Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

    To all of you still struggling: just go and exchange malfunctioning device. I did, and everything works fine now. The problem has been there for over a month and no one was able to fix it with the software. Apple doesn't acknowledge the problem, so your hope for the software fix is ephemeral at best. But what's better, they're willing to just replace a device for you. So go and do it.

    SOLVED (for me at least) - For what it's worth, I've been having the same problem. I spoke with apple support and they had me "reset all settings" (not just network settings) and to my disbelief this seems to have solved the problem. Prior to the reset I was able to reproduce the issue anytime I wanted by simply dialing a number and IMMEDIATELY and putting the phone to my ear. It was as if the proximity sensor was detecting the "raise to speak" in order to invoke Siri and thus it disabled the speaker while enabling the microphone, though I have no proof of that, it seemed to fit the scenario. Also, note that if I wanted to avoid the issue happening I could dial the call and NOT raise the phone to my ear until I could here the ring back from the phone call, at that point the speaker worked fine.

    I'll report back here if the problem comes back.

    Well, so much for that.  After being able to call several times in a row without any issues... It just happened again.  I'm calling the Apple support folks back to see what they want to try next.  Something interesting to note, my wife hase the same phone and has never had this issue.

    I'll report back when I know more. Sorry for the false hope

    Vodafone in the UK and the same issues here, this needs to make it onto some major websites so apple own up and do something about it...

    Trying to get my phone exchanged ASAP.

    I called Apple back, they are sending a replacement device.  The senior advisor wasn't certain what the problem was but was certain that it had to be hardware related since the OS had been wiped, etc, etc... I hope it is fine on the new phone.  I will try to remember to post the results of the new phone.

    Hello,

    I think also to know you from at least two mobile-phone forums in Austria

    I am afraid you are right in your opinion that the best way to fix the problem is to exchange the "crazy" mobile with Apple. Could you tell me how to handle it? Shall I call the Apple Austria support line by phone under 0810***** or shall I contact the support via the AT homepage "http://www.apple.com/at/support/iphone/contact/"?

    What do you mean with Apple care, the iPhone care protection plan or the 90 days / 1 year support/warranty?

    Where do the € 29,- come from ????

    Querstions, questions, questions......

    It would be nice if you could give me a few tipps, I'm completely unexperienced in "Apple support affairs".

    If you prefer, you can also contact me via the Austrian UMTSl...... forum. I guess you know my nick there

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards

    Duke

    @DukeNukemAustria

    I'm from austria too and organized an exchange of my iphone yesterday, because T-Mobile Austria only offered me to send in my phone for analysis.

    you can call the ordinary apple shop phonenumber (it's a 0800 nummer, so it's free). there you get the option to be connected to the tech support too.

    if you explain the technician, that you've already resetted your iphone he will tell you, that the only possible solution is to repair the phone. just ask for an express exchange (€29 for each express service). the other possibility is to buy the apple care protection plan (€69). with the acpp the express exchange always is free of charge.

    i'll get my new iphone within the next 2 days and will keep you up to date, how's going

    hope, i could help @dukenukem...

    Swapped out my phone last night.  First call I made this morning failed with the sound!  This really *****.  I'm going to wait another day or 2 and see how it goes, but it looks like I'll be going back yet again!  Plus, on the new phone, now my battery is draining really fast.  That wasn't happening to my first phone!

    Love the phone, I just wish they'd acknowledge this problem and come up with a fix.

    @TheSmurf

    Thank's a lot for your detailed explanation!

    Now it's clear to me where the amount of € 29,- comes from.

    For the rest of the day my iP4s worked again without any error.... this device drives me really crazy.  It's working .... not working.... working....not working.....warm....cold....warm...  *arrghhhh*

    And YES! Your explanation helped me a lot!

    I really hope that your replacement unit will work fine.

    Please keep me (us) informed if your new one is free of the well known bugs.

    Update:

    Went to my genius bar appointment today, and got my replacement 4s white 32G from Apple store in Metrotown centre in Burnaby Canada. I was a bit panic before meeting the genius, but things went quite smooth. I had a happy conversation, and got the new phone from a black box half size of the original iphone box. The new one has seriel number starting with C38G......

    I made test calls during the last two hours, so far so good. I haven't taken off the original protection film, yes there is no hole for the speaker, but I just turned the volumn up a bit, there's no problem for me to hear clearly.

    I was told that this is a hardware issue. A sensor should determine whether your iphone is lying flat on your hand or you are holding it straight up beside your ear. But the communication between the sensor and the software fails. As a result, the phone does not know which speaker to use.

    I asked if they can give me some compensation for the protection film that I had on my original iphone, but the answer is no.

    Hope this problem doesn't occur in the future because I like the iPhone very much!

    Have been playing my iphone for the entire evening. The no audio issue does not seem to happen in the replaced one. However I just made a phone call to a friend for 30 minutes, guess what? Static and echo, yes, both of them during the call.

    I had the same issues.   I upgraded to the latest software the issue still existed but now I also had the case where they could not hear me.

    I also noticed that when I put the phone to my ear, Siri should activate, but it doesn't always work this way.

    Do any of you have this issue of while in the home screen putting the phone to the ear does not always activate Siri.    I think the problem is in the sensor...

    But I am exchangin my through Verizon, with a stupid restocking fee and getting a new unit.  I have spent so much time trying to fix this..  I BOUGHT AN APPLE WITH THE EXPECTATION OF IT JUST WORKING....  I am an engineer, I fix other people problems, I do not need to fix Apple's.

    @lei8023

    I too had a similar experience. So disappointing. My first phone had the no audio issue, second (express replacement) had a scratched screen, third (replacement from GB) had a small chip in the glass; returned for a refund and bought a new (fourth) one with static and echo. And, finally, returned that one for a refund. Now, I don't know what to do. Using my 6 year old phone, for now, which works great as a phone, but not much else. The first one seemed to be the only one with the no audio issue. Others just had a different unacceptable issue.
