Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Had the same problem - OCNA - and a possible solution. Try turning off the setting "General/Siri/Raise to Speak".  When it's on, the system automatically routes the audio to the loud speaker so that Siri can talk to you. If "Raise to Speak" is on and you call a phone number, it appears that the same thing happens.  The system sends the audio signal to the loud speaker as you bring the phone to your ear. This would explain why pressing the speaker icon would return the audio to the ear speaker.  I turned off this setting and so far the phone has worked reliably. (32Gb 4S)

Except that now you lose features as intended! Here's what finally got me . . . . NO MORE TRICKERY!  Just give me the phone with the features I paid for!  And Apple did just that (via replacement).  My iCloud backup went right to my new phone, and it is indistinguishable from my prior one - except it works as intended.  Software fix (iOS 5.1) for a hardware problem - not for me thanks. (I'm running the same software as my defunct phone). Goodbye OCNA, thank you Apple for standing behind your (complex) product.

    My question for everyone.

Is you sim card an ORIGINAL MICRO SIM from the carrier, or is it a standard sim that was CUT into a micro sim?

I have also had the same issue for quite a few weeks now. Initially the 4s worked just fine but then on some random outgoing calls (I would say about 40%) you get no audio.

I have called Apple Support and they are replacing the phone. They mentioned it could be a problem with the antenna, but I find this difficult to understand...

Anyway, this will cost me some money because, since I just cannot survive without the phone that I use quite a lot for business I have asked for a replacement to be sent before I return the damaged terminal.

I do hope that the replacement will work fine. I had a 3Gs before and never experienced a hardware issue.

Here's to hoping that ios 5.1 fixes the problem, as it has for many on this thread who have tested beta versions. I'm hoping it will be out in 1-2 weeks, as I've been holding on for quite a while. The speaker phone toggle workaround, while irritating, has consistently worked for me. Re: ios 5.1, I have no problem with a software patch, as long as it works. For those who feel otherwise, replacing the phone is the right option, but it is quite apparent that this in no way assures a fix, given the many folks who have had serial OCNA issues. The lesson for me is not to rush to switch to the new device, until it's been fully debugged. On the whole however, even with this problem, the 4S is much more usable that my 3GS (battery life, speed, camera, screen resolution, memory capacity...etc.) however that probably won't be the case the next time around and i'm going to hold off until the dust settles

Seems as though this has been a snowballing issue since October, 2011. As I live in South Africa, and iPhone comes through carrier (Vodacom), and there are only authorized distributors of Apple products, I don't have the option of just popping into the Apple store. When visiting Vodacom, their only remedy is to ship my phone to Johannesburg for evaluation, advise that I will lose data and apps, and it will take 2 business weeks. Sorry, that's not gonna happen with my new iPhone 4s!

This seems so unlike Apple. From what I read, Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge the fault even exists! What's the deal?

Got the phone replaced today at the apple store. It was harder than i expected because they first wanted to reproduce the problem and then wanted to apply software updates and retest and still see the problem. Luckily (?) the phone had the OCNA issue on all of their tests, both before and after their software update. Good news is that we walked into the store with a phone with the OCNA problem, and walked out with a new replacement. Issue has not re-occured on new phone.

Good for all you guys out there who can swap iphones in apple stores. What about for countries who dont have apple stores??? Carrier dont care about it . They dont swap , you will have to wait for 3-4 weeks, and even than you cant be sure that iphone is working as should be. I am saying this as i can see a lot of people need to swap 2-3 phoes to get the right one. So i am very angry and APPLE is plaing games with us , this is such a shame for this big company. Not a one word about this problem which is obvious. They are not aware of this?? No my friends that is story for kids.. even they wouldnt belive . I am deeply disapointed at this iphone. Very

I am nowhere near an Apple Store and transacted the replacement 100% over the Apple website support page under product replacement/repair.  If it's under warranty they will/should replace it.  It may take a few days turnaround but they do hustle on it.  Replacement phone working beautifully.  Out of 40 million or so iphones produced in the last few months we are probably in the minority . . . . an official announcement is likely not forthcoming under such conditions.

    Same problem here.

    iPhone 4S, 64GB

Make a call with or without my headphones in and it automatically goes to speaker, no audio out, just audio in.

I haven't been able to try the "hit mute button twice" trick but I will.

    My problem:
Bought this iPhone through Best Buy + service/support through Best Buy (HUGE Mistake).  They will give me a loaner phone for the time it takes to assess and fix the problem (they estimate 3-5 business days) but 1) it won't be an iPhone and 2) who can be without their primary device for 3-5 business days??  It's my home phone, guys.  Fail.

    My solution:

Purchase an additional support plan through Apple, schedule an appt at the store (5 mins from me) and take it in and (hopefully) walk out with a new, improved iPhone 4S.

Just as an update to my last post - in South Africa there are no true Apple stores, only authorized distributors who do not offer iphone exchanges. The cell carrier from whom one purchases an iphone (Vodacom) phoned me this morning to offer to do me a "favor", that if I'd book my phone in to send to Johannesburg, they'd be sure to get it back to me in 5 business days instead of the customary 10 - such a deal! Advised I'd still lose my data and apps. Now there is an argument to be made about Vodacom's abysmal Customer Service, but this is still an Apple product failure. Apple needs to step up everywhere their product is sold and stand behind it. I am unable to see where they are doing that in a reasonable manner apart from walk in access to an Apple store.

Oh, and by the way, it took me several attempts to sign in to the Apple support site as Safari repeatedly sad "Safari cannot find the server" - but that's another story of Apple failing to provide a suitable fix for another product.

The affection that I have for all things Apple is fast eroding - I really do hope that they step up!
