Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I agree that if it was a software problem that it should affect all iPhones with iOS5 running, or at least all iPhone 4Ses.  However, it seems a little fishy that this hardware issue is so widespread.  I also was just hoping from more answers directly from Apple before I try a 3rd phone.  I think my next new phone (if I have to get one) will be through the mail with an $800 charge to a credit card with the promise of a refund after returning the defective handset.  The closest Apple store is too far away for me to make another trip just for fun.

This officially marks the last time I buy an iPhone at launch.  I was hesitant because of the antenna issues last year with the iPhone 4.  Hopefully, with the growing size of this thread, we will get some more attention and answers from Apple.

I got my iPhone 4s 64gb and started experiencing this problem right away. I think it seems to coincide with me activating the hands free Bluetooth link in my car. After I leave my car and terminate the link, I don't hear any audio when I make my call unless I switch to speaker.  Meanwhile the call has gone through and the other end is hearing nothing as well.

When I get back to my car the same problem occurs with my hands free link.

It seems like the iPhone has a problem detecting when I switch between different audio interfaces.  This definitely sounds like an OS software problem.

Completely agree, buying iPhone at launch is a bad idea, I sold a perfectly good iPhone 4 and now at the mercy of Apple until this bug is fixed. After all this trouble I was prepared to wait for iPhone 5 and skip the faster processor, better camera and Siri, it's not that great to be worth the trouble.

I tried a DFU restore but the problem is still there.

Tried contacting Apple-support but they refused to help me. They just pointed to my service provider. Telenor (Sweden).

They on the other hand knows absolutly nothing. Really don't know what the next step would be. I guess i'll have too return it too the store and wait for them too service my 3 day old iPhone :/

I have had the same problem with my black 64 gb iphone 4s as everyone else on this post. I contacted Applecare twice now and they finally agread to replace the phone. It is due to arrive today. Does anyone know how to read the model / serial numbers to determine when and where it was manufactured. There could be a connection with where and when these units were manufactured. Please post your manufacture information and whether or not you have had any of these mic / speaker problems.

Don't thing it's coincidence.  I did a DFU restore, set up as a new iPhone and it fixed my 4S 100%

The DFU restore as a new iPhone fixed my phone completely.

Same issue here, as I stated in the other mic issue thread.  No amount or type of restores or resets seemed to work for me.  Took it to my Telus store, and I'm now without a phone waiting for them to test the phone and hopefully find this intermittent problem, and approve a replacement.  Pretty lame that out of the box we have these issues..  And so it begins, the slow fall of RIM.  Er.. I mean Apple.  :B

My wife and I have had the same issue since launch day.  Hers is a 16gb white and mine is a 32gb black.  Hers has the issue approx. 1/5 and mine is more like 1/12.  At first hers was doing it on every single call.  We took it into the store and they just turned the power off and on and it seemed to work fine, but then started up again.  Talked to AT&T tonight who gave me apple's number and notated my account.

My best guess is that it's a software issue related to siri in some way.

I also have a theory that more people have this issue than realize and likely just think it's a signal issue because they haven't thought to put it on speaker and back off again.

I am experiencing the same issues with my AT&T iPhone 4S 64G since day 1 I got the phone. It's really annoying.

My brand new 4S 32 GB is making the same. Specially when using bluetooth headset, it 1 of 10 times switch to speaker - with no chance of switching back to iPhone or headset :-( My Danish carrier (Telenor) said the would replace it, but after reading this tread, I think I will wait a bit for a hopefully firmware fix.

I have this issue (1/10) in my 4S 16 GB Black purchased 29/10, I am Vodafone Italy customer.

This is (for my opinion) a audio output switching issue, because appear with the integrated audio and the bluetooth headset (in my case), a simply switch the speaker on off solve the issues all the time.

I noticed when the GSM switch to another cell the problem go away for a bit.

I think that the only valid solutions is the DFU (with configure to new phone option) or a future firmware upgrade. The simply phone reset do not erase entirely the iPhone.

For my opinion it is not a HW related problems and try another 4S (probably refurbished) maybe with the same issue is not a valid alternative.

Hope in a firmware upgrade but for now I live with this strange behaviour.

I have this issue yesterday. The second attempt of powering the phone off and back on seemed to fix it.
