Well, after about 27 days of holding out that a fix would come via software, and still having a high percentage of the audio failure when making outbound calls, I decided to go to the Genius Bar for the first time ever. I for one, couldn't believe the shear number of employees that my local store has on staff. I didn't stop to count, but I believe there were probably at least 25 of them, and our store is rather small. I arrived for my appointment about 5 minutes early, and checked in. They told me to wait until the previous time slot was finished, and someone would be right with me. I hadn't walked away for but about 20 seconds, before someone was looking for me.
We went over to the side, and he asked what I was having issues with, and he gave me ample time to explain the issue, and asked a few questions about it. He never once asked to verify the problem, but after typing a bunch of stuff into my ticket, he said he would swap it out with a new phone. He came back, with a black box, similar to the original, only about half as thick, pulled a phone that was wrapped in bubble wrap out, and had the screen stickers still on it.
He asked if I had backed up the phone, and I said I had. He said I could connect to WiFi in the store, and restore if I wanted to. I said, that sounds great, I'd like to make some calls before I leave, just to make sure the new one is working. I asked what would happen if this one had the same issue, and he said I would have to go talk to AT&T, which seemed odd. I said, okay, and just proceeded to setup the phone, after he walked away after closing my ticket. Took about 5 minutes to get everything back on.
I made 20 calls while in the store, and not a single one had the issue. I also used Siri a couple times, trying not to look like a moron as well. Satisfied so far, I picked up an AirPort Express to use when I travel, and left the store. I made another 10 calls walking through the mall to my car, and didn't experience one audio problem. In fact, not even a garbled ring, or static-y ring or anything, just clear, consistent ringing.
I won't be fully sure the problem is fixed probably for another week or so, but I think this one seems to be working great. My old phone had a DNPG serial no, the new one has a C36G serial no.
As much as I didn't want to exchange the phone, after my experience, and those of others, I'd highly recommend it if you can get to a store. I was treated well by everyone I spoke to. Here's hoping to not ever see this happen again.
