Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    UPDATE ************

Well, after my post last week, I went ahead and met with the Apple Store Genious guy.  At first, I got the same "I've never heard of that issue before".  However, I did not back down and showed him the Apple Support Thread.  He then tried to replicate the issue and he was able to.  The next step for him was to wipe out the phone and start it as anew iPhone with NO back up.  After the phone was started, the issue was replicated on the third call.  The guy then gave me a new phone.  I then went home, backed up the data to my new 4S and stated to make calls.  It's been two days and so far no problems.

My advice to all of you- get a new phone.  DO NOT WAIT FOR A SOFTWARE UPDATE.  I am not sure if the issue is software related or not but I have a strong feeling it is hardware since my phone was wipe out and I still had the issue.  If it turns out to be a hardware issue and you wait over thirty days, they may not give you a new phone and you may get stuck with a big headache.  Apple will do whatever they can to avoid a PR nightmare so they will do the best to deny the issue.  I will keep you posted if my new phone gives me problems but so far so good.  By the way, my fiancee's iPhone 4S has not shown any problems since she got it the same day I got mine.  Her's have a different serial number alltogehter so it is form a different batch.  I am pretty sure the issue is herdware related.

My new 4s has started to play up. When I phone out ican hear them but they can't hear me. It started with just one contact but now nobody can hear me. If I toggle speakerphone to on then everything is fine, but turn it off and they can't hear a thing.

So I join the swelling people frantic because their brand new iPhone is malfunctioning.

Same issue with a brand new iPhone 4S - 32 GB (Network Carrier A1 in Austria (Europe)).

No audio in the earpeice at outgoing calls. When pushing the speaker button two times the participant is audible.

If I use SIRI and then send an outgoing call, it works for a time. The longer the iPhone is unused in standby mode the higher is the probability of "silence in the earpeice".

Sometimes it works properly. I would say 2/3 the failure occurs and 1/3 it works properly.

I detected also the "silence in the earpeice" when I received an incoming call from time to time.

I really hope thats only a software problem and can be corrected soon by an iOS update.

Regards from Austria - Duke :-)

Hi, not quite the same as I can hear the other party clearly it's just they can't hear me . . . It's like my microphone is dead BUT it is not as I can FaceTime without a problem. It is only phone calls!

Hi, the strange thing is that no one can hear me speaking even though I can hear them perfectly . . . But just tried the Skype test call where I recorded a message then they played it back . . . Perfect. So nothing wrong with my microphone. Could it be a software thing?

This is my second reply to this post.

    1. The first time I went to an Apple store to report this problem, they say the problem was caused by the software crash. they helped me "fix" it. It seemed OK then. But no more than one day, same problem apeared again. no outbound audio!

2.I went to the Apple store for the second time. they say this time they would do completely different from what they previously did. I said I want a replacement. They said I have to reseve one online in order to replace it. so stupid (it is very hard to reserve one here)!  i am a current user, not a new customer, why they want me do that!! I agree that they reinstalled my OS and went away.  It seemed OK then..But not completely OK because the same problem will occur occasionly.

    3. I went to the store for the third time today and they double check and told me there was no problem so they wouldn't replace a new one for me! I had to leave without any help!!! I was very frustrated!

    4. I called ATT after home and they told me if I returned it (of course within one month), then Apple would have to reverse my phone number and I can still buy any phone I want.....so I am planning to return this device.

BTW, my girl's black 16G 4s has no such problem, and her battery is good. Hers was purchased online and shipped from China. Mine is a black 32G 4s purchased from an Apple store.

I have the same problem and Turning Mute On and OFF right away fixes the problem so I have the feeling is a software problem.

    Hope it helps.

You never walk alone .... ;-)

I also thought I was the only Austrian iPhone User with this problem.

(Aber jetzt sind wir ja schon mindestens zu zweit!) :-)

UPDATE: Day 2 of replacement iPhone 4S and all OK.

Also, CNET has commented on the issues twice.  Although not directly in the title, checkout item #4 on the list.

Same issue here on my iPhone 4S 16GB in Sweden. Intermittently on outgoing calls I can also hear my self through the phone with echo and distorted voice, then call fails.

Got the phone directly from carrier on 28-oct launch, they just keep telling me to wait for iOS update. Should I demand a replacement or is this problem perhaps not related to hardware malfunction?

    Tjena Hejo82.

Also hailing out of sweden. I got this issue on my very first call.

Returned my Iphone 2 days later after finding this thread.

Telenor sent it to their servicepartner wish replaced it with à new phone.

Did not use the recovery option on the new phone. Set it up as à new phone and so far. It works!

The serial on my new phone starts with C39.

I say keep exchangeing your phone until you get à working one!

Just to add to Michael's post - what I keep seeing over and over here is "Wow, I thought I was the only one" or "Wow, I thought it was just me" - which makes me think that there is a large majority of users out there that don't "know" they are having a problem. They see the symptoms, but they are equating it to a glitch - either with the phone - or more often, just thinking it was something to do with the carrier.

This is absolutely correct.  I mentioned it to a friend of mine, and she acknowledged she was having the same issue, but assumed it was just a fluke on her part or the cell network, until we tested it and discovered it was a consistent problem with her phone as well.

Hi everyone, I live in the UK and my service provider is Vodafone. Got my iphone  4s about 3 weeks ago and I only noticed that during the last two weeks that for about 1 out of every 2 phone calls I make the call does not seem to connect to the other party. I can see the counter counting the seconds on the keypad screen and after about 15 seconds nothing happens. Sometimes when I talk it echoes back at me. After about 15 seconds has passed the call ends, and the counter stops counting and the key pad screen is ready for another call.On occasion I have had to call my husband 3 times in a row, before I get through. He says he can hear me but of course I can't hear him. Each time I call it is costing money. By pure chance I googled my problem and found I was not the only one, that this was happening to loads of people. At first just thought it was an isolated incident. Only when it happened continuously did I think perhaps I had a faulty phone. Tomorrow I will call Apple and see what they have to say. It looks the problem is here in the UK as well as the USA.

Forgot to mention I have a black 16gb phone and I have never used any head phones with the new phone. Serial number starts with DNRGH.
