Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Update: It did it with Siri turned off. Another thing I did that generated the problem with Siri off is I turned Wifi OFF. Apple please do something about this.

Tested an re-tested on my iphone 4s. This issue is related to Siri. I disable Siri and everything works. Apperently Siri needs to be fixed. I enable Siri and the problem starts again. Please anyone else confirm this fixes the problem.

Kley-- thought the same thing. In fact, went to the extreme of doing a complete phone restore and then telling the phone to NOT use Siri. Went about a day without a problem and then it cropped up again. The original theory was that after using Siri, the audio output gets confused and toggling the speakerphone "unconfused" it. But I found after extensive use that this wasn't the case.

You can always leave it off and see what happens, but I think you'll find that the problem will eventually show up. That's the big problem - it's intermittant. So you change a setting and it goes away for a bit and you think you've got it figured out. If you go back through this thread, you're going to see a laundry list of fixes bandied about, but nothing worked for me until I got the replacement phone and it has worked flawlessly out of the box.

Trust me, I'm over 2 hours away from an Apple store. My initial thought was to wait for a software update and I didn't like the prospect of eating up $900 worth of 'hold' charges on my credit card.  Then I started seeing developers who had this problem testing the latest beta iOS and reporting that it wasn't fixing the problem - and I didn't want to sit on my hands and just hope it's a software fixable issue. And I'm glad I didn't. I am sadly recommending that anyone who continues to experience this problem should try new hardware - and it also appears that it's the luck of the draw. Some people such as myself have gotten lucky and had their problem resolved on the first round. Other people have gone through 3 or 4 phones before getting one without a problem.

My recommendation comes as it appears that this problem won't be acknowledged in the way that the battery issue is being taken care of -- so expecting to get a "free" replacement once you get past that 30 day intial window, it's rather unlikely.

All of that said, I was extremely pleased with my ultimate interaction with the AppleCare department (although it did take 5 calls to get past all of the resets, restores, etc.) -- and I received my replacement phone via FedEx lighting fast (it literally left within an hour of my phone call and arrived less than 24 hours later on my doorstep - amazing.) Hope others find their solutions.

    ----------------------------------------------------

UPDATE -- Saw your update -- sorry Kley, you really should see about arranging for a replacement.

The same problem has persisted since last week on my iPhone 4, NOT 4S, with both incoming and outgoing calls. People can perfectly hear me but there's no audio from the other side unless I turn on speakerphone or insert headphones. Notably I have NOT upgraded to iOS 5 yet, but I have downloaded updates to apps that support iOS 5.

I have tried most things, such as resetting, taking out the sim card and unplugging/plugging the headphone jack. There's no problem with speaker related apps, facetime or skype. The one thing I haven't done is actually upgrade to iOS 5 to solve the problem but I'm aware that most people are getting this problem AFTER updating to it and not before.

Making 20 test calls means nothing.  Atter my restore and setting up as a new phone, it took 10 days for the problem to reappear and had made perhaps 120 calls working perfectly using bluetooth and normal iphone.   What triggered it was a very long call of 50 minutes.  On mine it seems to be triggered by long calls and it was killing Siri that kicks it back to life.  Not even a reboot fixes it for me and toggling the speaker does not restore normal function either.  I have had none of the issues with me not hearing the incoming or outgoing call.  It is always that the person who called me or whom I called cannot hear me and that being in iPhone mode only.  No other issue.

This is absolutely crazy. Today I cant make any calls at all. It looks like this problem gradually started to appear and today I am experiencing the worst of it. The onluly thing I did yesterday I had a long 40 minutes call with Apple headphones on. This absolutely unacceptable Apple. If you stil want me to believe in your awesome products please fix this.

Follow up to my message at:

I am few days into my replacement 4S experience and I am a heavy user of most of the phones features. No issues so far other than one time, a person I called reported that my call has a lot of static even though I could hea them fine. I called again and it was fine. This may have not been related to the iPhone 4S.

Will keep updating every few days.

In response to the requests of some other posters, my replacement phone serial no starts with C39G.

My original phone (the one that was malfunctioning) serial was also starting with C39G.

Also please note that my replacement phone was a "black box" replacement phone with no charger and no headset and I got it at the Apple Store - Genius Bar where I was able to replicate all the problems I was having with the phone.

Phone was replaced 2 weeks after I bought the first one.

As a side note, a friend of mine who bought a Rogers 4S first day and initially never experienced any issues, started reporting ocasional issues with outgoing calls.

iPhone 4s 32k bought about 4 days ago.  I have had 3 calls on AT&T that the other party could hear but I could hear nothing.  When I said "hello, hello' into the phone, I could hear my voice echo but not the other party.  They could hear me though.  Ridiculous for a new phone.  This has happened several times in less than a week.

