Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

As I told you yesterday iOS 5.0.1 didn't solve our problem but this was obvious because it seems that Apple isn't aware of our problem right now.

Another user posted that his iPhone 4 (not 4s!!) is also affected and I got my colleagues iPhone 4 in my own hands, showing the same problem. The problems appeared after installing iOS5. This makes me believe that it could be a software issue, nevertheless other people reporting no problems with an exchanged iPhone 4s.

Maybe it's a certain combination of settings causing this problem.

Commonly I don't care about soft or hardware bugs, I accept them. But in this case you run into problems doing the primary purpose of your mobile!!

So once again Apple, please confirm that you are aware of this problem and working on it!!

Same problem here, no outgoing Audio on a Iphone 4S 64GB wit Vodafone Germany Single Card, no Multicard.
Sometimes iam calling someone, then i say who iam and the other side say "Hello, Hello ?? who is there ?" so i have to hang up and recall, sometimes when i recall there is kind of a robotic voice coming back. Sometimes while calling the Phone just quits talking from one to another second and on the display stands "Call failed" with full signal bars ... this Iphone 4S really ***** for me as i use it all day for my job.

Because i have an developer account i updated to 5.0.1 in hope that the battery will not be empty so fast but i can not see a difference, also yesterday 3 or 4 hours after the update ive got an "Sim Card failure" on the phone, iam really thinking about selling the phone, because like this its very useless.

    greets from Germany.

Actually, the problem in this thread is that you can't hear anything from your own earpiece in outgoing calls.

Remember to test your new phones thoroughly before declaring them trouble free. I managed to make 23 calls after restoring my 4S before the problem occured again. I'd probably try swapping my phone but here in Finland you can't do it directly with Apple. This means that some morons (that I can't talk to myself) will try to replicate the problem and then order a new phone from Apple...which takes ages.

I'm in the UK and have the same problems as described by everyone here.  I've tried all kinds of setting combinations and it makes no difference.  Sent away to Apple repair 3 day turnaround and they have sent back saying they could not get it to reproduce the fault and there is nothing wrong with.  Took me all of 10 minutes to get it producing the fault - IDIOTS!! Heres a copy of the letter they enclosed:

Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.

Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPHONE 4S and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested service. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality.

As part of our assessment and test procedures, your product has had the latest software and firmware updates installed. It is now being returned to you, and you should expect to receive it within two business days along with a letter that provides details about our assessment.

I'm having the same problem on my 4S/32GB. Noticed the problem just the other day. Got the phone first day out and did not notice a problem. Just the last couple of days - as stated by most ppl I'm not able to make outbound call, about 3 in 10 calls fail. Now my wife has a 3GS/16GB w/ the updated iOS and doesn't have any problems at all. So my question to Apple is it software or a hardware problem. Reading most post iPhone 4S users are having most of the problems. COME ON APPLE I'M A BIG FAN OF UR PRODUCTS - throw us a bone and recognize there is an issue here.

    Thanks, Mastiff.MDB

If your calls are actually failing, you have a different problem. In this case, the calls are connecting normally but the earpiece is not working.

Very good point, but I left out the fact that, when the call is placed and ur so post to hear the ringtone and don't. You can still hear yourself talk through the ear phone speaker. by ur theory I would assume the ear Phone speaker would not work period. Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated.

Ha! I thought I was alone in this.. and that I might be a little crazy. The issue for me always resolves by hanging up and calling again. I am on Verizon... and you're right about 1 in every 10 calls has no outbound audio... I am still waiting for the ring, look down at the handset only to find I have been "connected" for about 20 seconds already. Maddenning! I have to think that maybe this is a Verizon issue? or all carriers... I should really read the thread before asking that.. but if anyone knows please post :-)

Glad to find this thread... also to know the new 5.0.1 doesn't solve it :-( Come on Apple!

I don't have this problem and I have used my phone a lot, the thing is I mostly use bluetooth for calls, so I could very well have the issue and not know about it. I do have the crackling sound coming from near the earpiece which I think almost everyone has. You need to be in a quiet environment to hear the crackling.

I had the outgoing audio issues before I got my replacement phone, and it was actually even more problematic over bluetooth.  I could maybe make one phone call over my car's bluetooth but all subsequent to that would give me the same no audio issue or immediately go to speakerphone, no matter what button I would toggle or any other trick I could think of.  Basically, made it useless in the car.  So it sounds like you are one of the lucky ones that got a good phone from the start.  Aside from the faint crackling noise, that is.

MY SOLUTION: I had the same issue the very first day I got my white iPhone 4S.  It happened every third outgoing call or so.  My theory is this: it only happens when I use the menu of "recent calls" to find the phone number I'm looking to call, and if the number I select was from a missed/failed call.  For instance, if my boyfriend called me and I missed that call, it shows up on my "recents" as missed.  If I select that same call as a way to call him back, I don't hear the audio.  However, if I use a successful call off the "recents" menu as a way to call him back, I hear the audio.  Works every time.  My boyfriend chalked it up to a subtle software glitch.

I'm not sure if you guys are using the same method to make outgoing calls, but that's what's worked for me!

Had a new permutation of this issue this morning.  Rather than no audio, it defaulted to the speaker even though head-phone were plugged in, something like this:

    1. Pick up phone into hand in preparation for dialing

    2. Insert headphones into jack

    3. Pick number from Favorites list

    4. Call starts and the speaker button highlights blue

    5. I immediately hit the speaker button, turning it off

    6. Call can be heard ringing from speaker rather than headphones.

    7. Pulled headphones out and reinserted, which normally would usurp the sound, but it didn't - it remained on speaker.
