Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

+1 for this issue on iPhone 4S, Australia, with Vodafone.

About 1-2 calls in 10 have no audio, starting with no dial tone before the call even connects. I found that toggling the speaker seems to fix it at least once or twice. But I keep forgetting to try it to see if it's a consistent fix.

Thanks for the post.  I am in the same boat.  I tried powering power, hard reset and it seemed to work only to show up later when I initiated an outgoing call.  Also noticed the echo and static originally, but have not heard since.  Turned General/Siri/Raise to Speak-Off and cleared open apps.  Seems to have helped a little along with power down a couple of times each week.

Just got back from TELUS in Winnipeg and they replaced my Iphone 4S 16 GB.  They said that they have had about 10 people who have come in with the same issue of "no audio during outgoing calls." They exchanged it for a new IPhone and so far so good.  It works perfectly with my last 20 calls today.

Same problem 64 GB 4S in uk. Unlocked handset from apple running on o2 network. The other day it would take me 2 or 3 calls to get through every time. It's been on and off ever since. When I finally get through the person says that they couldn't hear anything, and neither could I.

Only outgoing calls seem to be affected. Becoming a real pain in the arse

My wife has been fussing about this ever since she got her 4s and I told her it was just AT&T's network.  We're going to the Apple store tomorrow.  Hopefully the mainstream news will pick this up and put some pressure on Apple to fix this ASAP!

Ok, so I had my iPhone 4S replaced today at the Apple Store. SO FAR so good as far as the outgoing call no audio issue, however, the new device is suffering from screen tint and static. This is my 4th iPhone 4S, Apple simply can't get it right. This one is also definitely going back to the store. The screen tint is something I think Apple can get away with, but static and outgoing call no audio is not something people will accept. If my new device is indeed free of the outgoing call no audio issue, this points at a hardware problem. I wonder how profitable the iPhone 4S can be for Apple compared to past devices when they have to keep replacing it.

I had the exact same problem with my ATT 4S.

I took my phone to the Apple store where a BAD SIM CARD READER was diagnosed.

Ten minutes later I walked out with a new phone and (so far) no more problem with outgoing calls.

Yes, my daughter and I are both having the exact same problem.  I got my phone in OKC she got hers in Jersey.  My wife and my business partner got one each and have had no problems.  My frequency of muted calls is about the same as you have stated.  Happens whether or not synced to my car or free phone.  We both identified that switching to speaker and then back seemed to work sometimes.  I have had it occur both with outgoing and incoming calls unlike other posts.  Not really associated with bluetooth usage.  hope someone comes up with a fix soon.

Ok, so I'm not reading all 24 pages of this discussion so I don't know if anyone else has proposed this tactic to fix the no audio issue or even if this could be categorized as a fix (temporary) to this issue.  I too have noticed that when I make a call there is no outgoing audio.  I believe strongly that this is a software issue obviously, either on Apple's end or AT&T's.  I have noticed that if you make a call and immediately place the phone to your ear there is no audio and I have also noticed that if I place a call and immediately hit speakerphone or the keypad buttons that this also results in no audio as in ringback or of any audio really.  Even though this seems beyond trivial and easy to do, the easiest method I have discovered that fixes it is to place a  call and do not immediately put the phone to your ear.  If you wait and watch the screen for the call timer to appear and start counting for a second or two and then place the phone to your ear to listen to the call that it will connect with no problem.  You can then toggle between the keypad or speakerphone options as normal with no problem or resume to talking on the phone as with any regular call with the phone to your ear, or at least I have experienced no issues when following these steps.  I am not sure if this pertains to this thread as well but I also have noticed significant irritation with hearing the party I am talking to at times when I have the phone against my ear, can't recall if this also applies when on speakerphone but to my recollection I do not remember any such experience similar to the prior.  The main issues I have is lots of static at times and difficulty hearing the other party but that could in part be an issue with their phone or the party themselves, e.g. not speaking clearly or at a distance from the microphone, etc.  Not sure if any of this helps but did want to give my two cents if it could help with diagnosing these problems and fixing them.

    I'm facing the same issue. I've got an AT&T iphone 4s 32GB.

Toggling the speaker phone option some times does the trick... but it is still annoying...

I am a first-time iPhone user with a 4S 16 GB on Verizon. It's sooooo much better than my old not-quite-a-smartphone Blackberry Storm that it feels weird to complain about anything.

I think it's MOST of the time that I have to toggle in and out of speakerphone to hear a dialing sound of any kind. I have not yet tested whether I'd eventually have audio without the help of the speakerphone. Everything else is fine, and the workaround is easy, for the moment. We'll all get tired of doing it if Apple does not release a fix in a reasonable amount of time. I have not even tried a Bluetooth device, nor have I activated Siri.

Same issue here, 32GB on Telstra (Australia).  Seems intermittent; I can hang up from a successful call and call the same number back and have no audio.  The speakerphone toggle resolves the issue for that call.

Contacted Apple and was asked to do a restore.  Even after a restore, without loading a backup or syncing any data, the issue still occurs.  Have not even paired a BT headset and left Siri turned off, so I don't think that's the problem.  Called Apple back they agreed it's not a software issue so they're sending a new phone as an advance replacement.  Let's hope that fixes the issue.

What has happened to Apple quality control?  I've just had 3 iMac replacements due to a vibrating hard drive, now my new phone can't even reliably make calls (which somewhat diminishes its functionality).

Just an update for me, going on a week now with the replacement and not one problem with audio on outgoing calls.

Now yesterday my battery just took a dive off the cliff at the end of the day.  Not sure what the deal was there, but I think it had to do with the "cell network search" in the location settings.  I disabled that and today it's been great..  I hear they'll be fixing the battery life soon though so I'm not worried..
