Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

YES , zenberg, I recall,I am 90% sure the technical support mentioned that it seems a hardware problem, and adviced for replacement without other suggestions. the sales suggested restore. but technical support mentioned HW defect, my restore did not help anyway.

I still post after activating Siri later today.

If  you call a number using siri the call will connect 100% with no problems so thats why i think it's a software problem

Same issue hear on East Coast US. I have both the no audio and the speaker default issue when using headphones. I have had Vzw and Apple both involved and restored my phone, at the request of both Vze and Apple, with no changes in behavior. I'm regretting the upgrade from the iphone4 at this point.

I submitted the story to Engadget and TheVerge, so let's hope they'll cover it as well.

Is this is a software issue and Siri maybe trigger the problem why a restore don't solve de issue?

Siri can't cause a permanent damage even you restore, it is just an app in the iOS like phone, message, mail. If you restore all files will became same as brand new.

I just called apple support and reported this issue. They told me to restore the phone and if that doesn't work than it's deffinitely a hardware problem. Then I should return it to my resseler...I hope this works because my resseler will keep my phone in repair at least 2 weeks...

    Ok, let's add another post

White 64 4s, just made a call and went to put it on speaker phone, other person couldn't hear me. Plug in the headphones and all is well. Unplug all is well, press speak phone button and no joy, however if I play Daley Thompson Decathlon on the speak button it seems to work albeit intermittently - what gives, £££££££ spent on the phone and this is how it acts - Apple shape yourselves and get this sorted - iphone5 my arse!!

I am facing the same problem. Sometimes one of my 20 outgoing calls is muted, sometimes 1 of 3. But I noticed that when my data is off- the problem appears more often, I have sometime 5 of 5 failures when my data is off.

So, do I have to go to Apple Store and ask for replacement ( I finally got a perfect neutral tinted screen with the best and even backlight I've seen) and will most probably get a unit with more ore other problems, or have to wait for iOS 5.1 to come out? Suggestions?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Apart from this audio issue, my phone is fantastic and so I am, so far, refusing to part with it. I personally am waiting for 5.1 to see if it solves my problem. If it doesn't, then I'll have to start looking into alternative options, like returning it for a replacement.

I have posted this before and do it again. The 4s is a perfect phone, when it works. I just had to change my phone one time. I had the audio problem with the toggle speaker fix, went to the store and got a new one.
This one works perfect. It was pre installed with IOS 5.0. I did a complete restore from my old fautly device, and upgraded to 5.01. I use Siri, bluetooth, listen to music and everthing that you can do with it and it has been perfect for more then a month. I am a heavy business user, so I use this phone all the time.

Battery is better then my old 4, its faster and the sound is better with music and calls.

If it was software related, I can't understand why some phones works and others don't and that the error is gone with my new device.

You that have this problem need to get a new phone. Maybe 5.1 will fix it, but it will be a fix that will make a work around defect hardware. And if I where you I would not want a defect phone with a software fix.
