Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Molly - there is no fix right now as apple doesn't even acknowledge the issue. Thru AppleCare I restored to factory settings twice

You should ask for a new phone. I got my 2nd AT&T black 32GB yesterday and so far, every call has gone thru perfectly.

I am nervous about using my headphones tmrw, but so far so good

    Good luck

I do believe that at sone point, apple will have a software remedy for this

All, early on in some of the first postings for this issue someone mentioned that if you did a backup of your phone and then did a restore the issue would be fixed.  I did that about 5 days ago and my audio has been perfect.  I have not had any audio issues on bluetooth or on the phone itself.  I think there maybe something in the original backup from my iphone 3g that causes this issue to happen on my 4S that I restored to.  Performing that second backup from my 4s and then restoring from that 4s backup must get rid of whatever remnent was causing the issue.  Give it a shot and respond back with any success/failures.  Thanks.

wow - I did a resore twice . Also did the second backup from 4s and I still had the issues

Glad that it worked for you! Doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern. Some feel it is a hardware issue. Some feel that a software upgrade can resolve it

For some people, the restore worked. Sone people had no problem after their first exchange, while others had to return their phone 3x

I have two co-workers who have not had any problems whatsoever

Anyone in this discussion live in the Tampa, FL area?  Have you been to the Apple store Intl. Mall?

I just bought my black iPhone 4S-16GB yesterday, and I'm experiencing this problem on 100% of all outgoing phone calls. I spoke with two other friends who bought the same model 2-3 weeks ago, and they have the same problem on all outgoing calls. That looks like a 100% failure rate on my small sample!

I get this problem of audio being switched from the ear buds to the speaker phone every few calls. I thought it was a problem with the phone being in my shirt pocket and getting accidental contact swipes etc from contact with my chest as I was walking. I usually make the calls using Siri and think this is the initiator of the problem.

I live in Vancouver Canada and use Rogers with my 64Gb iPhone 4s

Forgive me if this has been mentioned before but I don't have the time to wade through 30 pages of posts!

I am having this issue (on a daily basis) here in the United Kingdom. In fact the other day I needed to contact someone urgently and found myself unable to make a successful call, despite repeated attempts, over a twenty minute period.

I am less than impressed particularly as I am also unable to use my iPhone 4S to stream music over 'Airplay', so I'm off to the Apple Store to try to get a replacement.

Apple need to get to the bottom of this very urgently.

I have the 4s 16gb and I have the same problem.  I'll make a call and more than half of my calls, the person on the other end can't hear me at all.  I can hear them, but they get nothing.  I call back seconds after they hang up and its fine usually, extrememly annoying!

Just got off the phone with apple.  The helper told me that 1/2 of all help calls are now regarding the "calling out issue".

He too told me to restore the phone, but to then set up as a new phone using my icloud back up as opposed to the itunes connected way.  He says there are database changes from the 3GS to the 4S that are causing the problem that are eliminated with the icloud set up.

    So here goes-------

Just to let you know: Booked a genius appointment, the guy had not heard of the problem but gave me a new replacement phone anyway. 3 calls in and no problems yet, will let you know once i've tested it for a few days.

I don't know which suggestions really work but, the problem doesn't happen for me when:

    1) I dial, end call, and dial again immediately

    2) I quit the Phone app and let iOS reload the app (which is annoying to keep doing)

    3) It never seems to happen on Speaker so toggling Speaker is the easiest workaround I've seen

I don't make a lot of calls but i noticed the problem immediately when moving to my 4S.

Hopefully Apple is internally aware of the problem due to direct usage and addresses it.

OK this is possibly irrelavant, but has anyone upgraded from the iPhone 4 and have this problem? I noticed someone earlier post saying someone at Apple had said it was a 3Gs to 4s database issue. I know I upgraded from the 3Gs...

But like I said, it's probably irrelavant because it has not affected some peoples replacements.
