Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

just updated to 5.0.1 and can say after heavy experimentation, that my outgoing call problems are fixed. before 5.0.1, every 5th or 6th call, or randomly, my outgoing calls would not ring but the timer still went up, and whenever i talked i heard my own echo. however after the update, and and 35 experimentation calls to my brother , i can say that my problem has now gone away. before the update, i completely wiped my phone back to default and on brand new start up, sync'd through icloud. there and behold , everythign works fine now. if anyone wants to know my serial number starts with DNPG.

I called my husband over and over without problem. However, as soon as I called other contacts the problem came back. New phone seems ok so far. They KNOW it is a problem and seems like they have been told not to discuss it because they replaced my phone w/o any question!

I only accepted the new phone with another 30 days to return.  Otherwise, I would've returned it and waited for all the bugs to be fixed.  I am ok with there being issues, but Apple has a reputation for not acknowledging problems and that irritates me.  Especially after all the $$$ I have spent on Apple products in the past years.  I have never had any problems until now.  No big deal, I loved my Droid and would have no problem going back to it.  I haven't exactly been wowed by the 4s.

after reading your comment , i decided to also call two of my friends, after 30 outgoing calls to both of them, 60 altogether, all of the calls had a outgoing ring, so i think my problem is fixed. however i will keep calling and hope the problem doesnt come back. if it does then ill go return the phone. im on my 24th day , so i still have 6 days to return. anyhow just puting my 2 cents in.

My 4s is having exactly the same problem (with Fido in Canada); it's very annoying. The no audio issue is totally random, can't predict when to happen. Should I call them and get a new one? What if the replacement makes no difference from my current one? (Don't wanna pay the shipping fee for it since there's no guaranty that the replacement will have no such issue.)

I think I would get it replaced, it is worth a shot. If this phone continues to have problems, I will return it and wait for Apple to fix the bug. Hopefully, they will do something soon. While I was at the Genius Bar, two other people were there with the same problem.

An update since my last post a couple of weeks ago:

    1) We've no Genius Bar in Singapore so I went to my local telco with my problem. They offered to replace my handset with one that, according to them & Apple, is "factory new" meaning refurbished. It came in a slim black box without any design on its cover. So far, the set is working perfectly fine with no audio problems for all out-going calls so far.

    2) I've updated to 5.0.1 and likewise, so far no problem. Battery life is normal but I must admit I turned off Siri but kept my location services on.

One question I have in mind though is this: Does the refurbished set I have decrease the value when I want to sell it in the future? Because apparently these refurbed are 'marked' by a different serial number.

Just wanted to update again.  Three solid days of many, many outbound calls with ZERO failures.  Get a replacement! My husband also just got a 4S (same model as mine - black 32) and his has been perfect out of the box.  We both have used Siri, bluetooth, etc. and no problems at all.

Update...went back to Apple store per my talk with 800 my iPhone assistant. I again went to Leawood, KS store. This time my Genius guy was a gentleman. He listened and showed empathy. He acknowledged the problem has no official fix yet, but gave me a brand new replacement without hassle. Twenty outbound calls so far and all have connected where I can hear ring and other caller! So far so good. Will keep this thread updated.

GREAT! Glad you finally got an appropriate response. Do keep us updated - but the list of people who have been satisfied with their replacement phones seems to be growing. Pointing further that there is some kind of hardware variance that is causing an issue with portion of the phones.

Thanks for checking back in and let us know if you experience anything further. Folks, I can't emphasize it enough, if you're sitting on your hands hoping for a software fix, you should really consider getting your phone changed out.

What about the new unlocked phones which arrived after 11-11? is the same problem still?

And how much time apple gives to exchange phones that have issues?

Just tried resetting the network, so sad it doesn't resolve the problem at all. I bought it from Apple Canada online store and the serial number starts with C39GM....... I really hate having to exchange it. Not only do I have to pay the $30 express shipping, but also another $30 bucks for the protection film. Most importantly, I bought something that keeps annoying me from the very beginning, and Apple has nothing to say about it. Hardware, software, or they are working on it? They need to at least let people know it. This is so frustrated. I really should have kept my old Nokia, at least it works as a phone!

Has anyone performed a restore and still experienced the problem?
