thread - my serial # begins with C39G

    Hi all,

I had a similar problem which I've managed to resolve so I'd thought I'd share.

My phone the last day or so would phone out but with no audio, the person couldn''t hear me when picking up nor could I hear them. When I cancelled the call the screen would freeze. I then had to turn it off and back on again to unfreeze. In addition I could not receive texts or calls and when I sent a text it would go through but I would get a message failed notice.

After backing up my phone stuff I did a factory reset in itunes and restored from back up. This for me has solved the problem and it's all working perfectly. I'm waiting to see if the problem reoccurs or if it's permanently fixed.

    This is on a 4s 16GB with 5.0.1 OS.

    Hope this helps

I had the same problem as you guys: no audio during outgoing calls, fixed with speaker on/off.

I tryed restoring (installing 9A406), turning off bluetooth or siri, but nothing worked...randomly i couldn't hear anything when calling someone.

But something strange happened: Yesterday, after i got the phone, about 1 in 10 calls were with no audio. I also noticed that if i didn't use my phone for a period of time (about 10 mins) and then i called someone, i would have no sound (not even the tone). If i'd try calling again right after, it worked ok.

Today, it happened only once and i did call A LOT Orange Customer Support just to see whether it works or not.

So it seems the situation, at least for me, is improving by itself.

I'd still replace the device, just to be sure, but i don't think this can be done, at least for me: i replaced a lot of iPhones 4s for beeing damaged when i received them (they had all sorts of bruises and scratches).

I hope it's not a hardware issue, although the other phones that i replaced didn't had this problem.
