Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Just met with a genius at Apple atore in Brisbane AU after having this same issue. The guy confirmed it was in fact a hardware issue according to him and phone was replaced free of charge no questions asked.

The test he ran was to record a voice memo and then play it back in speaker mode then turn off speaker and no surprise there was no sound through the ear piece speaker.

This confirmed to him it was hardware and that was the end of it.

We'll see how long this new 4s lasts, hopefully no problems on this one.

After trying so many here and there for a week, I had given up hope. Problem was still there when I made a last call yesterday. Supprisingly or I rather say magically, without doing anything my phone started to work perfectly when I made the first call  this morning. No need for speaker mode or ear plugs.  Isn't this weired? Now I'm yet to find out for how many calls it will behave normal?

    It's kinda magic, it's Apple!

I am in Italy, and I had the same problem since December the 8th when I bought a black 4S 64Giga at the Apple Store in Bologna. No audio on 3 calls out of 10, and sometimes fails text messages, sometimes echoes my voice. I can't use earplugs anymore, since they block the microphone and I have to restart the handset.

Quite annnoying ... I toggle the speaker button every time I place a call and I'll wait until the official release of 5.1; if it doesn't fix it, I'll go for a replace. Such a super piece of technology, it's just a pity it doesn't work like that!

I've been using my replaced phone about month and call issue didn't come back.

    It's hardware related.

No problem even when updated on 5.0 to 5.01.

I've tried this test 50 times and mine always plays the voice note throgh the audio choice I have selected. Until Apple makes a statement that it's hardware i don't believe it. A tech at a store is only guessing just like everyone else.

    Hi there,

I am new here & was interested in your post because I too went to the Leawood KS store for the SAME ISSUE.(I live in Overland Park) I got my phone (iPhone 4S, black, 64Gi) when it was released & have been attempting to get a fix since then. Here's my story:

    1. First Genius app. in Leawood KS about 3 weeks after I got my phone- Told them I can make a call, it rings, person answers & then they can't hear me 40% of the time. Genius asked me to duplicate it in the store & of course the call went through. They sent me HOME & said phone appears to be working just fine!!

    2. 7 weeks later I finally set up another appointment (I have a child with autism & it's a challenge to make time to get there) as the phone issue had not changed- I spent 2 1/2 HOURS there while they restored my phone & "fixed the mulitiple software issues". Left the store & my phone was WORSE!! (now texting problems as well as phone call problems)

    3. Yesterday (Jan. 11)- 3rd genius appointment. I insisted on a new phone. Dork gave me one, but did not help me set it up AT ALL. He told me it would not need software updates (it did need them), would work with iCloud, blah blah....I ended up having to set it up all myself, re-download all my kids apps....sigh more waste of MY time after spending a ton of dough on this phone.

Long story short I finally have a new iPhone 4S after being completely annoyed by this phone for over 2 months. My iPhone 3G NEVER had an issue. The last Genius appointment told me "it's likely a network issue as it's only happening with AT&T users". Sigh.....super disappointed. I just hope this new phone does not cause me any issues. I am really bummed that Apple never made an announcement. I never realized that I was not the only one having the same challenge as me till I just spotted this thread this morning. I am nervous my new phone is not going to work still. What happended? Hardware issue? Can't be software as we put all new software on my last phone & it got worse! I really doubt it's AT&T....lame excuse from Genius.

I woud agree with him and the return rate if folks werent returning 4 or 5 phones to finally get a good one. the numbers don't add up to what you have been told. i have read quite a number of post from people that have 5.1 beta 3 that have indicated the propblem is gone after this update. i don't believe any tech. When Apple finally addresses the issue I'll believe what they have to say.

I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy. Really regret wasting my hard earned money on a phone of such inferior quality. oh, did i mention that i also have the rattling annoying vibration sound and the ugly yellow screen too.

I finally got a unit without OCNA effect. Since my last exchange I did not too many calls but no one without audio. My old one was with at least 20% of defective call but now not. Happy that the new one have also a better than old battery performance, silent vibro and no tint on screen. Observing people who were at genius on regent street, I'd like to say that I saw nobody else complaining with OCNA. I been there three times, got three iPhones and no one with audio missing. I swapped them by another reasons - sound with vibro, low battery life.

Final one is C39, assembled on week 49 and come in black box.

By the way, the last genius said that all black boxed are not REFUBRISHED but REMANUFACTURED. while the first said "new".

What is "OCNA"? I just got my 2nd iPhone 4S, 64GB yesterday.Still having problem with getting sound on 40 percent of outgoing calls & now i have an additional problem- keyboard locks up!! I exchanged my 1st one for the same reason. (trouble making  alls out, but no keyboard issue on 1st one) This second one came out of a black plastic box.  So frustrated!! Not sure what to do from here. This is my 2nd 4S with issues & I have been dealing with this since it was released a few months back.
