Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Hey same problem just purchased new iPhone 4s 32g white could not hear when makeing outgoing calls finally took it back after two days apple swapped it out for a newly opened 32g 4 s that has the same problem. The rep told me that he hasn't heard of anyone having this issue it's my carrier since I'm using an unlocked phone. Same problems in Romania. I bought (mid November) my Iphone 4S 32 gb white with 269 € and a subscription of 49 € for 2 years. After one month, I am angry because I've already replaced in service 3 Iphones. If the fourth one is going to make anymore "audiogate" problems I am going to intend a lawsuit against Apple for selling a faulty product (and being aware of the problem). Shame for Apple!

Hello Everyone.  I would like to share my story here.  I have been quietly following this thread pretty much since I got my new iPhone in November.

The very first day I had my phone, I had the no outgoing audio issue, although I didn't know what was going on.  I thought it was weird and tried the call again and it worked.  I didn't think much of it until it began happening more frequently then I decided to look it, low and behold, a 60 something page thread about it!

At that time, it seemed the general consensus was that it was a hardware issue so I immediately called Rogers (Canada) and explained to them the issue.  The person I was talking to said his iPhone 4s did the exact same thing and he recommended I call Apple directly because it would be a shorter process to have them exchange the phone.  Ok I though, gave Apple a call and after finally getting through to the lady I was talking to she said she would send me the box within 2 days, I would box the phone and return it, and I would receive my new iphone a few days after.  Sounds simple.

10 days later I still had not received the box so I took a look at the email they send out after the request for replacement is made and the postal code was incorrect.  There was an N instead of a Z, which I attibute to Canadians saying 'zed' and Americans saying 'zee'.  No biggie, I called again and explained to the rep what happened, he took down my correct information and said the box will arrive within 2 business days.

8 Days later, when I had still not received the return box, I called once again, to ask what was going on.  After being put on hold for what seemed like an eternity the rep couldn't figure it out.  After another hold, she told me that she talked to the shipping department and that the return boxes were on backorder because there had been so many replacement requests, I suppose.  She said if you have not received your box within 1 week, certainly call us back.

10 days later, bringing us to last night, I called once again to ask what exactly was going on.  Once I had explained to the rep my whole story, she was rather speechless.  She asked me to hold, then came back and said after talking with her supervisor, they were going to transfer me to Tier 2 support.  Ok fine, hold for another 15 minutes and Tier 2 support is finally on the line.  He immediately looks at the file that was started for me (which must be pages long by now) and asks me to hold, sure why not?  Been on hold for 30 minutes so why not a little more, I just love their static hold music.

The tier 2 support finally comes back and says that after some digging, he found out that there was not even an attempt to send a return package to me.  The replacement request had been made multiple times, but no one had ever tried to send the package to me.  Perfect.  At least now it seems I have an answer.  He assures me that he has sent one (or requested it) and put a rush on it.  If I have not received it in 2 business days to call him directly.  Not really holding my breath.  Also, I am a little leary of sending my phone in if these were the hoops I had to jump through to get an empty box.

So last night, I had also read that the new build of 5.0.1 had helped some people so why not give it a try?  I restore and set up as a new iPhone with the new build and the audio problem is still there, but now coupled with a crippling text issue, text messages will not send.  I have tried rebooting/restarting but they just keep piling up.  Every few minutes some of them will send.  So I am not sure what is causing this issue, I will try another restore tonight.

I have long been a fan of Apple products, but I have also been a fan of Blackberry.  After much contemplation (and a quick glimpse at RIMs current standing) I gave up my beloved Blackberry and decided to switch to iPhone.  I don't want to say I completely regret it but this is getting a bit ridiculous.  Anyhow, I'll try to keep you guys updated with what happens next.  Just had to have a little rant, apologies for the long reply.

    [/rant]

A bit ridiculous? It's completely unacceptable! You should demand compensation for wasted time and unnecessary stress. You paid money for ONE functioning phone, not ten replacements, that was the terms of sale. So if they are giving you hassle just demand a refund and threaten legal action if they dont comply.

Just an update. Following the DFU restore and sync. My outgoing call no audio issue hasnt returned (yet) I've used it heavily all day and every call has connected. If it deteriorates then I will demand a brand new iphone that has been checked by the engineers at apple, if they cant do that then I will return for a refund. I'm not going on the replacement iphone merry go round with those Genius bar idiots. There's plenty of phones out there. Apple seem to believe their own hype now and think they can mistreat consumers and get away with it. They used to make quality products. I cant fault my macbook pro it;s the best tthing I've ever owned. So credit where it is due. That said I would never upgrade to Lion os because that is plagued with bugs galore.

Also iphone battery is at 44%. Not bad

    Is it the SIM card???

My son and I both have unlocked iphone 4s's - both bought in November from Apple.  I am with Koodo (Canada) and he is with Sasktel (Canada).

My phone has no sound on dialing out since I got it, have to toggle the speakerphone.  His has been fine from day 1, no problems at all.  Today, as a test, we swapped SIM cards, and guess what, my phone now works perfectly with outgoing sound, and HIS does not!

This suggests to me that its possibly a carrier / sim issue related to the iphone.

Has anyone else tried swapping SIM cards and see if the problem goes away?

I was on 3 SIMs. Original from the carrier Sonera who sell me the iPhone and then 2 another different carriers. No differences. No audio exist as it was. But the observation is that one day it turned less frequently, from 30-40% of calls to 10%. It was happened 3 days ago.

Its now my second day with IOS 5.1 beta 2 and still the "outgoing call no sound" issue didnt reoccur until now. And i call a lot in a day so i dont tested it with 1 or 2 calls a day.

I also used my headphones to listen to a couple of musics, unplugged the headphones also NO problem that its hanging on the speaker after unpluging the headphones.

And i need to say the battery drain is much better then IOS 5.0 and 5.0.1, however i did not tested the battery drainage but iam pretty sure its much much better

iam stil testing but i think in the final release of IOS 5.1 all of the problems will be solved !!!!

Apple will leave you in dark about the problem, because the problem is not clear repeatable. Its the same with Macs. So change the phone.

I had the same problem. It is something to do with Siri. If you can reset Siri by just talking something and stopping it or just go to Siri and turn it off and on again, it fixed the issue for me.

I am having similar problems. I have been using my phone for the past 1 month without any problems. Then today, when I tried to send a text, the sending bar goes all the way up to 95% and just stops there.

And when I restart my phone, message sending had failed. And there was no way to resend it.

Besides that, when I try to make calls, the person I'm calling can receive my calls, but can't hear me, and I can't hearr them. AND I don't even know that they've picked up cos it still shows up as calling on my phone. Then, when I try to end the call, I can't end it at all. It shows up as "ending call" but doesnt really end it. So when I click home button and click on the phone app again, it redials the person I last called. No way to stop it except by restarting my phone. But when i try to call someone again, the same problem occurs.
