Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Same issues with my black iPhone 4s 16Gb from Vodafone (Spain),  Outgoing call without ringing tone and timer started show the call was connected but heard nothing.

Apple, it's time to resolve it, wake up!

I have the 4S on Verizon and have the same issue with outgoing calls. However, it doesn't seem to happen (at least as frequently) unless I have a bluetooth headset connected.

Same problem for me... I bought a 32Gb free iphone in Spain. It happens 1/5 calls. I went to Apple store in Spain and they will replace my phone for another one if I want.

Should I change it? Will they give me a refurbished one? Is it a software problem?

I say you should change it, the will most likely give you a new one.

Make sure it doesn't have the same issue before leaving the store...

I'm having the same issue. iPhone 4s - 32GB - Verizon. My mother is also having the same issue, but instead on an iPhone 4 (not s). Thinking about visiting Apple tomorrow and talking to them about it and seeing what they can do. I'm pretty displeased, but it's the only problem I'm having. However, this is a big deal because I need to be able to make a phone call!

I can call out but all I see is the countdown saying how long I've been on the phone. I can't hear them, they can hear me, apparently. Estimating to be about 1 in every 3-5 calls.

I have no bluetooth connected. No headset connected. Simply just the phone.

I am in Thailand and bought from AIS last week, having same issues during outgoing call

    - roughly 20% of my OG calls, while initiate a call, it swap auto from either, Bluetooth , ear set, phone to the Phone speaker and I can only listen from the speaker could nor swap it back to any other devices. So I need to drop a call.

    - also sometime ie. 15% of OG calls, it count timer while the b party can hear me but I can't hear them, I have to put in speaker mode to hear and could not swap to any bluetooth, ear set, or phone mode itself.

I cannot believe its happened to me but I am sure I am not alone, today will ask them on replacement but quite certain the story will not end.

Report my situation, hope can help everyone here have same issue.(White 32G iPhone 4S bought from Canada)

    1. By turn speaker on and off quickly after out going call, this will let you hear most times. - Temporary method.

    2. Upgrade to 5.1B2 will fix this issue, just like mine. - Permanent method.

BTW, restore to factor setting/upgrade to 5.0.1(406)/replace with new one can not fix anymore.

I will report to you all if any further situation found. Drop a e-mail to me if you need my help.

I have the same problem with my iphone4s 16G black. I could not hear the outgoing ringing tone or the voice from the other side. It is ridiculous that a 700 bucks (I orderd an unlocked iphone) cell phone is not functioning as a regular cell phone.  I ordered it from apple online store and the closest apple store is 2 hours away. Called the customer service but they could not solve the problem. They did not even want to offer an exchange and just suggested me to return it instead. I am waiting for apple to solve this problem.

    Same problem here...

    - The only way how I can get audio is when I plug in the earplug and reboot the device, but when I remove the earplug, by playing a song, then it's continuesly running.

I assume that the phone doesn't know in which status it is, the problem accrue by pairing the phone with my car, after this no sound at all...

    This situation is really frustrating,

Got my iPhone sent to the repair service here in Belgium (which works for Apple). Got a new one yesterday. So far so good, hopefully it stays that way :-).

People who are still experiencing this problem: GET IT CHANGED NOW! I think that's the only way to solve it...

I have a black iphone 4s 16Gb bought in November (model no: MD235FD). I faced with most of the symptoms mentioned in this discussion.

No need to mention the temporary solution (toggling between speaker & handset). Have to repeat on each mute problem in outgoing calls (30-50%). Even this can not help if the speaker switches on automatically (5-10%) again no hope in conducting the voice to other party and I had to repower (sometimes twice repowering consecutively) in this type of error.

    Therefore I,

    (1) Tried resetting all settings. Setting as a new iphone. Problems reappeared in 24 hours.

    (2) Tried installing firmware 5.0.1 (9A406) and problems reappeared in 24 hours.

    (3) Tried installing firmware 5.1 Beta 2 (9B5127c) and all problems (except echo and battery drain) have seem to gone 100%. Made more than 70 calls in the last 3 days each connecting without any audio loss. ( Hope does not reappear after this much time & call... Knock on wood...)

Awaiting for the official release in which all problems solved and no new problems created.
