Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I'm from Singapore. My iPhone 4S 64 black experience incoming and out going call where the other party cannot hear at time.  Signal strength looks ok, and all of us using different telco.

Wow, I was beginning to think I was the only one with this problem!  Black 4S-64G, AT&T, serial number begins with C39--not only are my outgoing calls not heard, my incoming calls are not heard either.  In addition, calls fail with full bars.

I called Apple support and was told to try a new sim card.  Did that, same problem.  I then took the phone to Apple store and they ran a diagnostic on the phone and stated that the hardware was fine.  The salesperson from whom I purchased the phone hadn't heard of the issue and surmised that it is the phone.   I've got 6 days to try some of the suggestions in this post--if they don't work--I'll be returning the phone to AT&T and wait until Apple works out the bugs.  I can't afford to have a phone on which I can't make calls.

I also had the same issue. Couldn't make calls anymore. I replaced it for a new one, for a week ago, and no problems yet. But here's my question, is it related to Siri, as some mentioned? I didn't dare to use Siri, to avoid the audio problems. Is it safe to switch the toggle?

AT&T 4s 64 GB, yep, I have a problem with calling sometimes, I hear nothing and those on other end hear nothing, seems to happen about 1 in 3 calls, also, seems to happen with the top listing (my home) in Favorites.  And, I quite often have to call a teleconference number (also in Favorites), then enter a PIN, when the second keyboard (the smaller one, not the regular large one in Phone) comes up to let me enter additional numbers, trying to enter the "1", seems to activate the proximity sensor, and either "1" won't enter and/or the display blanks.  I DID have some issues with the mute problem with the iPhone 4 and older iOS', but, not as bad.

I don't think this issue is hardware related, because I use Skype and Viber services on the phone and I don't get the same problem while making calls over these services.

Also I just noticed that I don't get this problem with contacts saved on my phone or iCloud, this issue seems to happen with contacts I have synced with Outlook / Exchange server.

    Can anyone else verify this?

Nothing to do with Siri because I have never even activated it and still have the issue.

Nope, I have it no matter who I call.

Just got my replacement phone and syncing now. Interesting to see if it has the same problem.

I also have the intermittant problem of not being able to hear the 1st outgoing call made to any given number.  If I hang up and try the call again it goes through just fine.  It's been happening off and on since I got my iPhone 4S about 2 weeks ago.  Very disappointed as my 3gs was flawless.  I'm glad I'm not having any battery related issues to add to this frustration.  Also, I'm in Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact, and there are no Genius Bars here.  So I'm left to deal with Apple directly via snail mail.  *sigh*.

I've been making most of the calls from the favorites list, I'm going to try other methods today such as direct dialing and using my main contacts list.

Ok, did over 20 test calls with my replacement and the problem is gone.

It seems that you have two options:

    1. Replace your phone and hope that you don't get another lemon.

    2. Hope that it's a conflict between the current software and some component that can come from different manufacturer depending on the phone.

Of course, you have to remember that even in this thread people have also other similar problems than just the "outgoing audio" originally posted. My problem was limited strictly to the outgoing audio and it was solved by swapping the phone.

Interesting -- I have an iPhone 4, and have started experiencing this issue after upgrading to iOS5. Never had any problems before. Bluetooth and headphone mic don't get around the issue -- clearly a software glitch!

    C'mon Apple fix this!

I setup a genius bar appointment yesterday to discuss the outgoing call audio issues (black 32GB 4s, Canada, Rogers).  I told him about the issue, mentioned this thread and was walking out of the store with a brand new phone less than five minutes later. The genius didn't even test the phone. Obviously Apple is well aware of this problem. My new phone has been problem free so far

I am on my second Iphone 4s because of this problem. I refuse to believe is a hardware issue. Apple please fix it with a software update. This is getting a little out of hand. I dont want to exchange my phone again. Very unhappy right now

    Raymon--

I have had my replacement phone for 3 days now. I've been purposefully trying everything (including Siri) to make it fail and have not had a single problem. Well over 200 outgoing calls now and using Siri several times an hour just to check it. I can't say this is a blanket answer, because I know there are others who got replacement phones and still had issues, but so far, mine is working flawlessly.

So, if it's been working fine with your phone audio, I don't think I'd be too worried about throwing Siri into the mix. It hasn't made any difference with mine.

Tested an re-tested on my iphone 4s. This issue is related to Siri. I disable Siri and everything works. Apperently Siri needs to be fixed. I enable Siri and the problem starts again. Please anyone else confirm this fixes the problem.

I don't believe that Skype nor Viber use all of the noise cancelling, ambient noise and proximity sensors that the phone app uses. So, unfortunately, it still could be either hardware or software or a combination. The way I was hearing myself when my first phone was having the problem, was as if the microphone was being fed back through the headset (which could be either a main microphone or ambient noise microphone routing issue). As I've said here, my problem has not returned with the new phone -- and the problem showed itself within hours of pulling it out of the box on my first phone.

In regards to the contacts, I never saw any difference between where I pulled the dialing from -- my contacts are outlook/exchange (work & gmail) and icloud (personal). I pulled from the contacts, favorites and in addition I manually dialed on several occasions -- all with the same 'no audio' problem at one point or another. So, at least in my experience, the contacts made no difference, I'd say you're hitting on the coincidence of the problem not occurring when you're dialing from your contacts.

This will be a heavy-phone-use work week for me, so I will continue to report in. But given the fact that there was literally ZERO difference in the way I set up the first phone (NOT from restore, but set up as new phone and hand syncing my apps and music) and this new phone -- it really only leaves the hardware or some variance in manufacture that causes a software issue.
