Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I'm dead serious, just like me most people leave the standard protection on the screen.

When I buy my little kid a toy and it makes too much noise, i put a bit of tape on the speaker and the sound gets muffled. That put me on this solution.

    Did it work for you?

Our problem is hardware ou software related and is intermittent.

The phone get mute on calls not muffled.

By the way I use a Power Support screen protector, recomend.

yeah that was the issue for you but some of us are regular users of these gadgets and we have bought regular film protectors that DO NOT cover the ear nor the mic, also this issue still goes for BOTH with the film protector and without it, if youve been following this thread by now you should know that removing the REAL film screen prtector does not solve the issue this is either hardware or software related.

In my personal opinion this is pretty much software related given the fact that everytime you make an outgoing call with siri 100% of the times it works, also making internet calls with with other apps like skype works perfectly, if it were hardware related all kinds of sounds coming from the headset would mess up but it only happens with the phone app. so theres something making conflict with the app.

Got my Phone straight from Apple online Dec 28th with 5.01 installed every single call no audio.  If I tap the speaker phone the audio comes back.   If I plug in ear phones the sound comes out of the ear buds and the phone at the same time.  So far 100% failure.  Have an appointment this evening hopefully they have replacements !!!

    @ OzPlanet

Probably nothing to do with this thread because sounds like my problem:  see my post above about removing the standard film protector. Does that help?

I think we should all report this problem to Apple in our countries. If we all write about it maybe they do sth about that. In different case they might lose many disappointed customers. Maybe, they will react when they'll get to know about our forum.

I bought my Verizon 32gb 4s on launch day and did not have this issue at all but the home button was sticky. I had it replaced in eary December. The serial number of my original iPhone began with DNP.

I made a call after leaving the apple store with my new replacemtnt phone, I heard the person say hello but they could not hear me. It happened a few more times that night. I took it back once again to apple the next day. They of course weren't apple to reproduce the issue after taking my phone in the back for 15 minutes, they suggested doing a software restore...long story short, same issue after the restore. I made another appointment 3 days later and am now on my 4th phone (3 replacements, all with the serial number beginning with C39) in a week. I have dealt with the issue until today when I was in the middle of a very important call and all of the sudden the other person couldn't hear me at all and hung up on me.

I decided instead of taking it back to my local apple store again I'd call Apple Care. I talked to a very nice rep who consuited with his senior advisor and came back onto the line with the senior advisor who offered me one of three options...I could either go back to the store for another replacement, pay $29 have another replacement phone sent to me within 48 hours, OR wait 5-7 business days and recieve a brand new factory sealed iPhone. I chose the new phone of course. He informed me that another rep would be contacting me at some point tonight to order the new phone...

He just called, i had to print and sign a document stating that they would charge my credit card $749 if I failed to return my defective device within 30 days, take a picture of it and email it back to him. He said he will be in touch through out the process and once I receive the new device. Im very satisfied with the way apple handled the situation and I'm hoping this one doesn't have the same issue

Just adding to the numbers here. I thought until I just now found this thread, that I alone had this issue. I make calls and once in a while I have no audio while the user on the other end can hear me. I've had every model of phone and the same service provider for all and this is the first iPhone (4S) with this issue. Fix it Apple!

Also just adding to the numbers: I have experienced the same symptom multiple times. Very confusing and annoying for everyone involved. Please let iOS5.1 correct this...

Where do you get not relevant to this thread, I had not audio.  Had my appointment with the "genius bar".  She made one phone call said "that sounds like crap, I'll go get you a new phone."

Trust me this is nothing to do with plastic film protection or any other cover, this is related with OS or Hardware audio. Nothing to do with the cover,  this problem is there even with the phone without the plastic protection. It a basic feature all phones have and this is really annoying and frustrating that my iPhone 4s does not support.
