Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I bought my phone from Apple store in Sydney, Australia.

Every now and then when I make a phone call I can't hear the other person.

When i press the speaker button it seems to fix the problem.

Very annoying to have this issues, I should have bought Anroid phone, at least they dont have these issues.

Apple said they will have a look at the phone & fix it for me.

Still have yet to visit the store, hoping this will be easy to sort out.

Very annoyed, paid AUD $1000 to have this happen, why dont they sort these bugs out before they release the phone.

Thanks Apple, your phones are really awesome, so awesome never buying your product ever again.

Wow, I can honestly say I didn't think I'd start this much of a mess....

Just an update from me, the replacement phone hasn't had the problem in over a week...  So it was definitely a hardware issue for me.

    Thanks..

Yeah I noticed this a few days ago, person on the line could not hear me, sometimes I get strange reciver feedback, and sometimes I can not hear the person on the line. I turn siri off and it seems better, but no siri is not a good thing. Half the time the phone is basically an ipod touch.

Still no official statement from Apple which is a shame! They must know by now that there is a hugh problem with many of the phones sold. I used the iPhone from day one always bought the latest version as I really like Apple products. The name stands for quality, customer service and just great products.....why nobody comments on it? I understand that it is not nice for a big company to admit that there are faulty phones for whatever reason....but it can not be that more and more phones are sold even knowing they might have a problem.

I sold my iPhone 4 the day I received my 4S....now I sent my iPhone back to Apple and will only purchase a new one once I know what the problem is....and I have no iPhone anymore, sad.

Now I am using a very old Nokia 6100 which was still in one of my drawers from the time before my first iPhone....amazing how long the battery last and it is nice to be able to do propper phone calls....this is what a mobile phone should do

    Update.

Spoke to UK Apple technical support and explained.

Chap was prepared to swap my phone but the courier costs £25 or go to genius bar and they'd do it.

He acknowledged that as I'd done the restore / reset / re-start etc that it looked like a hardware issue.

Not a particularly easy trip but I've booked to see a genius on Monday.

I asked how common this was and he'd said he'd dealt with 'a few' queries like this, but mainly battery problems on the 4s.

He also said the software 'fix' for the battery drain would be out soon (which we know anyway).

Ho hum, let's see what Monday brings.....

Same issue.   Outgoing calls only.  Seems to act up regardless of network carrier (have had issue traveling in various countries) or whether or not bluetooth device is active.

Despite some initial reports regarding a potential database issue, solvable by restoring from an iCloud backup, rather than via iTunes, I can confirm that this problem is not remedied by any kind of resetting or restoring.  Unfortunately.

I have done a complete tethered restore, redownloading the iOS5 through iTunes, and then restoring to a previous backup on my Mac.

    Problem persisted.

I have backed up to iCloud, and then erased all settings and data and restored my iPhone using the backup in iCloud.

    Problem persisted.

I have erased all settings and data, and set up the device as a brand new phone.

    Problem persisted.

Please don't waste your time restoring.

If you have this problem return your phone and exchange it for a new one.

It seems to be the only way out.

Have same problem on outgoing calls particularly after brief periods of inactivity.

Called the Apple Netherlands Helpdesk and they advised me to restore the phone as new and then again check for the problem.

Currently restoring but looking at the posts in this forum doesnt look like it would be helpful.

As someone in Australia who posted on page 2 of this thread, it's disappointing to me to see that Apple have yet to acknowledge this as a problem.

As I have not had a recoccurance of the issue on my 2nd 4S, which I restored my backup of the original 4S onto, I can only assume it's at least a hardware problem that's maybe exacerbated by software.

Anyway, if you're having a problem and can get into an Apple Store, insist on it being replaced.  It worked for me.

Can anyone tell me the link for Apple's 'EXPRESS REPLACEMENT SERVICE' (ERS) ?

I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere... Only a FAQ page and the ERS Terms and Conditions..

    Thanks.

Just because i knew I'd be asked......

I've just erased the phone completely and set up as new phone, didn't sync anthing at all (iCloud or Mac) so phone was as it came out of the box.

First test call I made was muted......

    Got to be hardware, sureley.

Had my replacement a couple of days and despite numerous phone calls, siri use etc I cannot get it to malfuntion.  Unfortunately it has an annoying rattle sound when gently tapping, shaking and putting down.  Don't think the original 4S rattled at all.  Anyway I'm convinced this is a hardware issue - there must be a bad batch or even batches out there.  Really believed was software in the beginning but that no longer makes sense.

Had a long call with apple care germany. my iphone will be picked up tomorrow for repair/exchange in the next 4 days - don´t need the express changing for 39 €

changing over t-mobile germany means waiting for about 3 - 4 weeks as the can´t directly replace it so i think this is the best way for me.

There must be a lot of calls for that problem, the call center agent confirmed "unofficially" that it is a hardware fault and the will replace the micro.

I have the same issue on a white 16G 4s from AT&T in Puerto Rico. I also get a lot of static noise when I connect it to my car stereo using the aux port. The same cable, port and radio work fine with my older 3Gs, iPod nano and iPad.
