Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

If Apple so much as came out and said, look we're not sure if it's a hardware or software issue, but we know some people are experiancing it. If it's a software issue we will release a fix asap, if it's a hardware issue we promise brand new devices to all those affected, my patiance would miraculously extend. Apple is becoming complacent, it may take a decade but this is how Apple begins it's decline.

The most annoying thing here is that some people are being told by Apple that this is software issue, some that Apple has never heard about this problem, and some are getting new phones.

Another funny thing is that some has gotten like three faulty phones in a row...are there really so many phones with HW problems out there? The speaker itself can't be faulty because it fails to work only in the phone software. Questions, questions, questions...

Does anybody with this problem have a developer license install the 5.0.1 beta?  Did it fix the audio issue?

I will test 5.0.1 in the evening.

I can tell you something!! It's not only the 4s affected by the outgoing call no audio issue, the iPhone 4 is too!

about an hour ago a colleague told me that her iPhone 4 is making trouble on outgoing calls. I told her to bring me her iPhone and after a few calls I am sure that her phone got the same problem as mine. No audio on outgoing call, timecounter is counting and connection is established. Toogling the speaker also resolved her problem during call. She got her phone since 3 months and the problems appeared a few days after installing iOs5. I am very sure that this is the same bug we are talking about.

I have a black 32GB 4s in Toronto Canada with Rogers. I've had the same issues since I got the phone (sometimes there is no audio on outgoing calls, but a quick switch to speaker fixes it every time). Last night I tried the DFU restore and setup as a new phone.  It did not fix the issue.  Pretty sure that Siri is not the culprit, as I still haven't enabled Siri since the restore, and am still having the problem.  I also noticed when testing that when the issue is occuring (no audio for outgoing calls) the mute button will not stay highlighted, but immediately after switching to speaker and back, the mute button functions as normal.

My wife's white 16GB has no issues.

Hoping 5.0.1 somehow  helps, but this seems like hardware.

I just restored my old iP 4 from the 4S backup and everything is working like a charm. Guess, I'll be using this for a while and follow the situation before taking the 4S to service. Could it be that Apple is using some components from different manufacturers and only certain brands are susceptible to this bug in the software?

I agree eberl... it's most likely software - and most likely a certain combination of settings. I did another device level restore last night - JUST to make sure before I go to Apple on Saturday that I had done everything possible. Did the restore, waited through the backup from iCloud, waited through the download of all of my apps... picked it up and called my house. FIRST CALL it exhibited the problem.

I hope it's a bug, I really don't want to go through the lengthy replacement arrangements they are proposing... ugh...

I have a black, 32GB 4S that I pre-ordered through AT&T and I posted this on another thread discussing the same outgoing call/mic issues:

I have been having the same issues as most of you.  When in my car, I could make one completed outgoing call using bluetooth (over the car speakers), but all subsequent calls would go to the phone speaker instead.  And turning the speaker button on and off didn't work for me.  Nothing I tried worked.  With regular outgoing calls, I again could only make one outgoing call at most, and all the rest would result in the people on the other end not hearing me or I couldn't hear them.  Very frustrating!  My phone would only work as a phone about 15% of the time.  I called Apple and made an appointment at the local "Genius Bar" (I live in St. Louis) after getting nowhere with the person on the phone, who denied any known issues and insisted that I do all the testing I had already done over again on the phone with her (restore, etc.).  I had read all the previous posts and wanted to get a new replacement ASAP, before they started giving out refurbished replacements.  At my appointment, they were able to reproduce the issue on the second connected/completed outgoing call, even after another restore, so they gave me a new one, no charge.  I was there less than 20 minutes and two more people came in with the exact same issue!!  I was sure to point that out to the "Genius" I was working with, who had also originally denied that there was a known problem.  My new phone works great so far (27 hours)!  Tested it there in the store before I left with it.  Good luck to everyone still fighting with these issues!!  Go get your new phone before all of the phones already turned in start getting refurbished and distributed as replacements.

