Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Hey guys, i've had the same problem with the no audio or veeeery low audio.

Turns out that it was my screen protector. Once I removed it, the problems *seemingly* went away so far. I'll keep trying throughout the day, but once i put the protector back it had the same exact problem. I'd try this first, maybe it's due to the proximity sensor being obscured by the screen protector.

(makes sense, because if they said it was a siri raise to speak thing, then the proximity sensor would play a huge part in this.)

Please apple, I love your products, but you're beginning to become a shady CORPORATION that does not care, hardly the apple we knew and loved.

I don't use a screen protector or any bumper or case.

Maybe apple will supply a free bumper to fix the problem (joking)

Same issue. 64bg black 4S on O2 (UK). When I make an outgoing call half the time I can hear them but they can't hear me.

I don't use any screen protectors and I have the mute problem.  It is outgoing calls, time will tick away but I hear nothing.  Occasionally the ringer will have a metallic nasty tone to as well.  The audio overall isn't great.  First iPhone, very disappointing, but I'll give apple an opportunity to redeem themselves.  However, it starts by ACKNOWLEDGING THE PROBLEM!!

This seems to only be happening when I am using the headset. Either get lots of reverb and other callers cannot hear what I am saying or they go silent and come back after a few seconds. Its getting quite annoying as its cropping up in the middle of important calls and is happening multiple times per day. Cannot find a common cause as often it comes out of no-where.

I got mine replaced at the Apple Store...  end of story. I'm just a user and don't care about upgrading to beta code.

    Life is all good again.

I have posted this call issue a few weeks ago go with no responce's. Then I stumbled on this discussion I also have the call problem but with that issue when I type with my Bluetooth Bose2 and Bose original or factory ear buds from apple I sometimes get no clicking sound from the key pad. Also when a text or email comes in there is no audio notification through my ear piece all the time its sporadic again works when it wants too, drives me nuts when I see an important message I did not know was there. I also notice the Bluetooth volume goes down on its own by itself If get a call or using Siri I have to + the volume up most of the time. So what I'm saying is the audio using Bluetooth or ear buds seem to do what they want at any given moment I'm forever adjusting my phone habits because its never the way I want them Its allot of work using this phone for business.

i am dissapointed to read all these posts about the audio problem with the 4s. i bought the 4s for my wife and has been using it for a week.  the more she uses it the more problems she is having with no audio on other end of call.  at first i believed it to be at&t problem but then i stumbled on these posts from all over the world.  have already reset the phone and still having problem.  question: should i go to at&t store (bought it from them) or go to apple store to voice my concerns?

if they don't want to replace a new one to you, return and repurchase. i think this is the only way. they will tell you "they have never heard such kind of problem" even the whole world have been complaining about this.

I have also this same problem with 4S 16GB. Approximately every 2–3 calls out of 10 start with no audio. However, every single one of them gets "fixed" when first switched to speaker phone and after that back to phone audio. Although this is NOT the way to go but it remains as a good workaround now that I know what is going on...

I live in Finland and have purchased an unlocked iPhone (free from carrier lock). When I called the shop I bought it from they said that Apple does not have a DOA program in Finland and the only way to get this fixed is to send the phone to service. Maybe I just wait a bit if Apple starts being generous and maybe even consider reimbursing me with another one(?)

I had to phone apple for a replacement phone.  They were very accommodating and sent out a new phone stating that it must be a hardware fault to me.  Delivered via UPS one working day later and works perfectly at the moment either in the car or as a normal handset.  Don't wait or be put off THESE ARE CLEARLY FAULTY BATCHES

I was told by a "genius" this will be fixed in a software update and to wait, so definately dont wait, get your phone replaced, this is a hardware issue affecting a large number of the devices out there, test it at the Apple Store before leaving to save yourself the trip back (you may have to replace your phone several times until you get it right.)

Made 3 calls to apple care yesterday. One tech told me it "sounds" like a hardware issue, but since I use Verizon, they didnt register my apple care plan...grrr...onto Verizon, who told me "we dont EVER sell apple services, only their products. All repairs, and issues must be discussed with them" ugh! back to apple who tried to sell me an additional Apple care package for $99 to "extend" my plan. UGH! the phone is 3 days old! you mean you want ME to pay for something bad out of the box? Advised to call the insurance carrier paid for thru Verizon. Again, Verizon told me ALL complaints must go thru Apple. Called Apple back where I was told I could get a "loaner phone" if I put a $900 hold on my credit card, and paid $29 for expedited service. UGH! So, rather than go 10 days with no phone while its in their care, and they figure it out, I allowed the hold, paid the express charge and asked them to please go over my phone with a fine tooth comb. He said "truth be told, its gonna be a hardware issue, and I bet we will just replace it once we replicate your trouble." So, got my loaner phone today and FedEx waited the 30 seconds it took to flip out my SIM card and swap phones into the box (which i tucked in a nice note) and off it went to apple.

Activating loaner phone was a hassle as we have United Cellular in the backwoods, and no Verizon towers. Had to drive to town to get Verizon tower signal to activate phone. The loaner phone has Serial # starting with the famous C39GJ as well, but is behaving wonderfully. Of course, so did orginal phone for 3 days.

Spoke to many 4s users who LOVE their phone, never had a single issue, wouldnt trade it for nuthin, and out of the hundreds I found on FaceBook, none had the same issue I had. Hardware? I dunno, Software? I dunno, Siri?? maybe, but its in Apple's hands, and it looks like they will just send me a new phone. They said any issues with new phone, we can do this again, but since it only appears after a few days of use, and not straight out of the box, they cannot speak to why/what this is.

PLEASE dont hang onto a bad phone, make sure you have the apple care plan and send it back for a fix or replacement. Walk into apple store, and swap it out. If you live in the back woods where apple stores are far away, you will have to deal with FedEx and delays. I will update when I get their report.
