Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

After reading multiple posts where the iphone 4 is having the same issue after installing ios5, I agree with some other posts that it's probably a combination of software and hardware. I presume that the 4 and 4s use many of the same components. I have worked with electronics for about 20 years and have seen it many times. One piece of hardware (and possibly one version of software) causes problems on one unit, but works fine in a different unit. Why? I think it all boils down to tolerances, just as someone else had said. Every electronic component has an allowed tolerance. Could be anywhere from +/- 1% to +/- 10% (they can go outside of those ranges in certain cases), depending on the component and product. Many of them are +/- 5%. But, anyway's. I've seen where one component will read almost dead nuts and the next read +/- 5%. Get too many that are near the threshold and you might have issues. I currently work with satellite antennas and have had many times where I send someone a particular part, or parts, to replace and it fixes it. Only to receive their old parts and not be able to recreate the problem.

It could also be due to an engineering change. Sometimes, a particular part, or parts, might become unavailable or discontinued. It is then brought to the engineers' attention and they have to decide what use to replace it/them with. Sometimes they make a poor decision and use a part that might cause issues. I've seen it happen more than once. One time, an engineer at a very large and well known national company that I worked at a long time ago decided to replace a discontinued chip with another particular one that was supposed to be equivalent. Well, what he missed was that the power and ground were reversed on the one that he signed off on. That didn't work out too well.

I bought the iPhone 4S when it was released on 14th October in the UK. I noticed the problem the same day as well. So after a week I went in to the Apple Store in Cambridge to complain. Guess what the so-called Genius told me, to take off my protective cover!

After making some calls to my iPhone he said there was nothing wrong with it (obviously not cos it was the outgoing calls that was the issue) and he said Apple can't give me a new phone because he can't see anything wrong with it but he could get me a refurbished phone instead.

Frustrated, I went into O2 store (the network where I bought my phone) and fortunately they replaced it with a brand new phone and I haven't had that issue since.

Am I going to be offered a refurb or a new phone, I wonder?

Got the phone on 14 October, finally gave in and notified Apple of problem on 19 November (26 days).

Genius bar booked for Monday 14th November, 31 days.....

Got my form email from Apple this morning that they received my original phone, and hope I am satisfied with my replacement. Um...last I heard, I was supposed to be sending my original phone in for an exam, check up, and if needed repair or replacement. All of a sudden the headlines of my email changed from "repair request" to "replacement request" They say "we have received your original Iphone 4s as part of the exchange in your replacement request. The hold from your credit card has now been removed (please allow up to 48 hours for it to be in effect) and we hope that you are satisfied with the resolution. Um...Huh?!

So, I guess they took one look at my phone, and rather than tear it apart, tell me whats wrong with it, give me options on what I wanted to do, they simply said Nope, give her the phone we sent her, and walk away. Now, while I am very happy with a replacment that is currently not having the same issues as my original phone, and very happy that I dont have to arm wrestle for a new phone, it doesnt tell me anything about what happened to my phone. So, still in the dark, but I have the new phone. Same serial # string as the original. I am going to put her thru her paces, and put her on my insurance so...lets see how this goes. Thanks for letting me be part of the voice saying that Apple needs to fix this and several other issues that are going on with this wonderful phone. I LOVE this phone, but only if its going to do what they promised it would do.

I will be back if the new phone shows the same symptoms. Good luck and PLEASE have your phone looked at if you are having issues. Dont hold it and wait. Take it back to apple and let them see it, so they can fix it or replace it. Dont hold onto bad technology. They cant fix what they cant see.

I've never heard Apple giving "loaner" iPhones If they charge your credit card and send you a new phone, it means that they have decided to replace your phone. Actually, they never repair iPhones but always replace the faulty ones. Of course, they are later checked and diagnosed in more detail.

Anyway, happy to hear, your replacement is working fine. Mine's still fine too; no audio or battery issues.

    iPhone 4s.

    # Incoming or out going calls does has no audio. The other party can hear me, but I can't hear them

    # I can hear people when using the loud speaker functionality

Did a restore, but to no avail.

Currently being exchanged under warranty, but how long will it take to ship me a new one?

Westy--- You'll likely be given what we refer to as a 'black box' phone (or 'white box' in the case of the white iphone.) which is a brand new phone which is packaged in a smaller box without the headphones or charger. The would need to inform you if they were replacing with a refurb. In regards to time, I'm not sure where you are located - but in the US, they usually priority ship overnight. With AppleCare+, it's "free". Without, they charge $30.

I received a black 4s in a white box that was about 3/4" thick (serial number was lower numerically, but very close to my original). I was told that it was a new one, before it was sent. When I called back and told them that the screen was scratched and that I was sending the same one back, they put me on with a manager and he admitted that it was a refurb. He said that they replace the screen and battery on all of them. Maybe they do, but they must be gunking them up while their doing it. The one that I got at the Apple store came out of a black box about 1 1/2" thick (serial number was much lower numerically). That one had a very small chip in the glass, so I think it was a refurb as well. Maybe some of them are new, but I think many of them are refurbs. That was my experience with the 'black or white box'.

OK so I called Apple and no questions asked they asked me to go and pickup a replacement phone from one of the authorised resellers in the Budapest (Since Apple has no shop here). I walked in to the office and the guy said I need to run a hardware test on the phone before I give the replacement, and he asked what was wrong with it, soI provided the case ID and description. Immidiately he said don't worry about the test and gave me the phone. no questions asked!!

I have to say I have done about 20 calls already and non of them have shown this issue, but before 1 in 3 calls had no audio. I will monitor it and provide an update later.

I agree with some of you guys here... I think it's ios5.

I was the one who rolled out the 22 phones at work and the CEO had the issue (firgures, he was the only one).  But now someone else has the issue on a iPhone 4 !!!  ios5.

Sent in my phone for repair Monday.  Wednesday they sent my phone back saying they couldn't reproduce the issue.  But I was able to reproduce the issue in 2 calls.  I think they only made 1 call on the phone since it has pics and video of the people performing the test & one attempted call in the call log.  I'm very upset right now.  I guess the only way I will get another one would be to do the advance replacement swap.

I'm experiencing problems with outbound calling from the iPhone 4s too. The symptom is that when the call is placed, I hear no audio from the party I'm calling...it appears from the screen of the phone as though the call has been connected successfully, but there's no audio. I experience this issue about 50% of the time on my outbound calls. Please, Apple - acknowledge there's a problem and commit to a software fix.