Apple is so trying to swipe this issue under the carpet I wouldn't be surprised if it's fixed by 5.0.1 without them even mentioning they put a fix.

How is it possible that none of the blogs are talking about this, on this support forum it's bigger than the battery issue (a legitimate issue as well but a bone thrown to the media, a "here discuss something".) It's clear that Apple dictates what the blogs are allowed to talk about if they want to maintain their good relations with Apple. And it's not just the tech blogs, it's all of mainstream media, because of how important the iOS platform has become in publishing (and how threatened newspapers are feeling these days) Apple has come to have such a strong grip even over the NYT, they're holding everyone in the BALLS!

If this issue came out in the mainstream media it would such a total embarrasement to Apple, people would really think twice before buying the new 4S, everything makes sense.

Join the Facebook community, lets expose Apple for what it is! I say OCCUPY APPLE!!

I'm also wondering why there are no blogs about this issue. I told the austrian blog benm.at about this problem, but no response till now. Seems that we all are a little bit crazy talking about **** like that.

C'mon apple, throw us a frickin bone here!

UPDATE - it's amazing to me that your whole experience with a company is predicated on the interactions you have with the individuals who represent their company and that they are allowed to represent the company in such wide and varying ways.

So after calling the two St. Louis Apple Stores and finding that they didn't have and were unlikely to have the 64GB version of the iPhone in white in time to replace it in the 30 day window, I went back to AppleCare (call number 5), where I got what sounded like a young man who looked at my file and said, "Wow, this has gone on too long. Let me set up a replacement."

So I said, "Well, I don't think it's right to pay $30 to replace a phone that was bad in the first place - and what if THIS phone doesn't work? Another $30????"

His reply, " No, no, there's no charge. We'll have to put a hold on your credit card until the old phone arrives, but we'll ship the phone out express at no charge."  Wow, so why didn't they just offer this in the first place. I had TWO other company representatives tell me that they would send me a 'loaner' phone, then I had to send back my phone and THEN they sent back either my phone "repaired" or a new phone at their discretion AND THEN I still had to send back the so-called, loaner phone before the credit would be restored to my credit card.

This guy tells me, "We will be sending you a new phone, which is yours to keep and then you just send back the old phone - as soon as we receive it, we'll take the transaction hold off the credit card." Which at least MAKES SENSE!

Thank you Apple, for having at least ONE (out of 5) employees who seems to get it!

Still don't know if this will solve it, but I'm certainly happy that my issue has been heard and an attempt to resolve it is being made. In the end, this phone may have the exact same issue, who knows - if it's software related, that's very likely. But at least I feel like Apple is trying to do SOMEthing. Good luck to the rest of you - I'll check back as soon as I receive it (he thought as early as tomorrow [wow - they aren't kidding about "express shipping"]) and let you know if it resolves the problem. I plan to set it up as a new phone and sync it from scratch NOT from my backup, so it will be like starting from square one. Let's see.

    Crossing my fingers.

I'm just reading this article on CNN regarding the battery issue http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/01/tech/mobile/iphone-4s-battery-life/index.html

    A quote from the article:

"A post on the Apple support forums, begun on October 15 to discuss battery problems, was still active Tuesday -- two weeks and 185 pages worth of comments later."

So it seems even CNN knows how to find the Apple Support Forum, what they are allowed to write about is a different matter. This topic tops the battery issue yet received ZERO attention in the media. You do the math.

We are Verizon customers and just switched from two Droid phones because Droid had too many problems.  We have had our phones for three days.  I have the 16GB black 4s  and I purchased the 32GB white 4s for my wife.  We don’t use head phones or Bluetooth devices; just the phone as it came from Apple via Verizon.  My wife will call me and on her phone, she won’t hear any audio but my phone will ring and I answer it.  She can’t hear me and I can’t hear her but the timer is showing on both phones as if we are connected.  It happens about 25% of the calls she makes.  She will then call me back and it works fine.
