Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    +1

Same here. iPhone 4S 32GB, in France with SFR. 5% to 15% of my outgoing calls are silent.

I've never experienced that with my iPhone 4 before... Very frustrating.

I've been having the same issues since day 1. iPhone 4S 16GB white on Rogers (clean restore starting from scratch, didn't use backups). Probably affects about 1/3 of my calls. Toggling speakerphone icon seems to help.

bigwhite2K9 -- I did the express replacement as well. It's an $850 transaction hold (in other words, $850 of your credit limit is temporarily unavailable - they don't actually charge your card.) - when they receive the old phone they'll take it off. Presumably shouldn't take more than a week total and they should give you a repair ID number to track progress with. I had a confirmation of shipping on the phone within an hour of talking to AppleCare - so, so far the process is moving rapidly for me.

Dr. B did you have to pay the $850 hold because I'm not waiting for a software fix Now.  The Macrumors report said the 5.0.1 beta did not fix the audio issue So I guess I will do a advance replacement swap.  But with no Apple Store within 400 miles they want to hold $850 on my credit card till they get the phone back.  I guess I'll have to pay it.  Since I sold my iphone 4 to get this phone I wouldn't have a phone for 3-5 days if I sent my phone in first.

Unfortunately...yes. I only had to replace one of my phones, so I only had to put a $750 hold on my credit card. I sent off the deffective iPhone 4s yesterday. The interesting part is that if they recieve my phone and decide that it's not defective they will charge me......bunch of bull!!!

I understand that hardware/software may have problems. However, they should fess up to it and not act like "my" phone was the only one in the world with this problem..... I specifically asked them if they had any complaints about all of this....all they said: No.

I can't stand it when someone lies to me!!!

+4 here.  My wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and I all picked up 16GB iPhone4Ses on Verizon.  Seems to be anywhere between 1 in 10 and 1 in 4 outgoing calls appear to connect but yet there's no audio.  Call timer starts running, but nothing can be heard.  I just saw about trying to toggle speakerphone on and off - will try this the next time it happens. I have also called both Verizon and Apple to let them know of the issue.

If Apple's patch deployment works anything like my company's, v5.0.1 is full of high-priority fixes for stuff Apple already knew about when v5.0 was released. Other problems with known workarounds (just keep redialing) can wait.... Early adopters pay their money and take their chances.

I'm going to setup the return today.  I wouldn't have any problem keeping the phone if Apple said we know there is a problem and we are working on a update that will take care of it.  I would wait for the update but since they aren't owning up to the problem I'll go ahead and return mine.  I bought 2 64GB on launch day & my girlfriends phone is working fine.  But I'm convinced this could be fixed with a software update if Apple would put a team on it.

The problem was when re-dialing...the  person's phone on the other line rang....but could not hear anything. So I would get a call back saying " why do you keep calling me and not saying anything". When in fact I never knew if the line ever connected or not......

Everytime I make a call I always hit the speaker button and wait for it to ring once then switch to the earpiece.   This works 100% of the time for me.  But I should have to do this for a $800 phone.

Add me to the long list.  Many of my initial call attempts are silent.  This is an iPhone 4S 32GB on AT&T.  Did not have this problem with the iPhone 4 or previous iPhones.

I've always thought this was a carrier side problem.  I've had this problem on the iPhone 4 32GB AT&T, and a ton of Sprint phones including Sanyo M1 flip phone, Samsung Ace, Palm Centro, Palm Treo Pro, HTC Touch, and Blackbary Curve 8300.

Hooray Michaelb.  Maybe now we can see some changes.  Looks like you also got allot more consumers reporting to this disscussion.  Love it.  Apple, it is time to do the right thing, treat your customers with some respect and admit the problem -.  Shame on you for allowing people to think they were "alone"!!!!!!!!!

Ooh, only another 70 pages of complaints to go to reach the number on the last hardware issue I had that Apple ignored: https://discussions.apple.com/message/8538912#8538912
