Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Yep,  I'm having the same problem... by the time I realize the person on the other end cannot hear me, it's too late and they have hung up.  Can't seem to pinpoint any particular conditions that cause this problem and impossible to predict when it will happen.  Once I did think quick enough and went to the "Speaker" mode and that saved the call.  Pretty sure, in my expert opinion (none) that this is a software issue.  Something is causing the phone to maybe mute the microphone?

Hope there is a quick fix in the works.

Update...went back to Apple store per my talk with 800 my iPhone assistant. I again went to Leawood, KS store. This time my Genius guy was a gentleman. He listened and showed empathy. He acknowledged the problem has no official fix yet, but gave me a brand new replacement without hassle. Twenty outbound calls so far and all have connected where I can hear ring and other caller! So far so good. Will keep this thread updated.

I was on the phone with Apple support just now, and they advised to go to

Settings->General->Reset and do Reset Network Settings.

According to the support guy (I asked him whether he was aware of the issue, and he said they were "kinda aware of it") that fixes the problem in 95% of cases. Unfortunately I can not verify the fix, since I haven't been able to reproduce the problem in the past half an hour, I've made about 50 calls, all went through. This is extremely strange, because I have been experiencing this issue in about quarter to half of my normal calls. I'm not sure if it is location or time of day specific. I do not normally call from the mobile phone while I'm at work in Manhattan, but when I call after work in Brooklyn, that's where the problem can be reproduced pretty reliably.
Also, my collegue who updated his iPhone 4 to iOS 5 claims he has been experiencing this issue. Which kinda points to the fact that it might be a software issue, but then I can't find an explanation as to why some phones have this issue and some do not.
And one more thing. I have been experiencing issues in my car with hands-free connection. Dialing a number doesn't always switch to hands-free Bluetooth, music keeps playing. Phone call is connected, displays timer digits, no sound via Bluetooth hands free or in the phone. Trying to switch audio source on the phone made no difference. Stopping, turning off the car and turning it back on (forcing the re-pairing of the device) fixes the problem. Not sure if this should be a separate issue with a separate thread.

I tell you last night I did a reset all data and then find an area that had the maximum signal level and I did a network reset and not have the problem again, without a doubt this is software problem, eg by many cell an update are unable to use this work well and other software problem only affects some users and not others, or better is the problem of baseband, sorry for my english is not my native lenguage

I tried this, makes no difference. First call I made after resetting and there was no audio.  I can now make no outgoing calls on bluetooth at all, and am getting more and more issues with normal calls.  You can hit the speaker button and then hear the call, but when you hit it again, it loses the audio again.

I'm going in on Sunday better ngive me a brand new phone or I'll be losing my rag.  I rang the support and they said they would send me a new one, but would take about a week, no charge.  Then got an email telling me I was being sent a box to return it.  I rang back the following day and they said I wasn't gettig a replacement, but I could have one if I paid £23 for the courier fee!  ***ing appalling service, for a £600 phone.

The more I think about this, the more I think that it is a software bug. Whenever the problem showed up on mine, I got an echo of whatever I was saying. So, the earpiece was outputting whatever went into the microphone/noise canceling mic. I don't think that there are any apps or functions that would even use that feature or that the phone was even meant to do that.

Please, someone at Apple. Let us know that you are aware of this problem and will be working to correct it. That's all we want to hear. We know that if the experts work on it that it will be fixed.

Hello! i've just done what apple suggested you (resetting network settings) with no result: at first call I re-experienced the issue, i've had to switch to speaker and to earpiece again, quality was good both in and out.

I have the same issue with my 4S. Even with 5.0.1 and resetting network settings.

Update to earlier post. We are on our 3rd 4s phone now after first two had issues with outgoing sound. Went to Apple store for third and described issue. We were asked if we had an iPhone before. Felt like they were trying to blame us but they were doing us a favor giving us the new phone.

We were given a new phone but it could not be activated at the Apple Store because the servers were busy or unavailable. Was told to go to the Verizon store. Went there and they were great. It turns out there was a problem with the SIM on this phone (that has been confirmed by Verizon) and it could not be activated with it in. That is the second time out of three phones that happened as well. Took out the SIM and it worked fine. Tried three calls with the 3rd phone with no sound issues but that is not exactly a scientific study. Hopefully, this will be it.

So, battery issue, SIM issue, outgoing sound issue is what we experienced with 4s. Verizon store people awesome. Apple store people, not so much.

GREAT! Glad you finally got an appropriate response. Do keep us updated - but the list of people who have been satisfied with their replacement phones seems to be growing. Pointing further that there is some kind of hardware variance that is causing an issue with portion of the phones.

Thanks for checking back in and let us know if you experience anything further. Folks, I can't emphasize it enough, if you're sitting on your hands hoping for a software fix, you should really consider getting your phone changed out.

Same Problem with Iphone 4s 16 Gbyte from Vodafone Germany. Even with restoring to news Iphone and Update to 5.0.1 and resetting network settings. Loudspeaker works fine - internal speaker does not. Changing audio source while starting call -> no problem.

I don't have this problem, atleast I don't think so but does anyone else hear buzzing and cracking from the phone when they are on 3g in a quiet environment.

    Shawn--

That's not the same problem we're reporting on this thread - but if you read back through, you will see there are several others with your issue and it seems that the fix for it (as well as the one we're dealing with on this thread) seems to be a hardware replacement.

    Good luck -- Ted

I am having the same issue.... I diabled SIRI and thought that was the problem but it did not help. It happens about evry 4-6 calls for me. When I pick up the phone I can hear an ambient echoing sound as I am dialing out and I know it will happen. This needs to be fixed asap.
