Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Count me in on this; I am on the same boat. Besides this issue, I am also experiencing the music becoming unplayable on the new phone. Taking it to the gym is worthless.

Same problem. Black iPhone 4S 64GB. ATT, New York. Ticking timer, no audio. Also Bluetooth in my car doesn't switch to handless audio at times.

Same issue for me. 16g black iphone 4s. If i press the speakerphone button it starts working again. I think it's something to do with the headphones jack.

Same issue with muted outgoing calls (called party cannot hear me). I have not used my headset for calls, so not sure if that is an issue also. White 4S 32GB AT&T. I hope someone at Apple will acknowledge the issue and resolve soon!

Same issue, it happens a few times per day. Usually after the phone hasn't been in use for a while. So far every time that I hang up and redial the number the issue doesn't repeat.

I returned mine to Apple after 3 phones not working. I inserted in the box a card itemizing the issues. 30 days are about up. People experiencing this might think about returning the phone and waiting for the issue to be resolved before being stuck.

went into Apple Store Covent Garden and they swapped the phone out in 15 mins. The 'Genius'  who had just done training was not aware of this issue - unlike the battery life question - and was gobsmacked when I showed him the thread. His boss said it did not surprise him, as Apple tended not to acknowledge issues until they had a solution!

10/10 for in store service. let's see if the issue recurs....

I am having the same problem. Had a 16gb white at&t 4s. I took it in to Apple and they exchanged it. The second phone was experiencing the same problem and more... Static noise in the earpiece while on a call. I could also hear the noise while not being on a call. Also when receiving  calls, the person on the other end could not hear me for about 4 seconds into the call. So I went back to Best Buy and returned the phone...Very dissapointing as I had every single iphone since they came out.. Also, my wife has a sprint 16gb 4s that has the same issue. I hope Apple will acknowledge the problem and make it right for us!!!

Here is a new one. I have an app called 'Theriminator' it is a musical instrument app based on a Theramin that sounds all science fiction. I bought this app on a 3g and it is now on my 4s. I was playing it last night and all of a sudden I lost sound out of the speaker. I tried all the sounds, ringtones, alerts etc, the vibrate worked, but no sound. I rebooted and it came back, but this morning I had an incoming call drop out after 30 seconds or so, like not fail just lost sound, the call time indicator was still ticking, the sound had gone dead, I wasn't on speaker. I hung up and the caller called back and it was fine.

There is something amiss on the 4s, my first gut reaction when my music app stopped sounding was memory overload....

Just wanted to add another instance. 16 gb, black, AT&T. 1 out of 10 calls have no audio and a weird echo of myself but the person on the other end can hear me. I haven't been using a handsfree system. Went to the apple store and recreated it. Genius returned all settings to default, still had the same problem. Got a new phone. He recommended not restoring from a back up as one of the apps or settings might be causing the problem.

So far toggling the speaker button seems to be a workaround.  This points toward a driver/ software issue to me.  Hopefully so because that's easily remedied.

Yesterday I replaced my faulty iPhone 4S at my carrier's store, and this new one is so far flawless after a full day of usage... even the battery is lasting longer.

I'm sure it's hardware.  I did a backup of my bad phone, and restored it to the new phone (firmware and all), and I can't replicate the issue I was having no matter how much I try with changing settings, using/not using Siri, headset on or off, etc.

I am too having this problem, I thought I was crazy!  to help save battery, my guy at the at&t store told me about how to turn off locatin services on settings, as that will drain your battery.  don't need that for much.  Also, make sure you turn of time zone support, that seems to save battery life as well!  Double click the home button to see what apps you have open , then press on them to exit out of them.  these items help!  But I will be at the At&t store tomorrow to find out what they can do to help me.

Same problem here in Sydney AU. toggling the speakerphone button fixes it. Happened on about 30% of calls. Made an appointment at Genius bar and phone was replaced without fuss. They seemed aware of the issue. Restored my backup to the new one. No problems. It seems to be a hardware problem so don't delay getting it replaced or expect a software fix.

Oh, and battery life was just fine on both phones, at least with auto time zone setting off. Took a couple of full charges for the batteries to reach their full capacity.

Quite happy with Apple's handling of the issue.
