Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

So far I had Apple to exchange the phone for a new one. Let's see how this new phone works out.

5.1 Upgrade didnt do the trick.

I just got my 4S in today and I have no audio at all during a call except when on speaker. Same with vm but all other apps run fine.

I bought a factory unlocked iPhones 4S 32GB yesterday and can't hear any audio in outgoing calls. turn on and off the mute switch doesn't solve the problem. Nothing solves the problem. I have made about ten calls on it so far and could hear audio on only two of them.

Ok so talked with apple. Guy was awesome. Seems to be a short in the circuit board and they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix for it. So bad batch of hardware and whala, no sound, new phone coming in from AT&T warranty dept since it was a warranty phone!!

I purchased a new 4s yesterday. I thought I had an issue with my phone (low sound) while on calls and listening to VM.  Come to find out there is no issue.  I removed the protective film that came with the phone then bang, loud and crystal clear.

I wanted to keep the plastic on my phone until I could get a case or bumper.  I feel so embrassed.

JC83- the funny thing about this is you posted about it lol but I did the same thing, until I got a case I was trying to leave the plastic on it but did check on this first!! I'm glad you got your phone working. I'm awaiting mine!!

Yeah. kinda fix it immediately after i posted the problem. i just cut a small hole through the plastic case. i guess it was the two calls with clear audio that fooled me.

I wish that was my problem but a lot of the 4s have a circuit board problem so you never know!! Hopefully apple said they will have a fix soon but there are a lot of phones out there that are going to have to be replaced because of a bad batch of hardware

It seems I am not alone with this very annoying problem with my iPhone 4S.  I have attempted all the fixes suggested to no avail and the upgrade made no differences. The problem continues and it is driving me MAD. My family understand and just keep on calling, but I can't give strangers my mobile number as it is so unreliable. I have had my phone since it was released.  It is great for everything else, hopeless for making phone calls.

Please APPLE fix this problem now.

So the 5.1 upgrade did not do any difference?

If so then I think the only solution is getting your phone replaced. Myself and many others got the problem fixed by upgrading to 5.1.

The rest got their phone replaced.

I would think it's highly unlikely Apple will do anything else about the problem since they obivously has a software fix that works for a lot of people. And they will never make a recall or public acknowledgement.

So go to your closest Apple store or in case you don't have anyone, contact the operator which you bought the phone through and get them to do it for you.

It appeared to work for a few days, then it returned to "normal".  Ok, I will go and visit Apple and see what they have to say and hopefully they will replace it with one that works. We have three 4S's and only mine plays up.

    Thanks

I don't have this issue when my 4S was on iOS 5.01.  But after upgrading to iOS5.1, and in last two days, I got this call no sound issue twice. Both incoming and outgoing calls has no sound and call timer is ticking.  Back to normal after a reboot.

Same as above except reboot did not help.  Trying factory restore as I type.  Very frustrating since I use my phone for work and the phone feature should be the must polished feature on an I"phone"......? Going back to droid if this doesn't get resolved.  This is the reason I switched to the iphone......rant over.
