Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

ok, I had enough this morning.....outgoing calls just wouldn't work at all last night. Incoming, no problem. Tired waiting for software update. I had been doing the tapping of the speaker all the time to make it work but the last straw, couldn't call out at all last night. New phone this morning from Apple Store. This is my 3rd phone 32gb in 1 1/2 months. My advice.....go get new phone, send all the CRAP back to them. We paid a lot of money for these then to wait for updates, and if they do not have the decency to say they are coming out with update, then screw them. Sorry for my rudeness, but enough is enough. New phone now working just fine, the way it is suppose to. Time will tell what else goes wrong now. My fingers and toes are crossed, and my BLACKBERRY is plugged in!

iPhone 4S Cosmote, Romania, same issue. Outgoing call, the other person hears me but I can't hear a thing. Almost the same thing with the handsfree on. Initiate call and when the other person answers, the phone switches on speaker, but he can't hear me. Hope this is a software problem and they get a fix really quick. Is getting annoying!

    Thanks Brandyn.

Since I'm stuck with the phone and unable to exchange, I think my chances are better with upgrade. The OCNA issue is driving me crazy and with bluetooth it gets  worst.

Anyway, yesterday I upgraded. I havent seen the problem yet, and so happy to sync properly with my cars bluetooth.

I am sure now its a HW issue, and that apple is trying to find a SW solution for it. However, they should have had the decency to admit it, rather than leave us out in the open.

So if you can change then your lucky, but if not then 5.1 beta 3 is the door to choose

Exact same problem with my 4S 64gb, bought it 2 months ago. At first, it happened only a few times and I thougt that it's was a problem with Fido, my network supplier, so they reset my network settings on their side and I reset all settings on my side. It worked fine for a few days then the speakerphone problem starts to reappear more often like 80% of my outgoing calls. Then I went to the Apple store to have it check and the not so "Genius'  told me that it was probably the SIM card that was defective, but he suggest me to restore the whole iOS so I did. That didn't fix the problem at all. Therefore, I went to replace my SIM card with a new one. I did many tests and I didn't experience the problem that day, so I finally thought the problem was solved...wrong!! This is clearly and hardware issue. Very annoying it is!!! mostly for the people you have to disturb 3-4 times before they can hear you talk. In the end, I just called Apple Care and they scheduled me an appointement at the Apple Store, again!! now that I see all these posts about that problem, I can't believe that nobody at Apple seems to be aware of it. They should pay more attention to the bug reports on this forum instead of keeping their head shoved up their ***. I never been a big fan of Apple, now I really start to regret my purchase...

I am so glad to read all of the above! Well not every one of the 144 pages in this forum topic but enough to know I am not alone. When I bought my phone in November 2011 initially it displayed all the symptomes but ususally after calling a second time the audio would work ok. I thought it was a teething problem so after persisting for a few weeks the problem seemed to go away. Today the issue occurred again when I called my Dad using Siri. It did the same with three consectuctive calls when using my contacts buttons. My dad called me back, he must have seen my caller id?

Sitting with my dad I called his home line again and the problem did not occur. In my case the problem is quite sporadic since the first week of buying the phone. If it happens again I will get a new one.

    Hi all!

Bought 4S and after 2 months it started having this outgoing audio problem. Apple has been replacing these phones with refurbished units which have only 3 months warranty and they can have the same problem?? Since my phone still has 10 months to go I'm not very eager to do that kind of a trade. Having iMac with no problems during 6 years and just good experiences with my iPad, I have to say I'm feeling a little bit disappointed with this phone... Or maybe it's because of this silence Apple is having for the problem. Sure we all paid big money for the phone but good customer care isn't about money.

Kind of the same problem with my iPhone 4. I can hear everything in outgoing calls but no one can hear me, this is regardless of whether I'm using a headset, speaker, or the phone itself. Incredibly annoying.

I've managed to get a couple of words over the phone while almost juggling the phone and pressing the edges in different ways but nothing that I've been able to sustain.

I've tried resetting my phone to factory settings aswell as updating to latest iOS but nothing helps. No point in keeping a phone that can't be used as a phone anymore.

And to clarify, I haven't dropped my phone or anything like that. In my very limited experience with this bug it feels like it must be a software glitch.

The phone still registers voice commands when I try them but as soon as the call is placed no sound gets through.

Got an Unofficial feedback from an Apple person that suggested me to restore the phone, through itunes, and restore it as new.

I did it, it worked for a few days and now is back to the same.

Extremely frustrated, especially given Apple's reluctance to address the problem. Maybe a compalint to the European Commissioner might help them.

I have the same problem  with no audio on outgoing calls (iPhone 4S, 32GB, black, bought in dec-2011) in Orange Slovakia network. I just put the phone back to Orange for a repair.

From my experience, the frequency of the audio outages seems to vary widely. I had a time when I made 15 calls without any problems and then 5-7 calls in a roll with no audio. Sometimes each second call had no audio. I also tried to make calls with something close to the proximity sensor and calls without anything close to the sensor. Nothing seems to help.

Wow. Based on when you purchased your phone it's obvious that the problems are still on te newest batch of phones. I for one am sorry I ever upgraded to the 4s. The silence on Apples part has me really upset and thinking of buying a used 4 or blackberry from eBay. I'd go exchange my phone, but I've read tOo many posts where some have had to exchange their phone 4 to 5 times to get a new one and the closest apple store is 2 hours from me. This is an epic fail if you ask me.
