Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

ios 5.0.1 does not correct this error by correcting the battery, but I imagine the next software will be solution

After the 5.0.1 today I doubt very much that this problem is fixable in software. It's a physical defect in the phone. Apple has 50,000 employees at it's disposal, you think they couldn't have put a team on this to fix for 5.0.1? They're going to quietly replace your device until they get it right, they know it's the only solution to the problem. And why not? they're not receiving any serious scrutiny from the media. They're not going to come out and admit it if they dont have to, it will only result in them selling less phones.

Just picked up 5 - Iphone 4s's for the office a few weeks ago... Mine workded flawless for the first couple weeks, now getting the no audio on about every 3rd dial out. Notice it actually started the first time when I plugged in my headset into the iphone jack and has continued ever since. Must have something to do with it getting confused about which output to send the audio to.

Never felt like it was a software issue. Only advise to give out is ... all iPhone 4S users should pair the mobile with a bluetooth headset and you will immediately find if its a faulty phone. Headsets might work at times, bluetooth regularly failed from the second call. I did that on the first day and ordered for the replacement. 1 week i used the faulty phone and other than bluetooth/headset problem, there was no other issue with the phone.

The replaced phone has no issues by the way. I am trying all weird combinations. So far working good. Defintiely a hardware problem. Get it replaced as soon as possible and if you cant keep coming back to apple store, just return and get the full refund option. Wait and see how this plays out.

And have to add...... completely destroyed my first iPhone moment

And here I thought Apple was all about customer service and quality.

Update. This is my third reply to the original post:

I went to the apple store for the fourth time two days ago and request them to "doublecheck" the phone because it really has the no outbound audio problem. They did it. And they change another one to me. Up till now, not problem.

BTW, how to solve the no outbound audio problem? When you see the timer counting, press the speaker button, then it has audio, both side can hear each other. BUT THIS IS REALLY FRUSTRATED.

    Ted..

Went to the Genius Bar today... I think 80% of the population has some type of Apple product lol... it was flipping busy.

Anywaysss... exchanged the phone with no problem at all... been a few hours... haven't had "no audio" issue YET... but I am going to give it a few days until I can truly relax...

These boards are extremely helpful!! It's works as a form of therapy...

Either way... will keep everyone posted but so far so good.. HOPE EVERYONE can get their problems resolved sooner rather then later.

    Gabe.

Just wanted to add to the list of those with the 4S audio problems. White 4S, 32GB, AT&T. Purchased on Oct 14th from AT&T store. Have not taken it into Apple genious bar. Thinking about waiting it out. Seems like a software issue. Have to dial on speaker phone and then switch to phone speaker. SIRI turned on, raise to speak on, bluetooth on. Have not played with it a lot since it is my wife's phone. But it is very frustrating to be the one answering on the other end when she calls me and saying "hello" 2 or 3 times!

Since I purchased direct from AT&T, will Apple do an exchange at the GB if I decide to take it in?

Hey all, I'm from page 27ish - which was two days ago and I think around 184 post on this issue. Just to refresh everybody. SAME PROMLEM 4s blk. 32 gb - when placing a call no audio. Yes toggling worked - but i bought an apple product . . . Need I say more. So I bought the apple care plus plan ($99.97) with the phone, something like that. Who's carrying around 7 bills for a new phone. Now a days. So yesterday 11/9 I call apple care and explained my problem and that I've been on the support board and 184 post later . .  .we have a problem here . . The tech support lady understood and offered a NEW replacement. Received it 24 hours later. Hello iCloud I'm back. I place a couple calls, no problem. Lets keep our fingers crossed, and I hope all of you have the same luck. Check in a couple days and give you a heads up. Thanks Apple

    Update to my original post.

Booked Meeting with the genius bar, told apple employee my issue, they offered to replace my handset for a brand new one. Was all very simple and easy, as long as you do it within the 14 days from your original purchase date.

I made a bunch of calls & had no issues so far, seems to work fine.

Think my original handset was faulty & i think Apple know this hence why they offer replacement handset.

Besides the battery issue, the Iphone 4s works fine now.

So yeah brand new handset seems to have fixed the issue.

If any of you guys are having this issue just go back to apple & they will give you a replacement handset, just make sure you do it within the 14 days period of purchase, well thats how it is here in Australia.

And make sure you do a full backup of your phone, cause they wipe your original handset & your new one is well new.

Overall I'm happy the way Apple handled this issue, my problem is fixed what more can I ask for.

    Thanks Guys.

Your posts have been a big help.  iPhone 4S, white, 32g, failing intermittently on outgoing calls where I would ge an echo of my voice, and not hear the receiving party's phone ring, nor hear them answer the phone, nor hear them talk to me.  Also, i was having a lot of "call failed" when trying to make outgoing calls.  We are on AT&T in a poor zone in Coloraado, but my husband's iPhone 4 was making outgoing calls.  I was on wifi, also on the AT&T microcell, had 4 full bars and calls were failing.  Might as well stuck with my old iPhone 3 that I've dropped abut 100 times (good case by InCase- thx.)

