Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    Hello everyone,

You might try calling your carrier. I called AT&T and they had engineers look to see if there were problems in my area and lo and behold there are problems and they are trying to work on it. They text me updates to let me know that they are working on it. They texted me to call for more information, and the person told me that they had had a lot of calls with issues like this. So I recommend that you call your carrier and ask them to check their network end. My replacement phone is working great today after they have been working on the problems they found. Just a thought.

It's not a carrier problem. The problem is worldwide no matter who the carrier is. Also alot of times Siri does not even hear my voice. Hence, the problem is the phone itself..(Note to Apple.) I have already talked 8 of my co-workers not to get an iphone. Don't know have many they have told.Acknowledge the problem and fix it please. Also don't get to happy once you trade a phone in and it seems to work. Mine worked 3 weeks before it crapped out. Iphone 4s  16 gig..

Yes. It clearly is not carrier related. My wife does not have the same problem. Her phone (4s) is about 3 weeks newer than mine. My bad audio popped up from the very first day. Her phone is still fine.

    Mine is the same, shero89.

I have seen this same number from others who have mentioned their Serial No.

But I don't know whether "C39" is maybe a common number across all phones. Are you sure that is the production week?

I will check my wife's to see when she returns.

glennsam, I am not being too happy. I am at this point glad that I am not experiencing problems. This is my fourth phone. The third one didn't have problems until last Wednesday when it had three kernel panic episodes. Apple tech over the phone said it was the hardware failing and to take it in to a genious at the Apple store and have them replace it. The genious told me that the phone techs don't know anything and I showed him in the diagnostic log the three kernel panics. He glanced at it, told me he would take it in the back. When he came back, he said he didn't see the kernel panics in the diagnostic log and that he didn't think there was a problem I repeated that two of the kernel panics happend while I was on a different phone talking to the tech. I was not doing anything to the phone. He finally said if I was going to insist he would give me a replacement. He was even more annoyed when I asked to test it out before I walked out the door. I tested it for a while and had no problems. I am glad it seems to be working, but I am cautious, because the last phone was not having the audio problem as the first two did, it just had the kernel panic problem. So for now I am glad that it works. But I am glad too that I did call AT&T because they have found some network problems that they are now working on. So I do apologize for being glad right now and I was only offering a suggestion.

    Hey,

i am also experiencing the same problem, and its very frustrating when you want to make a very important, very very important phone call and you can't hear the other person, and they can't hear you. And by profession , i am a doctor ( health Related). And you can imagine this thing can be how much dangerous, so what would you suggest to me now. To change to another product because you people didn't answer or didn't tell the solution in a respectful manner. Also battery problems, the battery even drains out soon on 5.0.1. Why are we people giving you lots of money, for this low standard contraversial issue. Or may be these Applers are not sincere to Apple anymore, creating bugs that the loyal customers and can switch over to other phone brands. And may be they are getting their share to do so and bring down apple on its knees. Its a very big disappointment for loyal customers of Apple. Because we are always buying very expensives phones which are the most expensive i believe. And what we get in return, no audio during a call, low battery life, no quick support from Apple, and no Radio in a 800$ phone. Then how do you call this phone the latest and 3rd Generation media phone. After steve's, no one has the guts in the company to keep it to a well standard. And they don't have good idealogists anymore. So, better come with a good solution and put a damm radio in ur next Iphone

I just looked. My wife's serial No. Starts with C36. And like I said, she has not been having the problem.

C3... (or C38/C39) seems to be the factory code and not a production week, which - I think - is next in combination of digits.

DN is definitively Foxconn, C3 (or C38/39) just a "factory" in China. I got information that my iphone came from 42 week (October), and the former one which I got replaced was DN from 44 week (November).

And by the way: I think when Apple reads this is just loughing about us! They know much more then we can check in internet ;-)

No need to apologize. That's what Apple needs to do for not at least working with us to fix this problem. We all paid alot of money for these phones and it's hard to beleive that a company as big as Apple could release them to the public without knowing there was a problem. Sure we might expect a few to have problems. But just look at all these post. Just keep passing the word like me to your family and friends not to get one of these phones until something is done. Let's hit Apple in the pocket book to remind them who they work for.

Maybe someone with the latest beta of iOS 5.1 can confirm, that this issue we're all talking about has been fixed?

Read this post at http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10115102-233.html on how some are fixing their audio issue. Have not tried them yet but since we are digging at the bottom of the barrel thought I wouuld pass it along. If it works for anyone please let me know.

    (Solution 1)

If you experience an issue where the iPhone suddenly refuses to deliver audio through the earpiece (you can't hear phone calls, speaker not working, earpiece not working), only delivering audio when the speakerphone option is turned on, or an issue where no audio is delivered through headphones or the Apple stereo headset, there is a simple fix that we also noted as part of our iPhone Update 1.0.2 coverage: unplug then re-plug headphones or any other compatible device into the iPhone's audio jack several times. This simple routine has solved the problem for countless iPhone Atlas readers.

    (Solution 2 Post From Site)

I just Fixed my "Stuck in headphones mode" not allowing the speaker to work. I tried the Headphone jack plugging and unplugging, 30+ times, didnt work, Tried Cue Tip, Didnt work.

blowing in to the headphone jack didnt work, but what i DID do was seal my lips around the headphone Jack, Blowing directly IN to the headphone jack pretty hard, fixed it instantly. Never had the problem again.

Some people in here said it is ok after they tried the 5.1 beta 2 update. But if you look online other people say not to keep our hopes that it will be fixed. I am stuck with an iphone 4s only 8 days old with rhis problem since apple store doesnt exchange mine with a new one cause they claim they dont do that without the approval of the Apple HQ.... Paid 700 euro for the 4s and cannot use it properly....
