Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I have tried the suggestion on here to amend these settings :

    Settings>General>Accessibility>Physical & Motor>Incoming calls>Headset

For no obvious reason I am getting a much better audio experience. So far all of my out going calls now have sound. It might be worth others trying this to see if it helps them.

I don't think this workaround will fix everything else people here are complaining about. I only brought this up because the guy I was responding to mentioned he used a headset. AFAIK this is only a workaround for the bug where; when you are unable to hear a person you are calling when you try to switch audio sources using the  'Audio Source' menu in the Phone app while a Bluetooth headset is connected.

What happened in my case was that everything worked fine until a few days ago when my iPhone alluvasudden began routing evey incoming call to the audio source 'Speaker' by default no mater what I did. When I tried to switch from 'Speaker' to 'Phone' or 'MM100' (my Sennheiser BT headset) during a call I lost the incoming audio stream and was unable to hear the person I was calling. The call counter, however, kept ticking. The headset's iPod remote functionality kept working, I could hear music just fine and I could terminate a call using the button on the side of the headphones... basically everything worked fine, just no audio at all no matter what source I selected.

I was also having this issue with absolutely no audio on outgoing calls, unless I hit speaker. I changed a few settings that were suggested in this feed and so far this has not happened again in about 24 hours. However, I am now left with static/crackling for about 3-5 seconds before every call.

The changes I made were Settings>General>Accessibility>Physical & Motor>Incoming calls>Headset (changing from default to headset)

I also turned off the Raise to Speak function for Siri Settings>General>Siri>Raise to Speak.

I can live with the crackiling until Apple comes with out a fix, which is hopefully soon. I had another person in my office have this same issue and they got a replacement phone, only time will tell if it happens again to them.

another unlucky and unhappy user. Same problem (everything seems to be fine except no sound when making outgoing calls). Noticed about a month ago when the phone was on 4.x, updated to 5.0.1 but the problem remains.

Tried a lot of "fixes", none is working for me. A little detailed story here:

So i had this problem since i got the iphone 4s 16 gigs, took me time to realise to tap the speakers to fix the problem.

Today was the max. Furestration, when i bought new car radio with bluetooth connection, first call went through just fine.

Second was iportant as i had to pick up a friend from a mall, when called through car radio blutoothe i did not hear him , and he did not, speaker did not work the closed the phone's bluetooth, place a call again , i heared him but he did not ... He called , i heared him , he did not.

Then i resatrted the phone and realised i left the pin code back home, finally , i am not happy niether with the iphone nor the car radio.

Just now i see its not only my problem, i will try some fixes, otherwise go for replacement which i am not sure how much data and apps i might lose as i am a new apple user.

I just wonder why the Complications, and why apple does not release a fix, and could they release the iPHONE without phonig capability, i love the device , i wonder if i would tried other , would I love it even more?

Well the problem also hit me today.

My iPhone 4s has been working fine since I got it a few days after launch in Denmark.

My problem is that I sound like a robot. The recipient can't hear me. This is the issue both for incoming and outgoing calls.

It only works when I press speaker. When turning speaker off the problem returns.

I have tried to restore to 5.01. Even here the problem persisted. After restoring back to a later version the problem is still there.

I have tried all the recommandations in discussion without any luck.

I will go and ask for a replacement of my iPhone tomorrow.

This is not good enough. The problem has been here without a fix since october.

Apple I know you can do better than this ...

    Same issue here.

I live in the Netherlands. Just bought an Iphone 4S 32GB (carrier is T-Mobile, although irrelevant) and realized this after a few calls (At first I thought my cheek or ear or whatever should be muting the call). I get this in like 1/5 of my outgoing calls. Obviously quite frustrating. Checked T-Mobile forums but very surprisingly could not find a post related to the issue. I did not try any suggedted solutions and I'm hoping that this is only a software issue that will be fixed in the next iOS release. Anything else about my phone is pretty OK, so I do not want to change it with a new one, which from what I see has the possibility to bring quite a wide range of other issues.

It is amazing to see that Apple does not confirm this officially and does not take action. If no official announcement about this issue will follow very soon, I will really start to believe that Apple is moving towards the very dark side of the market.

Same problem here. I am from Brazil, the 4s has been released here on december 16 and i bought one of the first devices (32 GB - Carrier TIM) sold in the country. The store is going to give me a new 4s but i dont belive it is gonna solve the issue. Please Apple, fix this as fast as you can or at least release a note acknowledging the problem.

    Thanks,

    Gustavo.

Here is my experience today. Went to the Apple store nearby (CA, USA, AT&T). Spoke to a lead over the phone. The genius leads ( 2 of them) couldn't reproduce the static problem inside the store, their own room inside, outside of the store (but inside a very busy mall). BTW, I have the problem of "outgoing call no audio" and "call failed". I told them about that. They connected the phone in diagnostic mode, but said couldn't find any problem.

