Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Just switched out my phone with Verizon directly via their phone support.   Still same issue and if anything it is worse with this replacment.

It has to be a software issue of some sort.

This is our 4th phone with the same issue.

1- First phone (original)- Outgoing call no audio (OCNA)

2- Apple Store replacement - replicated Outgoing call no audio (OCNA) in store, replaced, took about 1.5 hours

3- Apple Store replacement #2- replicated Outgoing call no audio (OCNA) in store, replaced, took about 1 hour

4- Replaced from Verizon.  I called up verizon, told them to look up "Outgoing call no audio" for Iphone and he found this thread.  He sent replacement.  Still having issue.

Looking up the serial on the latest it shows it was produced in China C3 in January.

I really hope Apple get a patch out soon.

I got my phone in November!  Just got off the line with Apple tech support.  Told me to do a 'Reset' and call back again if no go.  Kinda like 'take 2 asperin & call me in the morning'.  Sigh.  I will dutifully try it again. What else can I do?

When you request product replacement, Apple will mail you a box in which you will package and send your phone. Shipping is completely free and very quick (24 hours). You will be provided with a tracking number and a repair ID which will show you where your phone is, and what stage of repair it is in. The tech team will take a maybe a day to diagnose, and will immediately ship you a new phone. All-in-all, it will take less than a week. I sent mine out on a Friday afternoon and got it back on Wednesday afternoon. Apparently it should have arrived earlier on Wednesday but an entire UPS shipment, including my phone, was held for half a day by customs.

I'm sorry cIIL, but you will have to do without the phone for a few days. I'm told you can call Apple and request a loaner phone, but there may be a fee for that. Or you could look into having your calls forwarded to your home or work number while it's gone.

Thanks for your comments, Mirm83.  My problem occurred again last night, so yes . . . . I guess I'll try anything.  This isn't the most encouraging thread though, you know?  Is it software, hardware, some fixes work for awhile then not.  Crazy making!!!  The problem doesn't always replicate in the store (which I am very far from) . . . . and phone support I suppose I'll try again.  But is there a way to do this online without the complete loss of my phone for awhile?  The replacement procedure you mention seems to require I give up the unit and then wait an unspecified time??  This won't work for me.   I do love the phone itself --  just wish it wasn't so wonky and difficult to replace.

Thanks for the encouraging info, Mirm83.  I suppose I'll give it a try.  I presume your replacement phone no longer has the problem (i.e., unlike Switzma above)?????

It's no problem at all, I'm happy to help. My replacement phone is working perfectly, so far. I had prepared myself for the possibility that the new phone would have the same problem. If it had, I would have immediately placed another replacement request. And tried to score free stuff through Applecare for the hassle.

I forgot to mention. Call your provider and let them know that you are sending out your phone, assuming that you got it from them. Ask them to to take money off of your next bill.

Same here! The clown I got told me that it's a sofrware issue too and that I'd have to start from scratch coz my backup will cause the problem to occur again if I loaded it back up. I called bullsh*t and asked him to wipe it and show me it works after doing so.

Of course it didn't. He ended up replacing my less than 3 month old 4S.

I ripped the tech who helped me on the post-service feedback and I the manager of the Apple store phoned me personally to apologize about the incident and that they would take necessary actions to prevent this from happening again.

Got my 4S less than 2 months ago and facing OCNA from day one.

Let's say I can live with it, knowing that 5.1 will solve the issue.

But can't live with BT issue. When dial or answer a call from my car the phone switch to speaker and no way to manage it or going back to BT device.

    Are these 2 issues connected?

Is OCNA an hardware related issue too?

I can ask for a replacement phone but I'm afraid will got a refurbished phone with same issue.

    Any help?

Well - FYI, I gave up and sent my phone back to Apple repair yesterday - it arrives with them today - am checking on 'repair' as the e-reports come in.  This is all a leap of faith.  But I did experience rekindled hope as I sent the phone off prepaid at UPS.  Basically sick of dealing with the issue.  I'll update my experience here.  Amazing how this experience has undermined faith in Apple for some of us that we are even leery of sending the phone back. Hopefully they are on top of it by now.

Nothing to report, just throwing in my two cents and upping the messages so Apple pays attention.

Got the 4S in late October 2011. The OCNA problem was not too bad at first but is getting worse and worse. At this point, mid-February 2012 and a bit over three months of owning the phone, at least 60% of my outgoing calls have no audio. I'll have to redail 4, 5 times to get audio. (Usually, the person I'm calling will get concerned at the numerous calls and call ME, at which point I can hear them.)

Reports on the inet seem to indicate that the ios upgrade will NOT address the problem. Cross your fingers, folks. Otherwise it's back to the shop with this iphone.

At first I was told it was a software issue too, but upon wiping the phone several  times, OCNA still happens. I got a "replacement" phone. Not sure if it was refurbished. It was in one of the drawers behind the genius bar and came in a black plastic box and not your standard brandnew iPhone retail box.

Anyway, my advice would be to get a replacement one. Refurb or not as long as it works, right?

Dropped phone prepaid to Apple at UPS Store yesterday at noon.  Today 24 hrs later have notice that 'diagnosis completed' and 'product replacement pending shipment'.  I'm actually starting to feel excited again!  Will keep y'all up on this grand experiment!

I had this problem too.  When making a call using apple ear buds, iPhone 4S, speaker phone would activate itself and disabling it, did not switch the audio to the ear buds.

I tried asking Siri to make a call, without using the ear buds, the call connect, I hung up.  The ear buds worked fine when I plugged them it and made a call.

This iPhone 4S is a replacement for a phone whose ear speaker stopped working at full volume.

    I'm having this problem too - iPhone 3GS, 32gb, OS 5.01

Receives calls via Bluetooth car kit 100% fine, but when I call out there's no audio on my end or the receiver's until I pick up the phone and toggle the audio source to speaker and back to the Bluetooth kit.

some people say that iOS 5.1 fixes the issue with OCNA, others claim it is a hardware bug..still disputable which is it...if it is hardware, then we all should merely replace our phones, if not fingers crossed that new iOS update will help us.
