Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Went to Apple to pick up my THIRD phone today. Didn't back up from my old phone, set up as new.  Although Apple rep did not acknowledge there being a problem it was obvious he was aware of it.  He stated there are millions NOT having this problem and I stated I just wanted to be one of THEM, then suggested that the thousands of us that are experiencing this must be having a mass hallucination....  Third phone continues to intermittedly not have sound in earpiece on about 1/2 of calls till I toggle speakerphone.  I feel defeated.

i've spent half an hour on the phone with apple support with a nice tech guy. He told me he has never heard of this issue, he also call the "tier 2" tech support and they also told him this is not a known issue.

He suggest to make a complete restore and if the problem occurs again he will send me a replacement.

FUrther to my lastly possting; have just spoken to apple in Milton Keynes and explained the problem. Had to make an appointment to see Genius. Also adked me if my phone has a film cover on thd screen, it doesnt. They did not want to discuss or admit there was a problem. Very sensitive to questions about getting a new phone. No promises were made by them. They did suggest I give the phone back to Vodaphone and get them to sort it out? Vodaphone already told me that it would take 14 days to send away.   Milton Keyes is a 3 hr round trip. Hope it's worth it.

Same problem here.  It only happens about every 10-15 calls, but it is very annoying and only now and then will the speakerphone help.  I have a Verizon 4S with 16GB.  I'd love to have this issue addressed.

Count me as another with the outgoing audio issue on my iPhone 4S here in Canada on Telus.

I am a registered Apple Developer and can also confirm that the issue has not been resolved in the recent iOS5 beta release.

I have opened a bugreport with Apple, as this feels like it is probably a software related issue rather than a hardware one. Could be wrong, but given that it can often be corrected with some manual routing it seems likely.

The following is the bugreport on openradar. Any other devs with the same problem, please open a clone case.

    I have had the following issue with the iPhone 4S 32GB with Telstra mobile Australia;

Approx. 1 of 10 outgoing calls have no sound.

    • When the "Calling..." label is displayed, no ring tone can be heard.
    • When the counter label is displayed e.g. 00:01..00:02, the caller and the receiver cannot hear each other.
    • switching to speaker and then back in most cases fixes the issue for that call.

    • I do use the headphones to listen to music.
    • When I make or received calls, headphones are usually not plugged in and are not used.
    • Never had this issue with the 3GS

    To tpaloka:

I took my Sonera locked phone to the SCF service point last Friday. Was a bit worried because of their "reputation" but on Monday I got a text message saying that I can pick up my new phone. Don't know if it's a refurb but works like a charm and looks new.

Just reread my post from a bit earlier and see that it could be misunderstood.  I jokingly responded "we with the problem must be having a mass hallucination" to reps statement that millions are not experiencing the problem.  Just wanted to be clear.  Employees at Apple are always really nice, but their hands seemingly tied with what they can admit to regarding this issue....

I have disabled Raise to Speak in General-Siri-Raise to Speak and turn it off. So far I haven't had a single problem. Can anyone confirm this works for you too? It looks like the phone is getting confused. I'll report back ifI have it happen again.

I tried this just now (disabling raise to speak)

    First call worked fine.

Second call gave me really bad audio until I switched to speaker and back to headset

    Third call no audio again.

    Sigh.

I'm in the UK and on my second iphone 4S now! both faulty.

The first one from Tesco from new sounded like it had something loose inside and would vibrate to the sound from the speaker, especially annoying if your talking to someone loud!, I took it to the Apple Store Genius Bar and the guy checked it and said it had a faulty speaker and swapped the phone for a new one.. great service!

Second phone has the same no audio faults described by the OP.. the first phone never did this once! which imo suggests this is a batch problem and I'm inclined to say its a hardware fault, as the phones where backed up from the same restore, first one never did it once, the second one does it all the time.. especially bad when using the bluetooth on my BMW. Always the same I make a call the timer starts I hear absoluty nothing, I then hang up re-dials and its perfect, the person I calls always say they could hear me fine on the first call.

Very frustrating problem! I booked in with genuis bar again , but I'm worried I will not be able to replicate the fault in store as its so intermittent!