Also, I have all bars but very bad reception at home, even though my husband's iPhone 3S has decent reception.  I know AT&T is not the best in our area, but coupled with a microcell, wifi and full bars...why can

't others hear me on my phone??

Today it's gotten worse for me... prior to today, I could simply toggle the Speaker-phone button on and off and I could hear the person I'm calling.  Today, the phone automatically switches to Speaker-phone on every call, and when I turn it off, I hear nothing!  This is consistent, I cannot make any phone calls!  This is not a very pleasant first-time iPhone experience!

Restored my 4s without backup today. After running through setup, the first call ended up in pushing the speaker button twice to hear something @ 5.0.1 beta2.

btw there are more and more iPhone 4 user reporting the same issue after installing iOS 5, not as much as 4s users, but it seems that this problem also exists on the iPhone 4.

Lucky me, got an Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Windows Phone 7 too!! To call someone I use these devices.

In 1985 I used my first Apple PC, an Apple IIc. Since this time I'm with Apple using Macintosh Quadra's, iMac's, iPod's, iPhone's and AppleTV, but now I'm really ****** off!!

iPhone 4s, 16GB. Randomly, the person I am calling cannot hear me. Verizon says they have not heard of any issues like that but I am guessing they will now. Got a replacement phone and it does the same thing. Hoping for a fix soon.

Incoming and outgoing phone calls have NO audio. Folks can hear me when they answer their phone, or if I answer an incoming call, but I cannot hear them unless I have in a headset, a BT mic or click over to speaker. I can clearly hear Siri thu the speaker, so I know that isnt broken. I had the Apple guys at a Apple store fiddle with it, and they led me to this thread. I have turned siri off, wifi off, and have turned off all back ground apps. I uninstalled all the aps I added since the last known working phone call. no go. I have contacted Apple and am returning my 3 day old phone for repairs. If you dont want the hold on your CC you can simply wait the 7 to 10 days for them to fix, or find it defective and replace it, or you can have them put a hold on your CC and get a loan phone to use while they fix or replace yours. I did pay the $29.95 for the express service, but this is horrible that I am visually impaired, counting on siri and a $900 phone is bad on day 3. It wont sync now, it wont back up to my computer, or my icloud. Lets not even talk about how quickly the battery slides downhill on even the most basic settings. 3 hours away from home I went from 100% power to 22% power. Thats crazy! PLEASE fix this issue. This siri thing is a God send for the visually impaired, but only if it works. I will continue to come back here and see if apple is able to respond or acknowledge this is a problem.

Ted is absolutely right, keep switching for a brand new one until you get it right. This has also been my experience, this is clearly a hardware problem, I have gone through 4 phones and only got a working one on the 4th try. This means there is a huge number of defective phones on the market.

According to Apple all of this is virtual, as in this problem doesn't exist, maybe even this thread doesn't exist. The battery problem exists but the there is no microphone problem. This is day 22 of this thread, two major blogs have talked about it:

    http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/03/iphone-4s-users-complaining-of-audio-issues- no-audio-on-outgoing-calls-echoes-static/

    http://gizmodo.com/5856807/the-iphone-4s-doesnt-care-about-your-outbound-calls

Mind you even that was like pulling teeth and the media pressure clealry has not reached critical mass. Engadget, Mashable and TechCrunch have steared clear of this issue completely ignoring the fact we already have over 500 comments on this thread, more than any other topic.

Just to add to Michael's post - what I keep seeing over and over here is "Wow, I thought I was the only one" or "Wow, I thought it was just me" - which makes me think that there is a large majority of users out there that don't "know" they are having a problem. They see the symptoms, but they are equating it to a glitch - either with the phone - or more often, just thinking it was something to do with the carrier.

So we may never achieve a 'critical mass' - I just hope by people continuing to stumble on this post, we gain enough traction to at least have the problem looked at. If there is that much variance in the manufacturing - I would think Apple would want to do something about that. If there is a combination of circumstances that causes problems with the iOS and the phone (4 & 4s, apparently) - then I would think they'd want to do seomthing about that as well.

Let's just hope that the thread keeps piling up... I seem to have my fix, although after reading a few posts about long calls causing a problem (heat problem maybe???) I feel like I need to call and have a long conversation before I can consider the problem completely solved, which I have not.

Previous owners of iPhones know that their network is not supposed to cause this problem. It's clear that Apple is trying to isolate every user who is experiencing this by quickly changing their iPhone for another. What is not clear to me is why they keep sending people defective phones, now that they can at least test them for this issue first.
