Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Wow crimedog, sounds like you've really been having some bad luck.

I too had a similar experience. So disappointing. My first phone had the no audio issue, second (express replacement) had a scratched screen, third (replacement from GB) had a small chip in the glass; returned for a refund and bought a new (fourth) one with static and echo. And, finally, returned that one for a refund. Now, I don't know what to do. Using my 6 year old phone, for now, which works great as a phone, but not much else.

This seems to be a big issue with the 4S. I'd recomend sending or taking it in to a Genius Bar. I will have my 4S come this Friday and am waiting anxiously to test it for flaws. As much bad feedback as I have read, I still have a feeling I will really love the new addition to the iPhone family. Please do keep us updated on whether you find a fix or have to take it in, or get it replaced. Wish you luck.

Yes. If I didn't have bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck, at all. The genius didn't even acknowledge the echoing and static/buzzing on the last one, even after testing it for about 20 minutes. The echoing was horrible. I don't know how he could tell me that he didn't hear anything wrong. I told him that I've had every model iPhone and have never heard echoing, until that 4th 4s that I got. And, the funny thing is, that when he told me that there was nothing wrong with it and I said that I want to return it for a refund, then. He said "Well, it has 2 microphones, so you might get some echoing. But it will get better, because they will fix it with new software updates." Wait, I thought you just said that there was nothing wrong with the phone? IDIOT! I am now at a loss!

Wow yeah, sounds like that guy was just making things difficult. Don't you love when they try to tell you what you want to hear AFTERWORDS, in order to keep your business? HA!

I speculated it probably had something to do with the proximity sensor which effectively doesnt work on my phone. The problem is I'm on day 30 since I bought the 4s.. so not sure if AT&T will release me from the 2yr contract without penalty (eg loosing unlimited data).. and if they do what do I get as I sold my 3GS.

    @Rastah

AT&T let me return it without a restocking fee, keep unlimited data, and get the upgrade reversed. Hopefully, you will be able to do the same. But, you better go in today, because I think it's the last day. I believe it's 30 days from the day it shipped. In my case, I have an old phone that I am using in the meantime while I try to decide what to do. Good luck!

My observations (outgoing call no audio, iPhone 4s 16gb)

I bought the new Ihone 4s last friday. Initially it was iOS 5.00 and then 5.01. I use 3 different SIM of 3 different providers. 2 different countries - so the bug is not releted to the network.

I do not use bluetooth. Initially it was no applications installed, and now I bought or get at ApStore about 8 games and 2 office tools.

From the beggining the behaviour was completely the same: each FIRST call to NEW number (which I didn't call before, either stored in phonebook and dialed manually) - no incoming audio.

    I get audio back by:

    - calling this number second and further times.

    - at the first call switchung to speaker and back to tube

    - dial the first time and immidiatelly, before connection, drop the call

Calls was made on ground and mobiles, two different countries.

All other things works great, the qualitu and volume stable good. The longest call was 20 minutes, average 3.

Hope that Apple will make me happy by 100% soon!

Just wanted to throw my hat in the ring...

When I am paired with my Jawbone ERA headset I do not get any audio if I use voice dialing through the headset. If I dial from the phone I get audio, if I change sources from speaker and back to headset I can sometimes get the audio back.

I thought iOS 5.0.1 was suppoed to fix this. Any other fixes or experience with the Jawbone ERA headset?

I bought an iPhone yesterday at the Telus Store in Canada and am having the muted outgoing call issue. Incoming calls are fine. I have never used a bluetooth device with the phone and have even turned Bluetooth off. I'm going back to the store this afternoon for a replacement. Clearly there's something wrong with some iPhones. Hopefully it is something Apple can fix in the software...

You have mute on all outgoing calls or like my device - only on first dial of the new (never dialed before) number? If so, I would wait for fixes... Because it's obviously not a hardware malfunction...

All outgoing calls. Regardless, if they'll give me a new one, I am taking it. I don't want to wait around for Apple to have to issue a fix for what is the phone's most basic function.

got my replacement today. i've setted it up as a new iphone and just synched all of my contacts/apps/music again on the new iphone. till now i've made about 50 "test-calls" with different settings (with earphones, after using siri, during listening to music, plugged in and out the earphones a few times and so on).

so far, so good... until now there weren't any "muted calls" or other problems. hopefully it stays like this
