Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    UPDATING ON MY IPHONE 4S.

I called up Apple instead of giving my phone to Telus for 1-2 weeks with no phone.  They asked a couple questions, and mailed me a replacement.  Went with the hold on my card instead of mailing in for repair/replacement.  Wasn't without my phone through the whole process.  Best part of it all... this phone doesn't have any issues with the no audio/mic during calls.  Every outgoing call works of my past 50'ish.  Though I notice when I'm too loud, even a cough, will make my audio cut out during the loudness during calls now... Maybe that's normal.

Seems like hardware.. be-it different in some phones, or just faulty in the first million... only Apple knows.  Anyways, anyone with this problem should just go replace their phones before the refurbs start hitting... in 4 days?

After doing a network reset, and a restore to default setting,  I was still having problems with the 4S.  (set phone appt. with apple for initial call. I finally called following trying the protocol to no avail.  They are fed ex'ing me a new phone since the closest apple store is over 200 miles away.  I am happy with the service I received via phone, now I hope my new phone works correctly.

No you're right, 99% of their employees have nothing to do with it, so what, they're not short on staff, and if it was a software bug I think 3 weeks is plenty of time to fix it, I may be wrong.

I'm fortunate to live a 5 minute walk from the Apple store, if I had to cough up $30 dollars each time I had to exchange this phone I would have I already ran a bill of $90 not to mention the trouble.

I agree with you that Apple are not idiots, far from it, they're managing the situation perfectly (for them of course.) Delaying a public response will only work in the short term, in the long term there is a good chance of this being picked up by the mainstream media. Why it hasn't already is beyond me. In an age where Google releases a buggy Gmail app for the iPhone and every tech blog is all over it in a second, this should have been covered a long time ago.

My wife has the same issue on her 4S, yet mine is fine.  (However, I have the very loud vibrate noise problem).  This needs to get traction and get fixed.  Apple quality seems to have gone done since my old 3G. Apple are you listening?

I have not read all 47 pages or responses but my situation is just a tad different. On my phone, I will dial out. No audio ring back but the call timer will start. I cannot hear the other party. They cannot hear me. I turn the phone off using the button on top. Turn it back on and once it is booted and registered it works fine. However, today I had to do that twice! Called the ATT store and the agent there told me that they have had others report the same problem and they switched out the SIM card and in 90% of the cases that resolved it. I will go in and see if that fixes it for me. The agent said he had the same problem with his Iphone as well. I have also had problems with getting audio when connected by bluetooth as others have reported. Not sure if these problems are related or not. Will get the SIM card swapped out and see what happens. Otherwise, will have to see about swapping out the handset.

I live in Columbus, Ohio and got my 4S on Monday (Nov.07). The same problem appears randomly and I decided to go to Apple Store. The staff there said it is a hardware problem and replaced a new one for me without any test. I am really pleased with it. Now I use the new phone and made about 15 outgoing calls without any problems at all. So if you have the same problem, you should go to Apple Store and ask them.

Try just toggling the speaker phone on and off to get your audio back - shouldn't need to power down the phone. That's what about 99% of the 47 pages is reporting.

I had same issue and a replacement phone fixed the problem.  Of the 47 pages so far, this has proven to be a fairly reliable fix.  Some had to swap out 2 or 3 phones to get one that finally worked without fault.

    Good Luck.

Does 5.0.1 fix the problem by any chance?

Just made my booking at the Genius Bar for Monday.

I now realise that I experienced the problem when plugged into my tomtom carkit (which connects via bluetooth).

The reason I haven't experienced any problems in the last week is that with my new bumper - it doesn't fit in the carkit. Although I do want to be able to use a bluetooth headset.

Will update as to their response on Monday

    @michaelb1234

    Exactly man....

How come this is not a big issue for the mainstream media ? This just brings out how all these tech guys are paid up and managed by apple. And I thought it was apple-haters just spreading false news.

Anyways the image about Apple in my mind just went down after this 4S experience. Now its like any other company and when you compare them like that, there is nothing 'WOW' about iPhone in the first place.

I've changed 4 iphones and now everything seems to work fine!! In Italy the problem is known and affects a minor part of iphone users.... I don't know the reason but the only solution seems to change again and again the Iphone.

BTW.... it's a great phone and now I can use it even to call :-)

Has anyone thought that the reason only a small number (500+ here?) have the issue is because not many people use Bluetooth headsets?
