Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I did and the problem still existed. It was VERY interesting that the Genius Bar asked NO questions and just replaced it.

Same issues here. Tried restoring my iPhone 4S Black (Factory Unlocked) several time. did 'ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS' from my iPhone as well but there is no network at all and even when there are signals I am not able to make any call or send a text message. Apple please help as I need my iPhone!!

KellyandMolly -- glad to hear you are finding your problem resolved as well. I'm over a week now of especially heavy usage for work last week and the phone has performed absolutely flawlessly. I couldn't be more pleased. However, it has become obvious that Apple is not going to officially acknowledge this issue.

Anyone still experiencing this issue needs a hardware replacement. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in the US the little black/white box phones are NOT refurbs. They are just new phones without the pack-ins (headphones, charger, etc. ) so don't be afraid to go with one of these.

Continued good luck to those with the replacement phones - my replacement renewed my faith in the Apple product line, even if it took this support community to troubleshoot and figure out what needed to be done.

Let me extend my thanks to everyone here who helped figure out the hardware issue before I ended up stuck with a bum phone, thinking a firmware update was going to fix the issue. MichaelB1234 - thanks for helping to get the tech blogs to take notice! Best regards to everyone and those who have this problem who haven't replaced yet, you really should, if you still can. Take care all -- Ted

Where are you based? I'm in the UK, mostly on 3G but for the past few days I'm visiting India and am mostly on GSM where I'm experiencing the problem even more. Got an appointment setup at the Genius bar the day after my return (next Sun) and hope to get it exchanged. It's just that I'm afraid the replacement may be a refurb and I've only had this since launch day!

    Reporting back.

Made 40 calls since the update and every one has worked perfectly.

Considering on Wednesday I made 20 calls and in around half the other person couldn't here me.

    Result!.

Was it the update, who knows, but it's now working......

Westyxxx - Nice one! I updated but still had issues however I'm just about to complete a restore, and will report back tomorrow...

Perhaps it's to do with having restored an older hardware backup to the new phone (4 to 4s) hence creating bugs?

    Thanks for sharing your findings!

Just had mine replaced today, they wouldn't admit there was an issue 'said you can find anything on the internet', but changed it straight away, no testing, no questions.  The guy did say he's had some static on his though, which I heard was another problem some users have.  Also commented on the battery life issue.  Anyway made a few test calls OK, but the big test will be when I set up my bluetooth in the car.  Will do that tomorrow, and see what the outcome is.  The Genius said I cna take this one back if I still get problems.  The serial is totally different on the new pohone, had a DNQG code on the old one, this is a C38G serial.

I got my iPhone 4S last Friday (11-11-11) and am on the Telstra network here in Australia.  Synced it with iTunes which immediately downloaded the iOS 5.0.1.  Have now experienced both audio issues being discussed here.  Received a call yesterday and could hear the caller and they could hear me.  Tried to make a call but they couldn't hear me!  I will try activating Siri and use it once as you have suggested and see how we go after that.  Will let you know.

Have been reading all of these.  Went to make a call and there was no audio on the internal speaker.  Now, first, I activated and tried Siri - works well.  Then, I turned OFF my bluetooth.  Then, made a call and internal speaker works???????  Still reckon it's a software issue and maybe when Apple releases iOS 5.0.2 it  may address because i'm experiencing these issues with iOS 5.0.1

    UPDATE ON BLACK 4S 64G

I had decided to return my 4S to AT&T and get a new one because my 30 days is running out.  They did not have any phones and the Apple Store said they didn't have any, so I decided to go back to my 3GS.  The store manager advised me that the Apple Store usually has replacement phones and called and made an appointment for me.  I was concerned that I would not have enough time to test the phone before Nov. 14th so she extended my time to test the phone until Nov. 23 and agreed to accept the phone from the Apple Store with the repair receipt.

I picked up the new phone from Apple on the 9th, took it home and the first call I made failed but I was able to hear the caller before it failed (progress).  I called AT&T and explained the problem I was having with the failed calls and "can you hear me now" issues.  I was on the phone with AT&T approximately an hour and AT&T will call me back on the 14th to see how things are going.  I'm to keep a log of all incidents.  While I don't believe the problem is an AT&T issue, I figured I would cover all of my bases.

After my call to AT&T I installed IOS 5.0.1. To date, I have had no failed calls or "can you hear me now" issues. However, it's only been 4 days, so I will continue to test the phone.  I'm sure my friends will be glad when I stop starting a conversation with "can you hear me".

    I'll keep everyone posted.

Just adding to the thead for everyone with this problem. Had a Genius Bar appointment today because over the last month have been experiencing intermittent audio problems on both incoming and outgoing calls. Also sometimes it works with the built-in bluetooth in my new car and sometimes not. Bluetooth would dump the call and then couldn't get subsequent calls to connect. Apple handed me a new replacement no questions asked but made no guarantees that I wouldn't experience the same problems as the tech told me the problem is with *some* phones and no telling which phones those are. Have one year warranty to get it straight but sure do think with all the bells and whistles on this phone, simple phone calling shouldn't be an issue. Another problem I've experienced that the tech said would not be fixed with replacement is that after using bluetooth successfully in my car and then trying to use the Talk Text feature, it wouldn't work. It would activate my bluetooth and attempt to make a call. Tech said it thought I wanted to make a call and that's a problem/incompatibility with my bluetooth. <sigh> Anyway so far no problems with new phone but limited use and still the first day.  <fingers crossed>

I too have had it with constantly asking "Can you hear me?"

I have a feeling that this is a software issue as there seems to be no problem for incoming calls.
