Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

OK - a few points of info. Firstly, for AppleFanFromTexas -- if it is within 30 days of purchase AND they have it in stock (in my case, they don't have it and they won't 'special order' for an exchange) they are supposed to do the exchanges for apple.com purchases IN the stores. That was verified by the manager of the St. Louis Galleria store.

Unfortunately, if you bought on launch day, your time is running out. And since I have a 64GB model in white (apparently the one they generally don't have in stock) I guess I'm going to have to go through apple.com to do the exchange.

For those not familiar - it is a RIDICULOUS way to do things:

1st option - Box up the phone and send it to them and wait 3 to 4 weeks - and they won't guarantee and exchange, they may just "repair it" and send it back.

2nd option - Let them put an $850 hold charge on your credit card while they a.) send you a 'loaner' phone, b.) you box up and send in your phone, c.) they either repair or exchange at their pleasure and d.) you have to send back the 'loaner' phone and THEN once they receive it, they take the charge off your credit card.

Didn't I just read in this book about Steve Jobs how he liked everything simple???? I would think that Steve would have called this "sh*t"...

I'm going to call the rest of this week because they claim they get shipments in every single day. If they don't have it in by Friday, I guess I'll call back applecare and do it the hard way. I'm not sure what else to do at this point.

Thanks AppleFanFromTexas for giving a heads-up to what could have been a very ugly encounter in the Apple store...

    Hello , I have a new iPhone 4S ( get it 4 days ago ).

by outgoing cals , I dont have sound on the iPhone after connection is activ ( timer count ).

I show this to vendor employé and he said me that the iPhone must go to the after sales service from Apple.

The return delay is minimal 3 weeks and no replacement phone is proposed until it come back.

It is a pitty, for a brand new iPhone who dont work correctly, and where it is know that itt is a manufacter problem, an immediate exchange should be made.

I decided to try another replacement since they wouldn't refund in the store.

One more here in Finland with the same problem. iPhone 4S 16 GB white. Sometimes happens more often and sometimes seems to work just fine. Cycling the speaker fixes the problem for me also.

This is kinda like the proximity sensor problem with the iP4: Some people had it more often, some didn't. Some people had it fixed by a software update sooner or later and some didn't.

I think this is a wide spread problem & it's among all carriers.

I am having the same issue here in Germany on T-Mobile with my white 16GB iPhone4S, esp. when I am outside my home country.  In addition I am also facing the 'phantom user' phenomenon where my battery is empty after one day, even when the phone is barely used and mostly in stand-by mode.

I was told by Apple that my phone will need to be replaced, which I am doing and I am also getting a new micro-sim.  Let's see if the replacement phone will be having the same issues or not.

I purchased from AT&T a 16GB white iPhone 4S on release date and experience the same issue described here. On a majority of my outbound calls the party called cannot hear me. I do not use any accessory, just the phone itself. BT disabled. Left feedback for Apple today. Still within 30 days, hoping for some acknowledgment from them that its a software bug.

I just got my Iphone 4S 16GB through TELUS and I have also come across the "no audio when making a call"  Although pressing Speaker ON and OFF allows me to hear through the earpiece, it is getting quite tiresome.  I have done a New Phone Restore and the such to no avail.  Finally got through to a TELUS representative and he assured me that it is a software issue.  With all the phonecalls they have been getting, they have been told that this issue will be fixed with the next IOS update.  Along with the battery issue, the audio issue should also be fixed.  So I guess all we can do is wait.    But at least I finally got a clear answer from someone.  The guys from the Apple Store say they are not aware to the issue.

Just finished talking with Apple Care, they concluded it is a hardware issue and set me up for a replacement at the Apple Store. I guess they made a note on my serial number and the "genius bar" should find that. Let's see what happens with phone #4.

Same issue here.  I got mine on release day at AT&T in the U.S.  White, 16GB.  Everytime I call my wife there is no ring and I can not hear anything accept my own voice in the speaker if I say something.  If I look at the connection it looks like the call is connected.  If I hang up and try it again right away then it works.  So everytime I have to call my wife I have to do it twice.  I have an apoointment scheduled for Friday at the Apple store so we will see what they say but from the looks of this thread I will need it replaced.

I am relieved to see that Apple has apparently acknowledged a problem, at last!!  Perhaps at least now the process of "dealing" with it will be easier?  I called Apple store today explaining all my attempts through Apple store, replacement phone, Apple Care, restore to new phone, AT & T, new sim card...  They told me they never heard of it.  I have an appt. at the store Monday night and requested them to investigate further cause I am going to lose it if they tell me they have never heard of it again!!!!

Michaelb1234 - do yourself a favor and call the Apple Store first. I was told the same thing by AppleCare and when I phoned the store they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. Might save you a trip to get it straightened out ahead of time.

Thanks for the advice Ted, I live 5 minutes walk from the Apple store so it's not a biggie, but I imagine it must be frustrating for people who have to drive to an apple store or exchange their products by mail, especially when apple treats you like a stupid kid and avoids taking responsibility for a product you've paid a lot of money for.

TELUS in Canada said that it has been an issue in North America.  The problem will be fixed with the next software update.