I believe they are told by Apple to deny this problem. The first lead promised me the "new" iPhone last time - if I had the problem again. When I pressed for that -  the first lead handed me over to the second lead saying he has to go for a meeting. When I asked the second lead to come out in the parking lot (quieter than the mall) he refused. He said he can't give me a new phone - as it is against the manufacturer warranty. He gave a re-manufactured phone (C38, Oct 2011 built). This is my 5th phone. Set the phone as a new one (not restored from the iCloud).  I came out from the store and made a call from the car in the parking lot. The first call I heard had lots of static. The second call - "Call Failed".

I am really frustrated. It's pretty tuff going against a big company like Apple - if no newspaper/tv channel covers this story. The second lead told me that Apple doesn't moderate these forums - so nodbody from Apple cares about the comments here.

Geez, you have one dispiriting story over there. Especially the part with the car sounds like an unusually unhappy movie end.

Anyway, the fact that these forums are not moderated does not mean they are not read. I can imagine a bunch of Apple engineers beating off their heads and getting more stressed as this topic grows larger (in the case that they already haven't figured out a solution for this bug, of course. But even in that case, I can imagine some other marketing or whatever department still hating those engineers very hard, haha). It is right now not easy to estimate the customer scale that is affected by this issue, but given the very nature of the bug -that you CANNOT HEAR ANYTHING WHEN YOU CALL SOMEOBODY but they hear what you say- I think is going to be soon very, very big. I mean, it will definitely be on the digital media (it actually already is, just Google it) and I suppose all the TV people who get the bug in their Iphones will also get sick of it and will give Apple a beautifully prepared coverage. At least that is what I am hoping for.

You know, there was a time this company was not like this. Like, some time ago.

Well, everyone, I just got my FOURTH iPhone 4s today.  I have gotten  "brand new" ones during each return and not the "replacments" the genius bar brings from the back (I always get a refund and THEN buy the new one so the Apple store employee does not try to sucker me into getting one of their back room duds that is, more than likely, someone else's problem).

I am happy to report that my newest phone does NOT have the issue (yet).  I've made about fifty test calls thus far and there hasn't been one audio bug (earpiece, microphone mute, etc.).  My fingers will be crossed and I will report back if a problem develops.  I still don't know whether this is hardware of software related but I'm leaning toward the former since the newest phone seems fine (even after being restored from the backup of my prior "bad" phones).

My suggestion to everyone--keep taking the phones back until you get one that works.  This little bug has caused me so many problems this past week with my profession that it's highly embarassing.

.  .  . and yes, thanks Apple, for NOTHING.  I really appreciate how you have acknowledged the issue and told everyone that you are looking into a solution.  Isn't the iPhone 4s supposed to be a moderately high end product?  Isn't it "supposed" to be a phone first and foremost?  Perhapps the current corporate mindset at Apple has forgotten this.

Before I say anything understand I have been a faithful Apple user since the 3G. Today I am said to say Apple is the new Blackberry. I had the old blackberry storm before I switch to apple. I have to say the iPhone 4s is almost as bad. I have been dealing with apple trying to dance around the truth that this iPhone is by far the worse iPhone ever. I am sad to say this but honestly by the time they real ease the 5.1 which has been said not to fix any issues they we need, the iPhone 5 will probably be out. My battery only last 4-5 hours and that's only sending texts every ow and then and very little talk time. The buzzing sound happens atleast 3 times daily and my wife and I even get voicemails every now and then with the same buzzing sound. My brother was an iPhone fan/user before me and he got the iPhone 4s and took it back before the 30days because he was disgusted. He got the Samsung galaxy skyrocket and I have to say that the phone is sick. I expect apple to compensate us who have remanded faithful through their Blackberry era. They should do something for all of us. Maybe promise half price discount for the next iPhone?

Apple will regret not fixing this and trying to make us happy. Samsung is pulling hard on them, as much as I hate to admit it. I may jump **** if apple doesn't take ownership and fix this instead of ignoring it.

Out here in Hawaii, I can confirm the exact same issue with a new 4s purchased new years eve.

Problem started today while making several calls in a row with the new wired headset. Around the third call (outgoing) the speaker flipped on and noone could hear me.  Turning it off did nothing.  The audio still comes out the bottom speakers and there is no microphone.  Calls tend to drop alot after this too.  The phone becomes completely useless.

    Here's what worked -

    1.  Rebooting the phone = worked only for the first call made.  Then the speakerphone bug takes over again.

    2.  Turning SIRI off - worked for a few calls - all looked well. But testing the old "Voice Dial" command using audio control makes the problem return.

    3.  Establishing the bluetooth link with my New Mazda's hands-free phone system allowed me to call out via the car's voice dial assistant. (So far this has repaired the speaker bug -- and she's got a nicer voice than SIRI)

The phone is going back to ATT tomorrow for a refund.  I have no time to **** around with this stuff.

Wake up Apple!  What if I needed to make a 911 call???
