Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    Yes.

The sound appears if toggling the speaker on/off.

Just got home.  Went to the Genius bar after I was given a cancelled appointment and basically had the same experience as the rest of you.

When it was my turn, I proceeded to tell the Apple guy about the no audio issue. He offered to replace my phone if I could reproduce the problem blah blah blah. I did it straight away and I told him I would accept the replacement if I could wait around to test the replacement phone out. I asked him whether the replacement was new and he said yes. I then sat in the corner chairs and made some blitz calls to my bank, hairdresser, mum, Pizza Hut and Speaking Clock - basically any number i could remember. After about the 20th attempt I managed to get the same no audio on outbound calls issue ON THE REPLACEMENT SUPPOSEDLY BRAND NEW phone. I showed him the phone and made him listen to the static on the line. He said he said it was my network and that he has never heard of this problem. While I was waiting for him to come back, three other customers in the bar said they had the same problems with their new 4s's and they were getting more irrate. When he came back he offered to replace the replacement phone. The so called Genius then went in the back AGAIN after seeing the look on my face. After a while he came out and said Apple are working on it as it's a known software glitch that will be addressed in the next update. I told to read this forum with interest as those of us in the retail store werent the only ones suffering from this problem.  After he spewed some more company line bollocks, I requested my own phone back as it at least has fantastic battery life and still calls with Siri (the replacement phone's batter was already draining as I called), plus I need a phone over xmas.

I have 18 working days left on my cooling off period, I am waiting until the new year, and unless a SUCCESSFUL UPDATE THAT ADDRESSES AND CORRECTS THE AUDIO PROBLEM is released by then. I am returning this £500 pain in the ****.

To say I am disappointed in Apple would be an understatement.

I have had no sound on outgoing call issue for 2 weeks but have been dealing with it by togling off and on speaker button, I had several times today when toggling the speaker didnt even work for me, it seems the problem is getting worse, hopefully they come up with a fix soon

I've done some testing on my iPhone 4S 16GB White with 5.0.1 that I got less than a month ago on TELUS (Canada).

When I push the name of someone from my Favourites and/or Contacts, I get this crackling noise right at the start, sometimes small and short, sometimes kinda loud and long.  But when this happens the call ALWAYS connects.

When my calls DO NOT make that crackling noise (tested 20+ times calling my wife), I cannot hear my wife and she cannot hear me.  But when I put the phone on speaker and then back it resolves it.  Also, I noted that when this happens, my mic is active because I can hear my own echo, and if you put your palm on the mic, you get the affect you get when you cover a regular microphone (the high pitch feedback sound).

I haven't been able to associate it with Siri as of yet, tried a few times with having done some calls on Siri then trying to manually do it, but there was no repetition.

When it didn't work though, it didn't work for 20+ tries in a row!!!  I had to do a soft reboot to get it to work again.

Either way, I'm probably going to get this replaced as I don't think I've read anywhere about anyone else having a crackling noise.

It seems that the reason is some muting system which depress the noise while answer waiting silence. Some times it don't recognize the answer and continue muting. Did you note that sometimes the first waiting tone is distorted and the second is good and loud? I did.

Kinst, I'm not sure what you mean by "waiting tone"

I do sometimes notice that when I'm unlocking my phone the button clicks are really loud sometimes and then goes back to their regular volume, is that what you meant?  If so, I can't find a constant for that, it's pretty random so far.

I think he talks about the dialing tone.

If that's the case, I think you are talking about what I refered to as the "crackling" noise.  Just to repeat myself though, every time that has happened my calls connected regularly, it's when I DON'T hear it that my calls have no audio.

Problem is back! Restoring my iPhone again to see if it goes away one more time. My issue is that I cannot recieve or make any calls. Same with text messages. No one gets through to me. It's as if I've bought an iPod that I am sometimes able to make calls with when the iPod wants me to.

    Not good enough!

Same problem here. Activated my phone yesterday and the problem occured on the vers first call.

Still wondering if I should return my phone or wait for an update as the speaker on/off trick works.

Apple needs to respond to this issue!
