Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I was asked by the Apple dev team to replicate the no audio problem and upload the console logs (I logged a bug with Apple about 2 weeks ago over this).

I'm on the latest build of 5.01

The logs showed lots of interesting error messages relating to setting audio parameters, gain, volume levels. I'm not posting the logs as they are full of identifying info etc.

Looks like the software knows it has a problem controlling the audio - and does not appear to be a purely hardware problem.

    Thats not true!

If you read a couple of pages before, me and some other guy instaled beta 5.1 not being a developer.

    Download it here http://www.multiupload.com/UN5F70GHG0

Then go to iTunes, backup you iphone.

Then hold ALT (if you on MAC) or Shift (if you on PC) and press Update and choose the file you just downloaded. The update will start.

As I said before, this is my fourth day after update on 5,1 beta 3, and I have no audio issues anymore.

    @mureshan,

the fact that 5.1 beta3 helps is nice, but the point brought by several people that HW replacement fixes the problem is really worrying.

if one has a choice to wait for *possible* SW fix in 5.1 or going for *certain* HW fix now in 5.0.1 which one is he going to choose?

unless Apple is looking to handle thousands of RMAs due to OCNA problem they should come forward explaining what is the Exact Bug Id, which phones are impacted and how and when is the fix going to be delivered.

this is pretty much the most expensive phone on the market and anything less than excellent support and functionality is not acceptable.

    thanks,

    mio

    I think no

I didn't test Siri, because there is no sense in it here in Russia, but all other features seems to work fine.

Audio problem had gone, and also echo problem had gone and the problem with first quiet beep on outgoing calls had gone too.

How exactly did you obtain the console logs? It would be interesting to see those error message since I'm a developer myself (although not an iOS developer at the moment hence my question).

You, people, have to stop saying it is HW related..

If it was, I wouldn't be able to fix it via SW update (beta 3).

So if most of you , guys, want to go for replacement and get something much worse with yellow tint screen and uneven backlight, which wouldn't be exchanged so easaly by the Genius- them go..

Or do it like me- I have beautiful screen, strong backlight and everything is perfect- I just had to update to 5.1 beta 3 and  all my troubles are gone- no Genious bar, no nerves, no wasted time ... How easy!

    @SpAwN_BG

There are reports that people fixed the problem by doing HW replacement. One of my colleagues actually.

So unless Apple comes with clear statement on what is the problem and when it will be fixed, your statement on SW root cause is as valid as the HW root cause and it's up to each of us to decide what to do with own very expensive toy.

I chose initially iPhone over Android exactly to avoid the discussions such as the one we're having now.

I have the same issue on my AT&T iPhone 4S - 16GB, but for me, it happens on 7 in 10 outbound calls (no outbound audio when dialing). The call shows as connected - the timer is counting - but I can't hear the party on the other end when they answer.  I also experience the speaker automatically turning on when dialing out on about 1 in 10 calls.

It's funny that they have these emoticons, which are very appropriate to how I feel about my iPhone 4S:

I think if you pay a lot for a toy you should at least have a working toy, right?

I change mine and now have a nice 4S, with a good backlight, nice colors, working Siri, mic and all features.

Sorry but I don't think just one reason to not replace your defective iPhone if you can. Why pay to have a beta software if you pay for a working phone at the store??

Back to store, replace yours and stop to cry and wait for miracle cures from Apple.

If you want to fool yourself ok, but this is a hardware issue. Some hardwares issues can by bypassed by softwares changes, but you will ne to wait. Sorry but I prefer have a working phone right now.

By the way, today is one week using a perfect iPhone 4S!

Look, pal- I have past through 12 4S' to get one with minimum problems- 12!!!

I am not crying at all, it's a question of preferences. Just like you- now I have perfectly working phone. I don't care it is a beta SW as long as I don't have any troubles with it. It is not possible for me about 30-40% of the iphones to be HW defective! If it was one batch- ok, but here we are speaking about different S/N and factories.

For me this is SW glitch, which appears when specific combination of settings, usage, data and network persist.

For some this can appear in week, for other in months or never if this glitch somehow is avoided to be activated by some reason.

I have not paid to have a refurbished phone ( nothing against, just fon't like it) if there is a proper solution. I am not fanatic about it and as long as it works- I am happy .

I have seen scratched new devices, bad backlighting, static noise, dust under the screen, yellow screens, interlaced "flicker" screens, so I don't have so much free time and nereves to go over this again, and certanly these problems are far more disturbing than one beta software.

    So good luck for you.
