Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Just called Apple about this no audio issue. After a couple of minutes wait and inquiry, they transferred me to Apple Canada. They asked me to reset the network. Of course, this doesn't resolve the problem. And they also asked me whether I have contacted my wireless carrier, and whether I have a case for the phone. But finally they made a genius bar appointment for me. I'll let u guys know the result when I come back from my appointment.

Just to throw my experience in. I called apple care, talked about the problem, mentioned this thread, they gave me a case ID, I made an appt that day at the apple store, walked in.. 20 minutes later a Geunius was swapping out my phone... so far so good... 10+ calls and not a single problem. I'll continue to to test.  I'll put myself in the"it's a hardware issue" camp.

i face the same "no audio" problem as the rest of you. so i called the apple tech-support today after reading this thread and now will get a new phone over the express exchange program. hopefully this one will work...

i took also the chance to buy an acpp, so i will definetely go on changing my phone, till it works...

cant't be to pay hundreds of dollars (or in my case euros^^) and get a phone, which isn't able to deal with the essential purpose of it's being...

    cross your fingers for me

I swapped my 16GB 4s yesterday at the Genius Bar. Although this is an unfortunate situation I cannot fault Apple on their willingness to make it right. I could easily imagine a scenario otherwise and really felt like they cared, an uncommon thing these days I find.

This morning I went to use Siri for the first time, no audio.......Siri was working and answered (actually the message was it didn't understand what I was saying) but only in text no audio. I went into Settings/General/Siri and Voice feedback was on 'Always' so should have had audio.

I rebooted the phone, the first reboot since I picked it up and it worked, real loud, full volume, also my 'schlick' sound for unlock and sleep was real loud as well, like full volume until I touched the volume control and then it went back to normal. I'm not sure if this is normal when using Siri through the speakerphone?

I asked the Genius what would happen if my original problem occured on the new phone, she said it was a known issue, though they didn't know what was causing it yet and it's covered under the 12 month warranty, I mention that as some here seem to think 30 days is it, it had me spooked, I guess that's for a full refund, this is my 3rd iphone, I started with the 2G, I don't want a refund I want the 4s to work.....

I tried this fix and so far it seems to have worked. There was one number in particular that no matter how many times I called, I could not get any ringtone or audio, altho the call went thru and the timer was counting. I could not hear the person on the other end and they could not hear me. After trying the headphone fix, I called the number again and it worked like a charm. I'll keep posting to let you know if the problem crops up again.

I think i'm having the same issue (at least the same as some of you).

The symptoms are that I can not get any out going audio (mic not working) when placing a call.

This normally happens after listening to some music with headphones and I want to place a call. When I dial the speaker button lights up and I can't hear anything on the headphones. I unplug the headphones and can then hear the call being placed, but when the other party picks up they can't hear me. I toggle between the speaker on/off but they still can't hear me.

I've had the phone about two weeks and this has happened 5-10 times. I'm not sure how it gets fixed, but the problem eventually goes away. I'm not sure a new phone is going to fix this as it seems to be a software problem...my phone is getting confused. I was hoping for a fix with iOS 5.0.1 but the problem reappeared today (I upgraded to 5.0.1 a few days ago).

Well, sorrry to say the headphone fix didn't last long... the third call I made after the so-called fix, came up without any audio. Made about ten calls since and four of the ten were without audio. Called Apple support and after a lengthy wait finally got a very aplogetic tech who said they could ship me a new phone via 24-48 hour express. Cost is $29, but the way I see it, it's worth it. Just hoping I don't get another dud.

I must say that I am not conclusively convinced that this is a hardware problem. I had the no voice issue for two days after my phone (iPhone 4s black 16GB, lock free operating on Vodafone in NEtherlands)!was delivered. I got in touch with Apple care who asked me to reset network, reload OS, then apply the 5.0.1 IOS patch. I also had a incident report logged with Apple and was considering getting a replacement (as offered by Apple care).

However, since then I have been travelling quite a bit and I could not replicate the voice issue in any of the roaming networks. I have tried all kinds of combinations and also with the car kit (Audi bluetooth), while playing music, using siri and doing mails/ browsing etc all in parallel. I also have a feeling using the headphone jack a number of times somehow helps sort out this problem. The vodafone network in Netherlands also has to do something with this problem. (the "outgoing call start without any feedback from the other side" issue is also happening on my spare Nokia so I am going to put that on the network provider).

In conclusion have decided to hold on to my current piece of hardware.

"I must say that I am not conclusively convinced that this is a hardware problem....."

    Me neither.

I had the problem, which, as reported further back in the thread, has now gone, following the update.

How can that happen if it's definately a hardware issue?

I was relieved to cancel to my GB slot, as I have a good screen (not yellow!) and now good battery too so didn't really want to change.

Anyway, good luck to all in getting it sorted.

I must revise my statement that the Audio Bug was solved with iOS Update 5.0.1!

For 4 days after updating to 5.0.1 the iPhone 4S worked without any problem.

Now the same behaviour as in the beginning usually if the iPhone is unused for a few hours in standby mode.

I start an outgoing call, the time counter starts to count and I can't hear the conversation participant as long as I click the speaker button twice.

I do not think it is a hardware bug, otherwise it would not work even four days without any problems.

I believe it's a software or device driver problem.

Apple, please: Deliver us from evil! ;-)

    Ser.No. starts with DNPG ...

    Regards from Austria!

    @DukeNukem,

I already know you from the Austrian A1 forums and I can feel your pain ..

I also thought it might me a software problem, and waited for 5.0.1 to be released. But it has not fixed the problem with me.

I tried to exchange with A1 for a new phone, but no chance... bad support!! I took my chance with apple care, and for €29,- I got a new phone delivered next day. I tested it without any backup restore first, was not able to reproduce the problem in 50 calls. Then I put back my complete backup to the new phone, and it is still working fine. All problems are gone!! I first also thought it might be a software problem, but now I'm 100% sure it's at least a combination of hardware & software, cause my new phone is working flawless.

I tested the problem mainly with calling my own mailbox. I noticed with the 'defective' unit that the first ring tone I heared was sometimes some kind of broken. This was when it was working. Now with the new phone it works every time, and the first ringtone is very clear.

I really would suggest you to contact apple care for an €29,- exchange, make a backup of your current device and once the new iphone arrives, restore the backup and test it carefully. You have no rist, cause you can still keep your old iphone, but I'm sure you will be as happy as I'm now with your new phone.

Just do not fight arround with A1, it's waste of time :-(

I have had the "no audio" problem as well. I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 and while it helped the battery life issue, my phone had the no audio problem twice the very next day. I went to ATT and they replaced the SIM card. That was inconclusive. While the problem abated for a couple days, it was clearly not fixed.  Went to the Apple Store. They said all that was left to "try" was a Restore.  So, they restored the phone, installed iOS5.0.1 on it again and sent me on my way. It failed about a block from the store. Turned around. They swapped my phone out for a new one. So far so good. But it has been less than a day. And what seemed to act as a trigger for my problem was getting in and out of a Bluetooth equipped vehicle. I would get in, phone would connect to the car's bluetooth system fine. However, after several in and out cycles in the course of my daily work the no audio problem would come back requiring me to power-down the phone and then power it back up to clear it.  I will likely know more if the new phone has fixed this issue after I have had the phone with me for a few normal work days.  Here's hoping!
