Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I wish I could help with "the database is the issue" folks, but I set up my first IPhone 4s as a new phone and it had the issue. Went thru a restore from iCloud and it still had the issue. Got my replacement phone Friday. Set it up the same way as the first, as a new phone and hand synced my apps and music. After 2 days of purposely making a lot of outgoing calls in a variety of situations - handset, Bluetooth, speakerphone and headphones. Not a single problem so far.

Point is, it's not a database restoration issue, at least not in my case, I never restored.

As I said in an earlier post, I will continue to check back, but hardware exchange has been a fix for me so far....

OK, here's my update.  Was sure it was software, but after reading about many successful hardware replacements, I went for the replacement today. My Genius tech was great and swapped it out without question.  I joked with him that he will have to deny any knowledge or recollection of such events, however he told me he had heard others coming in with the same issue.  The service experience was great.

I have made many outbound calls via handset & BT and all OK so far.  I can hear the ringing and the person I am calling. - wow.

I also had another less consistent issue, which was the exact opposite with a call using Bluetooth, in that case I could hear the caller and they could not hear me.  Both cases had the same workaround – speaker phone toggle.  That will take a little more time to test.

I restored via iTunes and will report back. (iPhone 4S –32GB – Black -– AT&T/USA)

Oddly enough, I have two friends with white iPhones that do not have the issue – is there a connection? – not sure.  Maybe the white iPhones came from a different assembly line and therefore different parts bin. ???

As Mr. Jobs would have said, this is S#@T.  I can't think of anything more important for a phone to do then to make calls 100% of the time without failure.  I love the product and the company, but certain things to be right from the start.

    Good Luck everyone!

    Hello, New to forums so...

I'm a first time iPhone user, 4S 16GB (black) on Verizon. So far incoming calls are fine but on the majority of outgoing calls I don't hear the phone ring or detect any voice. The first time it happened I needed help with heavy packages and called my husband from the parking lot. I said, "If you can hear me please come outside." He did. We tested it out a few times, then I called some other people with the same results. They could hear me, but not the other way around. Looks like I'm taking a trip to the store. Thanks for posting your comments. BTW, my husband has the black 32GB with no problems so it does appear random. Maybe I'll try the white one just for the heck of it.

There are 18 iPhones in my family and we make calls a lot. Almost all of us have BT devices and the rest use the headset. We dont have this problem. The phones work great.

I had this same problem. Replaced the phone and no issues.

But that just breaked my conclusion earlier this was an iOS problem. Just hope apple takes notice of this.

iPhone 4S no sound when making outgoing calls. I do seem to gear the first fraction of a second, then a beep and no more sound. Headphones and also no headphones.

I powered off and powered back on, this is the only thing that would fix it for me. I wasn't sure to start with whether it was a Vodafone (vodafail) problem.

    Haven't had the problem since.

I just recieved my FOURTH Iphone 4S (16G, black) today because every call I try and make with my ear buds (the ones that came with the phone) the call switches to Speaker Phone, and the microphone mutes.  The only way to fix it is to power it off and back on.

I am at the end of my rope because all four phones have had the same issue.  I cannot spend another hour at the Genius bar.  What a waste of time!

Apple needs to release an official statement addressing this issue ASAP.

I am having exactly the same issue, but also have trouble hearing the turn by turn directions on 2 gps apps that I downloaded. I actually have to restart the phone to get the audio going. Apple is sending me a new phone, I hope I have better luck with the new phone. Btw, I would say 1 out of every 10 calls has the audio issue. Turning on and off speaker always corrects the problem.

Maybe there is a bad batch of phones. The serial number of the one I returned was starting with C39.

Hey, I've got the problem on my white 64GB 4S, and my serial number starts with C39 as well.

Can anyone else confirm / denounce that C39 phones may all have the issue, and others don't?

Unfortunately I don't know how to go about getting a replacement 4S as I'm in Melbourne and the only Apple Store here is waaaaaaaaay out in the burbs.  Who knows why they didn't put a store in the city??

I have had four Iphone 4s, all with different serial numbers (C37; two C38s; and C39).

Same problem with all of them (when I try to make a call with the head set attached the phone switches to speakerphone but the microphone is mute.)

I seriously can't go back to the Genius bar yet another time only to get another replacement that has the same problem.  I think my stragey is going to have to be to wait it out until Apple addresses the problem either with a software update or a hardware fix.  Maybe in a month or so they will be able to get me a phone that actually works?

My black iPhone 4S has a C37 serial, and has the call audio issue, as does another friend of mine.

I went to the Apple store today, and one tech said he's seen this before, and to wait for a software update.  They could exchange the phone, but the next phone could have the same problem, and then I can get into warranty issues if I try exchanging it again (??).

I have the same issue with my white 4S, first call always fails. Receiving part cannot hear me, oddly enough if I hangup and call again immediatelly, call works just fine. Also randomly when I make outgoing call, I cannot hear the opposite side, line is just dead. No dial tone, no nothing. Just timer running.
