Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Apple does not participate on this forum. It is a user-to-user technical help forum with no Apple presence, other than hosting and administration.

Ok so after the battery issues plaguing my iPhone 4S, my phone's started suffering from Audiogate as well now.

It was working absolutely fine. Then I go into music to play some music through the bottom speaker while I'm driving and wham! no sound. I reboot the phone and realize ALL sounds including phone lock unlock, keyboard clicks, and the speaker at the top have no sound. It doesn't ring when I receive a message but it rings when someone calls me. I also can't hear the person on the other line but they can hear me fine. I can hear them when I turn on external speaker though.

I've tried hard reboots, normal reboorts, resetting the settings but nothing's working. I'm going to restore the phone now. Hope Apple fixes this because as a first time customer of any Apple product, I'm very disappointed.

So, I have called the apple tech support to ask for replacement, the last chance for me was to restore, and did not work. and the problem just got worse with the time.

Interestingly, They mentioned that its a hardware problem, meaning any fix will be only a turnaround. I am still surprised that apple did not put official statement about this.

As someone here mentioned, i think everyone who has the problem needs to call apple support, to indicate that the problem is real.

This is probably another problem You have! Try this:

This became very annoying, so I called Apple Support (1-800-MY-IPHONE) and the workaround they had me try was to plug and unplug my headphones 5 consecutive times as fast as I could.

My old 3G got the same issue, but I solved it that way once for ever!

I have exactly the same problem. Mobile carrier is Megafon (11.0), Russia, iPhone 4S model MD261ZP.

Looks like the problem appears first time after I've tried to play with Siri. Can't remember if it happened before enabling Siri at least once. Once Siri enabled, audio drops from time to time, regardless if I disable Siri or not. Also I use bluetooth headset (a must for driving in Russia) several times per day.

So enabling Siri at least once broke iPhone 4S' outgoing audio for ever. Regardless if one use bluetooth headset or not.

It seems you are right. I have my one swapped three times and each after the first was ok. The only difference that I didn't activate siry even once on replacement iPhones, only on the first one.

The Huffington Post has finally picked up on this story, mind you it's almost 3 months since the iPhone 4S was released.

Yesterday gave up wait for Apple end was at TIM store (local carrier in Brazil) and ask for a replacement.

I got the brand new 4S and just (just that!) activate using 3G and dial an number.

First call is fine, the second get muted...

After a few calls I have the most muted too.

I even go out the store and the iPhone present the issue. So I think activate Siri, BT, conect to iTunes... all this don't star the problem, the problem is inside the bad iPhone and will show you no matter you do or not do.

Before leave the store I ask for another replacement. Who lives in Brazil know that was not easy to get this new one but I don't accept a bad phone as replacement.

Open another brand new, activate and started to use. Made about 70 call before leave the store, 100% works fine. Ate home sync with iTunes and made about 20 call, all fine. Install ALL my old apps and test again, all fine. Activate Siri, used Siri sometimes and back to make calls, all fine. Conected to my BT car audio, all fine. Made some call with voice control and Siri, all fine.

So I'm sure this is a hardware related, can even be triged by a software bug but if are just software why some works fine an others don't?

I have 3 identicals 4S in hands, with the same firmware and just one works fine. We buy and expensive product and must demand for new one until have one working fine. Don't think wait for new software that maibe will fix is a acceptable solution.

I'm in second day of use, tried all features of the phone and all work very well. All with this issue shoud go to store and ask for replacement. Let fill Apple with defective iPhones to they learn to have a good quality control.

I just got the replacement, fist 5 calls are fine, one quick call from car BT is fine, I am worried to activate Siri, as some guys posted that it can create the problem again, but I will do it right after work, testing other things and I will let you know. the courier who brought the new iphone and took the old,  was already aware of the problem, Surley Apple is aware, but decided to see how it goes relying in thier strong reputation in the market.

DON'T activate siri even if your life depends on it

i think activating it may trigger the problem

I disagree because I tested and has not generated problem.

You bought a phone with this feature, it has to work.

If the user Naitham is telling the truth and an Apple employee has told him about the hardware nature of this issue, then I highly doubt, that disabling Siri will somehow help in most of the cases.

By the way iOS 5.1 beta 3 was released yesterday, I hope the final version is coming soon.

i said it may trigger the problem not 100% sure the first thing i did when i got my phone was activating siri & the second thing i did was calling a friend of mine & all i heard was an echo i thought maybe it was a network problem but it continued to happen frequently until i found out about this problem , so lets say if siri was causing this problem & in order to avoid it you have to disable it, will you continue using it ? even at the cost of causing problems with the most important & basic feature of the phone which my old nokia 3310 can do it better ?.I'd rather disable siri if it fixes the problem until apple fix this

Living in Japan and just got the 4s on the softbank network. But it only happens when I try to call a certain few people - it's always the same people. So, same problem over here and to make matters worse apple stores are very difficult to locate in my area.
