Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I started a post 7 days ago about this problem .I have the Bose and the Bose 2 having the same issue. I can go a day and have no problems, other days I get so frustrated I turn the ear piece off and have to reboot the phone to use the rest of my day with out the Bluetooth Bose . Very irritating  I did notice it gets worst when I pick up the call using the phone.

If I remember to get the call by clicking the ear piece I have less chance of messing the phone up.

This is an issue that should be addressed profetionals, sales people are on the phone all day while driving.

I am a heavy business user and make a terrible lot of phone calls every day. And I have found a temporary annoying solution for making phone call's with my iPhone!!!!!

    1) I call up with my bluetooth headset (Bose BT 2) switched off. In this case the phone only select the speaker in about 10% of the cases, and I am able to switch to the handset when it does.

    2) Then I turn on my Bose headset, and the audio is redirected to the headset in 3-4 seconds.

    3) When the conversation is over, I switch the headset off - so I am ready for the next outgoing call.

If the bluetooth headset is ON, when I make the call, the iPhone directs the audio to the speaker in 80% of the cases, - and I am not allowed to switch it back to handset or headset.

I have seen a little tendency to a similar behavior on my iPhone 4 - after upgrading to iOS 5, so I guess it might be a software bug. Therefore I will wait to claim my iPhone 4S replaced - until we get the iOS 5.0.1 release. I hope Apple will wake up - and fix the possible bug in the upgrade!!!!!

Same problem for me, got my iPhone 4S yesterday and I start to be very depressed.

I updated iOS5 on my iPhone 4 on 4th October. No audio problems at all. It might be a software bug but it must be related to the hardware of the 4S.....

Most dissapointing is that nobody at Apple seems to know about this issue, tried to speak to Applecare but they did not know about it and they want me to return the phone to replace it.

Have tried to restore the phone, same problem....tried all other things but nothing is working. If no audio sound appears for the call and I switch on the speaker it works fine, even when I switch the speaker off again.

Hope that they will look into it soon and would be great to be sure if it is a hardware or software problem.

I can report that after 3 iPhone 4Ss being afflicted with this problem, the 4th one which I have had for several days now seems to be fine. So my vote is for hardware problem. I suspect that a large number of the iPhones out there are suffering from this issue, I'd say more than 50%.

Sadly, after using the defective iPhone for close to 3 weeks, I am now suffering from a speaker phone toggle syndrome but I am seeing signs of a slow recovery and expect to be completely back to normal in time for the iPhone 5.

It seems to me that Apple knows this is a hardware issue, it's getting people to quietly replace their phones without acknowledging they are aware of a problem, you're always the only one on the planet with a defective phone.

Up to yesterday, I would have sworn it was a software issue with the way it switches audio output, but I've been purposely making a large amount of calls with my replacement phone, one after the other, often just calling my office and letting it pick up with voicemail. After well over 100 calls since yesterday morning using handset, speakerphone, Bluetooth - and regularly calling up Siri to ask her the time or the weather - I can report that I too am no longer having a single problem. It's either a crazy coincidence or I have to lean towards Michael's findings that it's hardware.

I'll keep checking in next week when my use will shoot up for work, but it sure seems to be solved. Those of you still having problems may wish to step up getting a replacement phone before the 30 day window shuts. Sorry to say, but I think that's the answer.

Yeah all indications now point at hardware issue. For me it was 3/4 phones that had the problem, so 75%, what is it like for other people here who finally got a working one?

What's the advantage of returning it within 30 days?  Does that guarantee you a brand new phone?  .

Somehow I am not convinced that it is a hardware problem. The speakers work and I think it might be a problem of iOS5 not being able to switch correctly between them.....but I am not an expert and it is just a guess.

I would think it could be fixed with a software update to.  Apple just needs to admit its a problem and put a software team on it and I'm sure it can be fixed.  But I'm rolling the dice tomorrow because I'm setting up a advance replacement on first thing Monday morning.

I have a feeling it is a problem involving hardware and software, where the problem could be fixed in software, but some of the phones out there are more vulnerable to it, that's why some are experiencing it more often than others and some don't experience it at all. It probably has to do with the amount of sensitivity of some sensor where there is a manufacturing variance in the sensitivity.

Had the same problems as did robed. Did a restore twice with no luck

Just brought it to 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica CA and they exchanged no questions asked

    3 outgoing calls, no problems

    Keeping my fingers crossed

It was a frustrating 3 days

Could be hardware, could be software

    Hoping for the best

    Good luck everyone

Apple has clearly shown what they think about it. They won't even acknowledge the problem. I don't believe for a second that their tech support staff and management hasn't been made aware of the issue. They know about it but they won't comment on it until it becomes so overwhelmingly a problem in the media that they can no longer pretend it doesn't exist.
