Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Just from Genius Bar. Easy replace - no questions asked, no checking processed (it's luck, the last days my iPhone shows much less "no audio" - 1 from 10 not 1 from 3 as usual).

I owe iPhone bought in Finland, originally locked on Sonera mobile network but then unlocked by operator. Replacement was made today at Regent Street, London.

I did only 3 calls so far, no problems. Let's see further.

    Observations:

    - new iPhone produce some noise when vibration... I've asked Genius and stuff told me that motor from motor has different infectivity... I tried all 20 iPhones at the store and yes, 5 of them produces some extra noise (only sensible if place the unit just to ear). But those units vibrates more sensibly. I think this noise is autofocus mechanism.

    - I take a look at my specialist's schedule on his iPad. It was about 8 appointments there but only mine was with "no audio"... May be he was right? What is it - 100 pages from 3 000 000 sold units?

OK, I'll check the battery and if it's ok, at least I replaced free of charge the scratched back cover.

PS: Please remind me the link where to check the serial number for the production date? I got blackbox unit but no one trace that it was even touched before...

I also have this problem: 16gb 4s at$t.  I don't make many calls - about 1 per day.  So, right now it happens 100% of the time on the first call of the day.  The next call always seems to work.

I suggest you do a google search first. Providing the link might be against the policy of this discussion forum. The important thing on installing a beta firmware is that your iphone's UDID must be registered under a developer account. Otherwise, you can not activate the firmware on Apple's servers.

I have an dev account with Apple. My only question is is it true that you need to be a paying dev in order to be able of installing the 5.1 beta 2?

And THE otter question is what is the fastest way of finding this beta2 because up till now i didn't found it...

    Many thanks though!

Add me to the long list of people having trouble with outgoing calls.  I don't make many calls but they usually fail whereby the timer begins but I cannopt hear ringing or the other person.  If  I immediately redial it will work properly.  I just got off a call with Apple Care where they had me do a reset (holding both buttons down until an apple logo appeared).  I then was able to make a call that worked but it was not the first call of the day.  The rep said its likely a hardware issue and if it recurs to go to the Apple store to get the hardware checked or replaced.

I already posted earlier, but I went through two phones with this problem. When all attempts with the second one failed, I went to the store and talked with a genius. He gave me another phone. I asked if it was remanufactured and he told me that it likely was not, because I had the 64 model. I asked if I could make several calls to test it before taking it. I made six calls without a problem. I asked if I was going to have to do anything when I got home, he sais no. I noticed that it already had 5.0.1 on it. Take it to an apple store if possible and get a replacement and test it before you take it. My sister got a white 4s yesterday and it does not have the problem so far.

Doing a network reset will termporarily fix the problem for me.  The fix lasts for a few days. Folks who are getting replacement phones and test it several times at the store may not have achieved the fix they think they have.   I would like to hear from those people a week or two after they got their replacement phone.  Did the problem come back?

My phone was replaced two weeks ago and restored from my backup with same settings, I do not have that problem any more.

Just got wife an iPhone 4S for christmas from AT&T. 32gb, white. Nearly 80% of the calls when bluetooth is engaged no one can hear her on the line. She can hear the caller, no one can hear the sender. When bluetooth is off, incoming calls seem ok, but probably 50% of outgoing calls no one can hear her. Phone is three days old! How can apple keep shipping these junk phones? Seems like Steve leaves and the quality control goes to zero.

What is apples official position on this? Have they even responded? Is this a software issue (that can be fixed with an upgrade) or a hardware issue? Are they working on it?

I am having the same issues.

iPhone 4s 64 GB on Fido network in Vancouver, BC

-person on other end of line cannot hear me during placed calls 50% of the time.

-much higher success rate on second attempt

-phone has been restored from backup same issue still exists

-phone has been reset as new phone and same issue still exists

-phone has been replaced but same issue still exists

-since replacement new problem has presented itself (in addition to old).  sometimes when placing calls using the handsfree headset speakerphone turns on and won't turn off.  at this point the phone needs to be turned off and then back on in order for me to place a call.

I'm typing this at the apple store right now while my phone is being restored from backup. Very doubtful that this 3rd restore will solve the problem.

I have had my replacement for almost a month. No problems like I had with the first two phones. My sister made a lot of calls today on her new phone and had no problems. I am sorry if you doubt that my replacement is not having the issue. I got my first one on release date and then took it in at the beginning of November and the next week, I was at the store again and they replaced it with the one I have now, which is not having the issue. The other two, I noticed the problem right away. I am happy about how things worked out. All the people getting mad, reminds me of last year when a guy came out with an iphone song which said, "If you bought an iphone 4 and don't like it take it back." It was on youtube. Don't doubt someone because they got a replacement and the replacement is not having the issue. I only wanted people to know that I got a replacement and it does not have the issue. If the issue really bothers you like it did me, go to a store if you can and get a replacement and before you leave, make at least six calls to see if the issue pops up.
