Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    Dear Brothers-in-Troubles!

Does anybody observe as I am? Today I was trying to make about 30 calls and "normally" it should be at least 5 defective. Today is only one!

I just decide to make an appointment at Genius Bar in London as I'll be there next week... And only one chance to exchange if the device will show it's usual behavior... So long trip from Moscow next time...

i've re-restored my 4s 32gb for the 2nd time with 5.0.1 9a406, the 1st time, the phone, after music play, represent the problem.

at today (5-6 calls), the problem is not present...

my "problem" is that i've installed film on all phone (40€) and the changing with new terminal was not good for me.

but, seen that the phone is under warranty, I will probably change, but I'm not sure solve the problem.

say it's better to wait until January for the official 5.1?

    • Hi,

For  my sins I look after blackberry's at work and my wifes Iphone at home.  She had a 3G for 2 years which worked great, then on Nov 11 upgraded to  an Iphone4s, since then we have had 2 iphone4s devices with the outgoing  call problem (high incidence of no audio, but if you click the  loudspeaker icon then all is well). The 3rd phone works perfectly. I did  the same thing to all of them when i received then, I upgraded the  firmware to 5.1 and loaded from a backup. The second phone was worse  than the first, it would virtually get stuck with the problem for  several calls and then would 'work' for a while. But the record of  making a successful calls without problem was only 14, I know that  because whilst waiting for my appointment to see a 'guru' i just kept  calling my  company mobile to see how bad the problem actually was.

Its hardware, dont wait for a fix, get a new phone before the warranty expires.

download the firmware and remove SIM card from device before updating. Then click Check for Update in iTunes with ALT button (on Mac,  is SHIFT on Windows), select the downloaded firmware and update.

      So much BS around here.

once more - my phone had the problem , now it's gone since I upgraded to IOS 5.1 beta.

in order to do it - you need to register your phone UDID on the apple website.

to do it you either need to buy a devlopers account ,

or get someone with a developers account to do it for you.

[some people will do if for a few dollars - look for it online]

after your phone is registered , you can Install the Firmware and apple will approve it.

do it in Itunes , press shift + restore , then you can select the file.

[make sure you do not upgrade to 5.01 ]

this solved the problem for me...

      p.s.

I would love to go to the apple shop and get a new phone

but the nearest one is four hours of flight away - so just upgraded the firmware.

      goodluck to everybody

and yes apple really fuXXXX up on this one...

So i went to the Apple Store earlier today and the chap tried to make an outgoing call after i explained the issue to him.

He encountered the same problem and without hesitation replaced the phone,

      So far its been ok!!!!!!!!!!

I had problems updating the firmware from 5.0 to 5.0.1.

I kept getting the message that the update was not possible because the firmware file was not compatible.

After several attempts it worked but i think it was via wifi as i had it connected to the pc and wifi.

So is the  general concensus that it is most likely a hardware issue and waiting  for a software fix isnt going to help? They said I can return the phone  and they will send new one but they will charge me $35 dollars  restocking fee. I am worried the replacement will do the same thing as  well and I'm out another 35 bucks, this is only 2 weeks old and I had  insurance, what a jip.

How often  does this occur? e.g. may be 1 in 10 calls? Got my 4S 64G last week. And  I haven't encounter such problem yet through the whole week. I'm mostly  on 2G, only tried with a 3G SIM once. Does 2G/3G matter? I'm on 5.0.1

      Thanks.

Hey, bro! I'm from moscow as well and already got my happy, got my phone replaced couple of days ago. If you're interested in, you can find my post where i described how it happend. My advice to you - don't worry about details how many calls have problem. Just go to the store, tell them that it's wide-spreaded problem that has over 90 pages on the forum (they're gonna tell you they don't read the forum (**** they do)) and try to repeat the problem. In my case i haven't managed to reproduce the bug cause the network problem (at regent str store they have bad coverage near genius bar) but they replaced the phone. Either they do everytime like that with every problem or they know about this huge bug and make replacement without big hassle. Sooner it's hardware problem so the best way to fix it is to get the phone replaced.

The only thing i wanted to advice make an appointment to the two store on one day. Cause in my first appointment in covent garden they have run out of 64Gb model, so the next day i went to the regent str store. So it took me two days to handle it. If you're out of time, try to get backup option in the other store, better on regent street

    Hey zelyak!

Thank you for your advise! I'm going to set an appointment exactly in Regent Strasse as it's much close to flat we rent than onters.

Thank you for advise about 2 app. So they do not care where you bought the device or you bought it in London? I'm asking because my one is from Finland (officially registered in Apple and so on).

You're welcome! I bought mine in belfast, northern ireland. Seems they don't really care where you got it, cause they didn't even check my receipt and so on. When you come there they are going to ask you just a serial. Then they check it and you got no prob with warranty. Also I brought all the stuff along with me (box with charger and headset) but didn't even get it from the bag, cause as they told me the stock for replacement and the stock for new purchases are the different things and i got replacement in the black box. So be ready to get replaced only a body, not all the package.

Good luck! Report back when you're done

I yesterday I opened the app "music" and when he was in the background, the problem was.

I then restored again, I've never used "music" and seems to work.

I am not sure it's a hardware issue. My wife had the problem and as soon as she restored to the new build of 5.0.1 problem seemed to dissapear. No problem in 2 days. We'll see if it keeps working great or  with use its showing again as she restored as new iPhone.

I'd need a sure way to prove that my phone has this problem to get it replaced.

I tried the background music app way but it isn't "working". From what i saw, it's purely random.

hello all, im back from the store (actually the service centre of my local carrier)

i explained the problem to the staff and put my phone their for 2 hours to check.

when i get back my phone 2hours later , the problem remains.

then the staff recommended me for an replacement (a service unit iphone without box,not refurbished)

i once again check the phone and the problems still here.

eventually the THIRD phone they give to me is fine (so far)

so my advice to everyone is to get replacement , do not wait for any software update .

    Sorry guys, completely offtopic below:
