Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Same issue here. Unlocked black 32gb 4S purchased in Belgium. Every few outbound calls no sound, speaker on/off turns sound on. Have done a restore, problem on the first call attempt so not a solution for me. Macline store (belgian re-seller) states that all iPhone repairs/problems are handled by Mobistar. Will have to bring in the phone and they will send it in, no replacement, will take 2-3 weeks without the phone... They have to be joking?! You spend 740 Euro on the phone and this is the level of customer care?!

Not sure what to make of this, wait for next updated software or assume it is really a hardware issue, just bring the thing back and be patient? Guy in the store stated he has never heard of the problem.

My wife got a new black 16GB iPhone 4S last week and it is having the same problem. When a call is placed, there is no ring sound and and the call sound it muted, even though the call timer is running.  Hitting the speaker button twice does sort the problem.  The first call made suffers from this problem every time, subsequent calls seem to be okay.  I did the iOS 5.0.1 update last night and it seemed okay afterwards but then this morning the fault is back again.

She got the phone from Three Ireland, and they say that if the full restore doesn't work then she will have to send the phone away to be checked.  As the micro-sim doesn't fit into any of our older phones, this means she will have no phone for most of the week.  Very annoying.  Also, this is her first smart-phone, and first non Nokia, and she can't believe that the call function on a phone doesn't work properly!

Any idea if there is anywhere in Southern Ireland that would examine/swap the phone on the day?

    Update on this.

Went to the store, one of the guys there said that they know the problem but no one would go into specifics. As no phone in stock he could not exchange straight away. He would have done it though, as this is within 14 days of purchase. So the other option was to send it in. So now no phone for I would say 2 weeks at least, hope they solve the issue. Friendly staff, helpful, but still don't feel this is the right way to deal with the problem. You buy the brand new phone and get left out in the cold without immediate replacement. Somehow doesn't feel right.

I've updated to 5.0.1 and two problems I was having seem to be fixed:

    1. Making outbound calls - Callers could not hear me but I could hear them.
    2. When I used to turn on my speaker phone I used to hear a loud click / hissing sound for about a second.

One thing I did after I updated to 5.0.1 was reset my network settings and then rebooted the phone by holding the power button down.  Did this step make a difference?  I have no idea but it is worth a try.

I will post an update in a couple of days to let everyone know if the problems are really fixed.

I just got off the phone with Apple and they will replace my phone. The Apple rep was immediately aware of the problem and there was no discussion about trying other fixes.

Apparently the phone has two microphones and two speakers. When you use the speaker phone it uses one of the microphones and one of the speakers and when used in a regular manner it uses the others. The rep said that this problem was a hardware issue with one of those pairs and they would replace the phone. The fact that by tapping the speaker phone button corrects the problem leaves me with the impression it could be a software issue, but hopefully someday we will hear the whole story.

Hopefully the replacement phone will work properly.

Well I finally got a chance to go back to car phone warehouse after having problems with muted calls.

I walked in and walked out 5 minutes later with a brand new phone.

    The new phone works fine.

Very happy with the service from carphonewarehouse.

They listened to my problem and swapped the phone without even checking it.

I must have had a bad batch phone.

    Whooooopy I'm happy again.

I swapped the phone 27 days into my contract.

My advise go and swap your phone if your still within 28 days.

What do you have to loose ?

    Good luck.

Most of my outgoing calls have this problem.  Have an appointment this afternoon and am on phone with AppleCare who, despite this thread ON THEIR OWN SITE, seem "mystified."

    UPDATE:

Went to Apple Genius Bar and they exchanged the phone after doing a check on it. They did not ask to see if the situation was occuring at the store and they did not acknowledge a problem existed. Overall good experience. Now just need to see if the new phone works any better than the original. Fingers crossed!

i am on my second iphone, just swapped it out for a new one at the apple store. the replacement has the same issues in terms of people not being able to hear me, even on incoming calls. the signal is also weak most of the times, 2 bars or so. i'm wondering if i should swap another time, or just get another phone with a better radio, this phone is only good as a computer, otherwise useless as a phone - too many audio issues.