Went to the Apple store and brought my iPad with all your posts.  They had never heard of the problem at that store.  Really?  Showed them the posts and how frequent they were and also googled the problem on one of their laptops on display and showed that list to them also.  They took my phone into the back, returned and said it was fine and I should reset the wireless vendor.  No, I'll make a call- hoping it would fail.  Yes, the call failed as described, the phone was taken into the back, red-diagnosed, had a problem and I immediately got a new replacement phone which I then needed to reload all info on, but I was backed up on iTunes...so all was good.

    Thanks Apple for coming through.

Thanks to this forum, which kept me from wasting time and effort going in circles.

I bought an unlocked 32gb black iPhone and it was fine the first week. Second week I started having a problem with outgoing calls. Same symptom reported by others on this thread - microphone doesn't work but speakerphone does. After switching back from speakerphone the mic works.

Today I tried to make a call using the headphones and they didnt work almost like it was stuck on speakerphone mode. Now every outgoing call I make has a problem. Sometimes after 15 or 20 seconds the mic fades on and the person on the other end can hear me. I tried this myself by calling my home phone and it is really weird how the mic sound gradually fades on.

I tried to restart but it didn't fix the problem. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow.

I posted about this issue on page 24 just over a week ago; 32Gb 4S on Telstra in Australia.  Got the replacement from Apple and have not had a reoccurance of the issue so far.  I made over 100 test calls, trying different things like wired/BT headsets and Siri before and after the calls, and all worked correctly.

I also thought it was software related since a software toggle (i.e. speakerphone then back to earpiece) would resolve the issue.  However even after erasing and setting up as a new phone, the issue persisted on the original phone.  With the replacement, it works fine even after restoring from my backup, so it looks less like software.  I'd suggest anyone holding out for a software fix, don't!  Get a replacement now.  As soon as I mentioned to the AppleCare person what was happening, he said it was definitely hardware and they would send another one right away.

FYI - my original phone serial started with C39 and so does the replacement, so assume it's also new.  It came in a white "AppleCare" box.

Good luck to everyone who's having this issue.  Come on Apple - acknowledge that this issue is real!

Hi everyone. I've never posted here before but I just wanted to add to the conversation in hopes that Apple will respond if enough people complain about this issue.

I bought a 16gig iPhone 4S (Verizon) on the day it was released.  This is my very first iPhone.

Starting on day 1, I noticed that when I tried to call someone, the phone would make no noise...no ring tone, no answer, nothing, just endless silence. I would hang up and then call again and then it would work (but then the reciever of course would be like "why did you call me and hang up??") This problem has persisted since day 1, although it doesn't do it 100% of the time.

Secondly, I noticed today that when I was on the phone, the person I was talking to would keep asking me to repeat myself over and over; apparently, my voice kept cutting out over and over. Then, I made another call later in the day and I kept hearing weird garbling and the person I called kept asking me to repeat myself again. My phone had full bars in both instances. Although I love my iPhone and its features, I could at least trust my old (dumb)phone to make a call on the first try.

The iOS5.0.1 update didnt seem to fix any of my issues... Had no effect on call quality and it seems like my battery is worse than before! As it's my first experience with an iPhone I'm kinda disappointed with these 2 problems (call quality and battery)... Should I get it exchanged for another iPhone 4s or has that not been found to fix the problem?

    @michaelb1234

They may have 50,000 employees but 99% have nothing to do with this.

    @everyone else

Apple aren't idiots, but their tendency to wait until they have a fix / solution to a problem before going public only works so long as they find their answer quickly.  Given that the problem is intermittent and may or may not be a combination of specific hardware / firmware / temperature / etc it could be a very difficult problem to diagnose - therefore is very annoying to those of us that are waiting for answers.

There is a stop-gap solution - exchange your phone for a new one.

If you aren't prepared to do that, good luck to you.  You may be waiting a while.

It is pretty easy to see from this forum that it is a hardware issue as the only people that no longer have a problem are those that have exchanged their handset.

Condolences to those of you that are looking at a multi-week wait to return your phone by mail and have a replacement mailed out.  I'd recommend Apple's ERS (Express Replacement Service).  If you took out Apple Care with your purchase, the service is free.  If not, you have to cough up the courier costs - approx $30.  A pain, but you will not be without a phone as they mail you the replacement first, then you return your faulty one.

The only real downside of the ERS is that, understandably, Apple put a hold on the cost of the replacement phone on your credit card... just in case you decide to steal it and keep both.  Once they receive your faulty phone they release all funds back to your card.  So, effectively costing you nothing (but the courier cost, if you don't have AppleCare).
