Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

2640 replies on this thread.. I went Android instead.  Bought a Nexus 4.  Love it so far.  Plus the mic works and people can hear me, gotta love that in a phone

iphone 5 user since they came out. A week ago, I could no longer hear the caller well. Sounds like volume is all the way down when in fact it is all the way up. Tehre is a tiny little voice there, but impossible to hear with *any* background noise. Couple that with my mic problem that happened the same day - Mic works fine for google and voice recorder and phone. Mic only works intermittently with Siri. I can speak three sentences to Siri, and maybe half of the first one is heard perfectly. The rest is totally ignored. The "vu" purple meter inside the mic doesn't bounce around while I talk.

Everything works just fine with a bt or plug-in headset.

Genius appointment on Friday. Pain to get there, but I see no other option.

    Hello,

So what kind of problem did you had? Caller didn't hear you or you cannot hear the other person?

    Did you find a solution?

I have a similiar issue. With 2 lines of GSM signal, I can perfectly hear the other person, but that person hear me very bad or not at all.

    Thx.

For my iPhone 5 (1 out of 10 outgoing calls no sound came out of the speaker, while the people I called could perfectly hear me) I tried several versions of iOS6, complete reinstallations etc...

    Nothing helped...

Yesterday Apple replaced the phone... Keeping my fingers crossed now...

    So far so good...

Alas... New iPhone 5 has the same problem my original '5' had...

Apple tech now suggests I 'install it as a new Phone'...

May have to do with one of my settings...(????)

So far I did not discover a 'mute audio on outgoing calls every now an then' though...

I wonder if this problem will ever be pinpointed and solved...

same thing happened to me, seems to work fine now after a simple restart.. have you tried restarting your iphone? and if so, did it solve the problem for you as well?

My problems were an odd mix:

I could not hear a caller (I could, but VERY faint with volume at 100%)

    Caller could hear me perfectly.

Siri could either hear nothing, or alternatively would hear a few words, and miss the rest of the sentence completely.

Voice recorder would sometimes hear me, and other times not hear me at all.

    Google voice worked fine.

It was all quite frustrating. Took it into Apple. They tested it and could not figure out what was wrong (of course asked me if I'd dropped it in the toilet). Suggested a replacement.... and yay! It worked. The new phone has been doing fine since the end of Feb.

I have been reinstalling and restarting dozens of times...

The only I did not do so far is reinstall as a new iPhone and start using it...

I need my stuff on it, otherwise I could have bought a $15 Nokia...

I've seen more and more people experience the same problem on new iPhones, so I bet it must be a software-problem. I will switch beween loudspeaker and earpiece the next time it happens... Will see if that helps...

Yeah, same thing happened to me. I couldn't hear the caller through the receiver, but when I put it on speaker. It was very faint(volume was up 100% and on ringer). As a matter of fact, I didn't even hear it ring when I placed the call. It just connected moments later.

Anyways, so far so good today. Hope it's a software problem and not hardware. I really don't want to get another replacement phone. If restart or setup as new phone fails. Just take it to the apple store and get a replacement.

When I get phone calls 50% of the time the caller can't hear my voice at all on both of our iphone 5's... that was on ios 6.1.3.  Yesterday I had a genius appointment they gave us new two new phones with ios 6.1.2. And I have the same problem.  Called the phone ten times and I coun't and it only work 4 out of 10 tries.  First I thought that it was the ios update, but now with the older version and same problem... I wonder if the problem started with ios 6.1.2.... I'm not sure what to do at this point!

    Hi,

The caller doesn't hear you at all or very bad, with a lot of interruptions?

How strong is the signal when you have this problem? Did this problem apear in more places or just in one place(e.q. your home)?

The phone is on 2G or 3G when you make the calls?

Caller can't hear me at all... No sound of any kind... I can hear the caller perfectly fine... it's on 3G when I make the calls from work and home... most of the tests that I did where from home where I get 3 bars most of the time and with wifi... I tested calling the iphone from my home landline and 50% the voice failed to from iphone to landline....

Almost the same here. Caller can't hear me at all too. It seems like mute button is pressed. I can hear the caller loud and clearly.  It usually occurs when I've charged my Iphone 4 battery and I've just unplug it from the wall. Sometimes it occurs while I disconnect from bluetooth device.  I've already tried to touch on/off the speaker button, reset Iphone, and install last version (ios 6.1.3 10B329). If I immediately call by VIBER it works perfectly and sometimes the regular call works after that. But it's not a rule. Any idea?
